A Standard Passable Small Park Niner

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 19, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

(1.566 Rating) A beginner friendly park style course.
- QUICK PLAY - It's usually not a good sign when I start a review off by noting how quick it is to play. Most baggers like me will spend less than 20 minutes throwing this one. It generally flows well and the navigation, which I'll touch on more below, is good enough.
- NAVIGATION AND SIGNAGE - I had no problems figuring this one out. My tee (1) was actually tee (8) as I parked by the wintertime locked restrooms. Transitions were generally short, the tee signage was good and the tee signage had next tee direction indicated on them. I highly doubt anyone is getting lost here, unless they have the direction sense of a headless chicken.
- BEGINNER FRIENDLY - The course set-up here will be great for new players. I could see first timers carding a couple pars and enjoying themselves. The layout is most ideal for MA4 level players with enough pizazz to also appease MA3s. There is high ace potential for veteran players.
- MAINTENANCE - This looks like a well maintained park. Very few overgrown areas along the line of play. As long as they keep mowing, this course should almost always be in good shape.

Cons:

Typical small park weaknesses.
- LACK OF CHALLENGE - As noted above, I thought the course will work well for MA4s and MA3s. For those above that level, it will be, check, played it, moving on. There is very little challenge here technically speaking. Holes (3) and (7) offer this element a little bit, but these holes are so short that they still won't be much fun unless metal gets pinged. A couple of the holes are also featureless throws.
- WALKING PATH - A walking path basically comes into play on every hole. On busy park days I could see lots of time spent waiting, but I doubt any holes will need to be skipped. Hole (7) will sort-of have a playground in play along the left for those that can't throw straight.
- LAYOUT FLOW - Hole (1) starts over 400 feet away from the parking area and (9) finishes a similar distance. I'm not sure why they did this. Tees (7), (8) and (9) are all better starting points than (1).
- AMENITIES AND EXTRAS - The equipment is below average. The baskets are Mach IIs and a couple are leaning and may have been hit by mowing equipment. The tees are natural without a defined throwing line. There are no benches, extra tees or alternate basket locations. There are shelters, restrooms and playgrounds however.
- HOLE VARIETY - The play variety is below average as well. Generally park style with one tunnel shot. No water in play and very little elevation change. Holes (1) and (9) are listed as par 4s on the tee signs, but I did not give credit for that as they are both about 400 feet long.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - I scored this aspect about 35 percentile. It's a nice well maintained small park and all, but it's not anything special compared to the typical park. No water features, rock elements or backdrop views to spark an enhanced interest.

Other Thoughts:

The course in Argos is a textbook example of small-town small park disc golf. It'll do its job of introducing the game to the locals and keep players interested up until they reach the MA3 level. The course is perfect for baggers traveling along US31 as well. One can literally pull off the exit and be back at the same point in under 30 minutes. No need for the destination course pilgrim to check this course out as it only grades out to a strong 1.5 rating to me. It reminds me of courses like Spassland near Milwaukee, Brent Johnson in Illinois, John C Poole near Nashville, Deuces Wild in Michigan, Lifepoint in Alabama and Thelma Stovall in Kentucky. I could easily name a dozen more as this is a very common type of course.

Don't hop the fence drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 9, 2022 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Great variety of shots not too much in the way traffic not too populated course wise. Very friendly locals.

DO NOT HOP THE FENCE ON HOLE FIVE THE MAN PAID 9 GRAND FOR IT JUST KNOCK ON THE DOOR AND HOPE HES HOME HES REALLY CHILL

Cons:

Not longer ,geese crap , I got my disc on the roof of the gazebo on hole 8 and was looking to see if the park workers were still there ( from when I pulled up) hoping for assistance instead of having to drag one of the tables and make a risky climb ( discovered and bought a retriever since then) they weren't there but they were pulling up and seen me walk up to the garage and called the cops on sight!!!! They were cool when they realized I just got my disc stuck they helped me get my disc but the cops just happened to pull up by the time I could throw another disc lol (they told them I was cool) but if ur a smoker be weary

Other Thoughts:

Just an awesome rad free course def worth playing through twice every time !!! Beginner friendly great practice course there is probably room for more holes which would be awesome but probably cause a fee if it got any better I'd imagine other than that I don't have the exp to say what could be done for improvement

Odysseus' Faithful Cur 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 5, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Small community park with typical walking paths/amenities. Bathrooms at the second parking lot, where you can park and hop right on the course at hole #7 or 8. A closer, more direct walk to hole #1 (tucked in the corner of the park) can be had by parking in the first lot instead, then then crossing the road.
- Reasonable holes although on the short side and interwoven with the other park activities, especially the walking path on #3 and the row of back yards on #'s 4 & 5.
- Hole #'s 2, 3, and 7 all throw towards or just into the small patch of woods on the course.
- Reasonable use of elevation; however, a large hill toward the front of the park seemed left unused?

Cons:

- Dangerous on the walking paths. Not totally blind, but, I eyed the hole, took a pic, and actually snapped a walker I hadn't seen as they turned the corner 100' dead straight ahead. Plays close to others' yards, the playground, and other amenities. Hole # 7 throws between swings and other parks of the playground area.
- #1's kinda tucked in a weird spot, and the course feels almost like it should be routed with #7 as the first hole, so as to have closer proximity to the main parking lot.
- Reasonable signage's mostly sufficient but occasionally leaves some guesswork...on #8 I threw to #1's basket, for example.

Other Thoughts:

- Not terrible, if the park doesn't see much foot traffic, but somehow I find that hard to believe. The lack of safety awareness in this design's a little bit shocking.
- Odysseus' decrepit hound, dies upon his exiled master's return: faithful Argos!

Austere Argos course is adequate 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 30, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Right off of Interstate 31 in north Indiana, the Argos Community Park offers swings, walking paths, a basketball court and picnicking shelters.

And oh yeah, a nine-hole disc golf course … all in the same area.

The first and last hole are the contrasting holes; they're long, fairly open and away from other park areas, though the walking path intersects the two fairways.

The area where the course is located is nice; it appears to be frequently mowed. The teepads are currently natural, but in good condition. On several holes, you could opt to tee off from the nearby walking path.

The navigation is fairly easy, and you shouldn't have to look far for the next hole. A 20-minute round is definitely doable if you don't encounter much human traffic, especially for experienced disc golfers who will reap their share of birdies.

The variety on this course is more than would be expected for a simple city park course. There's the two open holes, but there's also a 135-foot hole that utilizes an evergreen ceiling, a 170-foot hole that ducks just into the woods, and an up-the-hill approach to a basket tucked next to the woods.

Cons:

The course layout is numbered differently than expected, as Hole #8 is closest to the parking lot and pavilion. Since the basket for Hole #9 is near the teepad for Hole #1, you can get away with starting the course on Hole #8, instead of walking 500-plus-feet from the parking lot to the actual opener.

Hole #5 is a problem. At nearly 300 feet, the fairway is squeezed in between the walking path on the right and several fenced backyards on the left. I threw my drive way right and played for the par on this hole in order not to risk landing in someone's backyard or on a roof. I'm sure the neighbors are aware this hole exists and hopefully they haven't been struck by wayward throws. For safety purposes, this hole should be shortened and/or the basket should be moved to the right.

When I played, part of the base of the Hole #1 basket was broken, so the basket leaned a bit.

Other Thoughts:

The Argos Community Park course would likely be best played in the early morning before the park gets congested with users. My round was just after 8 a.m., and even then, I had to wait a minute on a couple holes to ensure that my discs and the walkers didn't become close friends.

According to a user on UDisc, they are working on adding concrete teepads and nine more holes. There is some wooded area west of the course, so maybe that space will be utilized.

Despite the natural teepads and proximity to other park facilities, the designers did a decent job of fitting a course into the area chosen, and the superb course maintenance is a welcomed touch.

Quick Little City Park Nine 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 31, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Argos Community Park has a 9 hole disc golf course a couple of minutes off of Rt. 31 . park your car next to the nice bathroom that they have . You will see a basket not far past it . That is basket 8 . There is a decent shelter on the left of the bathrooms . start on 9 to get to 1 so you don't have a good walk twice .
The Equipment : The tee pads are natural grass . The tee signs are okay and give enough information . and the baskets are Mach 2 showing hole number and .in okay shape . There are next tee signs at the baskets .
The Landscape : The course plays very flat . A very slight uphill putter throw on 2 and slight downhill throw on #8 . They do have some challenging rough and a small lake that come into play on your left at hole #1 . The course is in an L shape . At least it flows okay , once you figure out where it starts . Playgrounds , a gazebo , some backyards and a swing set all may come into play .
The Highlights : can't come up with one hole that really stood out to me . The park is nice and was mowed when I was here.
Time : It took me about 25 minutes or so to play here . Figure about an hour for a foursome .

Cons:

#1 Safety . This might pose as the most dangerous course that I have see in a long while . The course is in a nice multi use park . There are walkers , bike riders and people with dogs everywhere . The back of the course , Maybe 3,4,and 5 have houses with fenced in yards all the way down the fairway . Explain to Grandpa Hank why he was beaned on Father's Day . Coming back the other way 6 and 7 play right through a swing set and playground . A gazebo sits to the left of a fairway that dips into a section of woods/rough . Finally , throwing around the corner near the bathrooms is a nice shelter that I am sure gets some use . KABONG !!!! I bet you have to skip holes during busy times .
Disc Risk : Can be high , especially for the novice or families . On a slightly windy days , you can be throwing in yards , throwing in the water on #1 ( the water runs narrowly all the way down the fairway on your left ) The high grass and deep rough on 2 , 3 ( ? ) and 7 .
Challenge: even the novice should shoot around par here .Birdie or ace fest for the better players .
Course could use some better tees if they are going to keep it where it is .

Other Thoughts:

The course serves it's purpose , introducing the game of disc golf to the community . I am just curious that it will still be around in a year or 2 , after neighbors and park enthusiasts complain to the Argos Board to putt it or at least move it somewhere safer .This will be the one time that I tell you NOT to take advantage of a shelter on the grounds .
My Recommendation : Not the worst course for a newbie or family , but they better swing wide with fairway throws and play off peak hours ;. Okay for casuals , or the local high school . Good for leg stretches for the traveling weary going down Rt. 31 . which also means it is good for the Course Collector . Good players are going to avoid this course .
Only stop here if local unless early in the morning .

Basic but varied enough to be fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 12, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice tee signs that give directions to the next hole, if you remember to look before you walk to your shot. Mix of shot types and lengths. Hole 3 is a 150 ft hole through a row of trees that finishes to the right into a tight, secluded green and hole 9 was a wide open 390ft bomb.

Cons:

Grass only tee pads One hole goes right through the two parts of a playground. No elevation change or other utilized landforms.

Other Thoughts:

Not a destination course but it's a great chance to stretch the legs if you're driving through. It's about 90 seconds down the road if you turn off of 31.
