Location

Local Directions:

Ausable Chasm is conveniently located just off of I-87 between Exits 34 and 35. We are just 12 miles South of Plattsburgh, NY (the areas largest city - located on famous Lake Champlain) and just one mile North of historic Keeseville on Route 9.

From the North (Montreal/Plattsburgh):
There are several options for those traveling from the North. The quickest and easiest Route is to take I-87 South (from Montreal take I-15 South to I-87 South) to Exit 35. Take a left off of the exit on Route 442 East (also called Bear Swamp Road) and follow for a few miles to Route 9. Take a right on Route 9 (South) and follow to Ausable Chasm (approx. 3 miles).

A great option for those who may want a more scenic drive is to follow Route 9 South along Lake Champlain. This Route provides many scenic landscapes and picnic opportunities.

From the South (Lake George/Albany/NYC):
The shortest route from the South would be to take I-87 North to Exit 34. Take a right off of the Exit onto Route 9N North and follow through Keeseville for a few miles to Route 9. Head North on Route 9 for about one mile to Ausable Chasm.

For those with a little more time you may want to travel a very scenic route along Lake Champlain. This route, dubbed "Lakes to Locks Passage: The Great Northeast Journey," is loaded with scenic views, fabulous history, and numerous picnic areas. No matter where you start along this route you will find quaint little villages where the locals are eager to welcome you. The numerous shops along the way will provide you with unique gifts and the many eateries showcase a wide selection of area foods that will keep you going. Please visit the Lakes to Locks website for more detailed information.

From the East (Burlington, VT):
The most direct, most scenic, and easiest route is via the Lake Champlain Ferry that departs from Downtown Burlington, VT (King Street Dock) and land at Port Kent, NY (Just a few miles away). The crossing is about one hour across the widest section of Lake Champlain. The Green Mountains to the East and the Adirondack Mountains to the West provide stunning landscapes that are a photographers dream. Once you arrive at Port Kent just follow Route 373 (West) up the hill to Ausable Chasm. There is a special package available for those who will be taking the ferry round-trip. View our packages for more information.

From the West (Lake Placid/Watertown):
Ahhh...traveling through the Adirondacks! While the roads are winding and the routes are much less direct, the views are absolutely spectacular. Traveling amongst towering 4,000 foot mountains and along our many rivers, streams, and lakes makes this route a one-of-a-kind.

For those beyond the Saranac Lake Region take Route 3 East to there and then Route 86 East through Lake Placid and on to Jay, NY. In Jay, take a left onto Route 9N (North) and follow through AuSable Forks and Keeseville to Route 9 North. We are just one mile North of Keeseville on Route 9.
