[Gateway] *NEW* Gateway Chief Mold

I haven't thrown wizards for a while now, but I do have a voodoo in the car and it is more like a wizard with the bead ground off (I did that once for fun). that blue chief looks like a judge. the judges I have aren't as stable as I would have liked.

Back when the big bead Aviar was "new" I knew a dude that threw them up and down a textured sidewalk until they were "beadless." It didn't work all that well.

neither did that wizard. I think it's in the garage somewhere. I'll post a pic if I can remember.

I doubt it will be as Overstable as a Zone.

Thinking more like a Suspect, since it looks quite similar.

This looks great. Maybe a even a little faster feel to it. My Evo Chief (RIP) was straight, but absolutely not OS. It was pretty much a point and shoot that you could trust. I liked it, but the new mold or tooling or whatever, has me more interested. Not that I need more putters.

this is the one I had which was wizard like but not really the same IMO.

That's in my box downstairs.

I have not had any time to make a video on these discs, but I will give it my honest opinion here..

Category: Putters, premium plastic
Product: Gateway Chief, evolution plastic

Additional thoughts/info:
Plastic is down right awesome. Very beautiful to look at it (sucker for swirls), and easy to grip and maintain.
New wing is very close to a DD Suspect, except these tops are FLAT. From talking to Danny, you can expect this with all their new chiefs.
Plastic has gumminess to it, don't expect a stiff putter, but also don't expect floppy. It's right in that sweet spot.
Noticeably more stable than the "old" chief mold. If you are more of a finesse person, or new to the game, the old Chief will suit you just fine. If you like to FH putters, or lay into them, you can expect a little turn on these discs with a slight hyzer-flip. If you force an anny and throw it hard, that's your problem, this isn't a Zone!

Overall Grade: B+
Overall Value: A- (should retail between $14-$17)
Closest Competitor, in style; DD Suspect, Discraft Ringer
Closest Competitor, in price range; Lucid Suspect ($14)

Reasoning;
This is an excellent disc from Gateway, which is pretty much known for their "other disc". Gateway has been pushing their test fly kits lately, which is an absolutely fantastic deal for TDs and Clubs! If you need a stable driving putter, check out the new e-chief, if you need a little more neutral of a flight, but like the flat top, check out the "old" chief. The price is very reasonable for evolution plastic, which is just as pretty and nice as anything else out there. The kind folks at Gateway will work to get you exactly what you are looking for as well.

So, in closing, if you like a beaded driving putter, with a nearly board flat top (its FLAT!!!), with a more shallow rim, check this thing out. Great disc. Great for upshots around 75-175 feet from my testing.

Bottom line = Will it kick out my beloved Fuzion Judge? The answer is no. My GBO Judge suits me perfectly, I love it. There are a lot of great driving putter options out there, you just need to find out one or two that suit your needs. Give the new chief an honest try, or beg your club/td to order a test fly kit with one included in it!

^ Great review!

I haven't tried Gateway's new putters, but it seems like a good move for the company. Gateway's flagship molds are all putt and approach discs. I'm completely sold on Magics and Wizards after keeping them in the bag for years now. The slim feel of the Chief and Shaman will definitely fit the needs for a variety of putting styles.

And here I digress: Several of their mids I've thrown have been great as well - namely (for me) the Scout, Karma, and Mystic. I do feel like Gateway should spend some more time designing better drivers instead of new putters. I've thrown a few Gateway drivers and haven't found any that I particularly like. Perhaps that will be the next move for Gateway. I absolutely love the company and the customer service so my only complaint would be the lack of quality fairways and distance drivers they produce...

Have you thrown an Apache?! They're probably the most underrated ctnrol driver on the market. The flight is crazy long for a disc of its speed.

I have not but our local pro shop has some demos. I'll ask to toss one next time I'm over there. Thanks for the heads up!

So, Chief with a thumbtrack == overstable. I have two, in great feeling plastics. I hope they get pdga approved soon. The Shaman with the thumbtrack is not as comfy in the hand. It could be flatter. Overall though, very solid. Best plastic blend in a putter though.

So I'm looking around and now there is a Chief and a Chief OS. Is the Chief OS the retool? Or is the Chief the retool and the Chief OS something else?

The Devilhawk is the groove top Chief, correct? Is it a groove top Chief or Groove top Chief OS?

Yes?

The new Chief is a squashed Wizard to make it a "low profile" throwing putter all the kids are throwing these days (why they can't just throw a normal Wizard is beyond me) and flies similar to the Colt, which is similar to a Classic Roc/XD

The Chief OS is a retool of the retool making the chief more OS

The Devil Hawk I think is just the Chief OS with a groove, even though the rim feels beefier. It's essentially the Gateway Rhyno.
