Going, going…

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 15, 2024 Played the course:once

Cons:

THIS COURSE IS CLOSING
Most of it is already gone — behind the construction barrier — and the remaining holes will be coming out soon. You can still play 6-9, but the understory is mostly poison ivy, at least in August.
The plan, per Lincoln Co P&R, is to add a back 9 at nearby Rescue Squad Park starting in 2025, and to give the front 9 some much needed love. The topography is great over there, playing across/along a couple of deep gullies, so hopefully it will be worth the loss of this cramped, multi-use-park niner.

Beatty Ford Park

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 6, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Beatty Ford Park is a beautiful, lakeside park with plenty of amenities, including: restrooms, water fountains, boat ramp, and a playground. The course features nine holes with DISCatcher baskets. It is a relatively flat course, with short distances, which makes it a great course for beginners. However there are actual shots to be shaped here, so even more experienced players will find that there is some fun to be had. The course is overall very beautiful, and rather relaxing.

Hole 5 plays to an elevated basket, located on a mound. This is a pretty cool shot, especially if played similar to an island hole. From where I parked, it made more sense to start on Hole 6 and finish on Hole 5, which made this a fun finishing hole.

Cons:

Beatty Ford Park utilizes natural tees, marked by numbered PVC caps, with no tee signs. This can make finding some of the tees a bit tricky. While navigation was mostly easy to follow, I was glad I had a map so I could find the next tee without walking in the wrong direction. The course could have benefited from having one slightly longer hole. As it stands, every hole is under 250 feet.

I was there in the middle of a weekday, and still had to wait on a few tees for people to walk along the fairway and out of my shot direction. A sign here and there warning park goers about potential flying discs would likely be a benefit, especially Hole 6 which has a semi blind shot.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, Beatty Ford Park is an excellent beginner / pitch-and-putt course that will bring smiles to many of the families that frequent the park. I am going to give a 2.0 rating. If I lived in the area and was playing a round of disc golf with the whole family, or was a beginner, this would easily be my go to location. For other players, this can be combined with the 9 hole course at Rescue Squad Park for a fun, but varied, 18 hole round. The course seems to have been kept in great condition, and the views of the lake from the course are very rewarding.

It's a short 9 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 10, 2019 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Technical
Easy on the legs (very flat)
Very nice park on the lake
Easy to navigate in spite of there being basically zero signage
Great place to take the family. Sling some plastic on a course with friendly distances and then enjoy the splash pad and playground area.

Cons:

Doesnt use the lake
Only 9 holes
No tee pads
Signs would be nice, but udisc covers that for most people
No place to let it rip

Other Thoughts:

It's a fun place to work on your upshots.
Offers a decent variety of shots (rhbh hyzer on 1, straight tunnel shot on 2, rhbh skip/ spike roller/ or gentle flex on 3, etc).
It's not as easy as it first appears thanks to the tight fairways.
It's definitely worth checking out if you are in the area.
It's much more enjoyable than its sister course around the corner at rescue squad park.

Nothing to write home about 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 17, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Elevated basket on one hole.

- 98' ace run hole.

- #2, #8 and #9 offer some fairly technical lines through the trees.

- Baskets are in good shape.

- Good view of the lake.

Cons:

- No teesigns, benches, next tee signs, or any indication of where you should tee off except for two small PVC caps in the ground.

- Very short and very easy, even for a small 9 hole course.

- Not much of a fairway on 3. You can throw an awkward 175' touch flex shot, or a RHFH roller, not much else.

- Some holes cross the walking path and you will need to check for people using the path before throwing.

Other Thoughts:

If you're in the area, check it out. Don't make a trip just to play it though.

The nearby Rescue Squad Park DGC is much more fun. I'd suggest going there instead if you're in the area. I'd rather throw it twice and skip this course to be honest.

The only reason the come here if you aren't already in the area for another reason is to pad your course count, go for an ace, or to play another 9 holes if you're traveling to Rescue Squad.

Fun Technical 9er 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 18, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is probably worth coming to play during the summer just for the breeze coming off the lake. But the holes are fun too. It's mostly wooded with short and very technical gaps to hit. You can tell the course was designed by a guy that loves Comets. Bring a neutral mid/putter and your favorite FH disc and you've got it covered.

This is a nice little park and the course takes no time to play. There are no trash cans but if you can't hold on to your trash by the end of this round here you're pathetic. The baskets are nice and you even get a cool raised basket on hole 5 for a fun ace run. If you have trouble carving tight lines through trees with your putters and mids this is the perfect place to hone that skill.

Cons:

Not obvious where it starts (cul-de-sac). Natural tees but for the most part they were dead flat. No tee signs but the holes are so short they aren't really needed either.

Not really anything in the way of doglegs just mostly straight holes. During non-winter it could be challenging to find your disc if you leave the fairway, this is a very green, leafy course.

Bit of a walk back to the parking lot but it takes you by the bathrooms (and trashcans) so not a real big deal.

Other Thoughts:

This is a dinky but pleasant course. The design is really solid and it only lacks length and amenities.

Fun pitch and putt/beginner course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 4, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is located in a small, quiet park located right on Lake Norman. The park has a small pavilion, bathrooms and drinking water fountains, an outdoor fire pit (cool!) and a neat water fountain play area for kids.

Fun, short midrange to putter distance holes with a nice variety.

The course circles around the parking lot and pavilion area and has a variety of narrow straight wooded shots, open shots, and a bit tougher shots through the woods requiring accuracy and shot placement.

The park and course was quiet, and clean, leading to a nice quick walk through the woods. Would be great for a lunch break 9 holes, or a beginner friendly instructional course.

Cons:

The tee's are natural, marked only with white PCV pipes in the ground, with numbers marked on them. Some of the tees have roots, or sand and could be a potential hazard.

No tee signs, and no directional signage. Although with some common sense, I was able to navigate the course successfully, I can see some people having a hard time.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, for a beginner friendly (but still challenging) short course, this is a great little course.

It is by no means a highly polished tournament caliber course, but the simplicity of the setup, and short distances make it great for teaching the basics to a new player, or working on your putter/midrange control.

Worth a look if you're in the area and need an excuse to get out of the house, or a fun way to work on your mid to short range game, but don't come expecting to use a driver.

3 disc rating for this course, based on it's target audience, not comparing to other great charlotte area courses

Cliff notes:
Fun, short, semi challenging course that would be great for beginners, or midrange practice.
No tee signs and natural tee pads make for a simplistic course.

Very Nice Techical Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 8, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Excellent beginner/Intermediate course. Variety of shot selection required to post a decent score, due to a rogue tree here and there. Technical shots at a premium, to set up short putts, otherwise, over par is in your future.

A wonderful course to demonstrate to a beginner the refined art of shot placement.

Cons:

Only one - there is no way the distance on hole 8 is now at posted 255. This looks like a typo. Perhaps 155, maybe?

Other Thoughts:

I loved the review on Cuthbertson Middle School provided by Charlotte area course designer Extraordinaire Stan McDaniel that I will be quoting it almost without fail, " I would like to [conclude my] review with the wish that beginner/school courses had different criteria for their ratings. Otherwise how can a short beginner course get a high review?

The course is EXACTLY what it advertises. A very nice beginner course with tight lines and good putting requirements in order to score well. This is definitely a course where an errant tree branch, or 5 ft off-line could mean the difference between a birdie and a bogey.

quick play 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 31, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a nice little 9 hole course that sits right on the edge of Lake Norman. It is in a very nice park that on a clear day has great views across the lake.

It has nice baskets and there is almost no trash on the course.

While there are no next tee signs on the course they are not really needed because the course flows really well and I never found myself wondering where to go next.

The design of the holes makes things interesting because while they are short you must throw accurate shots.

Cons:

Lack of trashcans, tee-signs, and benches(although you don't really need them)

The tee-pads are natural and are starting to rut out. While they are manageable now they could be a big problem in the future.

The course is kinda overgrown. While the lines are still pretty clean there is thick undergrowth very close to the baskets and fairways.

It is very short and fun for those of you wanting a challenge

Other Thoughts:

This course was very quick fun and pretty fun to play. It is by no means and championship course but it is a tight upshot course to practice putter and mid accuracy. If you are close by this one will take no time to play and is worth playing however unless you are a course played junky I would not go out of your way

Great Little Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 10, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I enjoyed this course. It has been over a year since I played, it but if I lived locally I'd play it often. A course is a course and it's partly open and partly wooded.

Cons:

Weren't many things that stood out about it, but nothing that was negative about it either.

Other Thoughts:

The holes aren't all easy-as-pie and the bit of difficulty factor is enough to make the course a very enjoyable place.

Short but technical 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 15, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

A decent variety of easy and challenging holes.
- Baskets - Being a fairly new course, the discatchers were all in excellent condition at the time of review. Most still have the plastic where the chains attach to the top of the basket.
- Tee Pads - "natural" = dirt. All are clearly marked with round ground markers along with the hole #.
- Tee Signs/Maps/Markers - No tee signs. There were no maps in the box at the first hole at the time I played the course. Each hole has ground markers as mentioned above.
- General Course Design - In general, the course was designed with great care to take advantage of the natural landscape. The fact that the fairways were left wooded brings a great technical aspect to this otherwise short course.
As mentioned in other reviews, the course is in a great area and the park is very clean and well-kept. The scenery is fantastic and so far there is no graffiti to speak of, which is a nice change.

Cons:

No real deal-breaker cons to speak of. But there are a few things that some might find irritating:
- Several of the tee pads do not allow adequate space for any real footwork, not that it is needed for most holes but I found myself very aware of the lack of space to throw as I have come to expect from other area courses.
- No trash cans: I picked up a fair amount of trash the day I played -- 6 cans and 4 energy bar wrappers. I am not sure who these guys are that felt they needed 4 energy bars after the 175 ft third hole but I would like to meet them -- I thought I was in bad shape.

Other Thoughts:

Again, a very nice park with great family amenities, although I do not agree with some of the other reviews that say the course is family friendly -- aside from holes 1 and maybe 8. The fairways are pretty tight for most of the other 8 holes, and I do not think a family would appreciate their technical aspect.
I appreciated the raised basket on hole 5 after the narrow tee shot over the pathway. Definitely a nice touch.
If I lived closer I would probably play this course as much as any other 9 holer in the area but I will probably not drive the 45 minutes it took to get there...UNLESS it goes to 18 holes as it has been rumored. I would be very interested to see what they could do in the space that they haven't done already.

Scenic 9 hole 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 26, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Great Amenities, clean restrooms, water fountains, and a huge covered outdoor area.
- Great course to bring your kids, safe area, with a water/splash park area.
- Attractive park
- Despite being a short 9 hole, the course still offers a variety of shots.
- Easy to navigate

Cons:

- Natural teepads
- No trashcans or benches throughout course
- No teesigns
- No distance shots

Other Thoughts:

It seems that all 9 hole courses are the same, but this one breaks away from the pack a little. It shares the characteristics of being a short beginner friendly course, but the wooded holes here make it a little more technical than the others. Enjoyable course in a nice park, certainly worth playing if your coming through town, a local, or just looking for a great park to play some disc golf with the kids.

Lakeside 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 18, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Fun, challenging 9-hole course. For such a short course - 5 holes under 200 ft, none longer than 255 - you really need to throw some great shots to score well.
- Good variety of holes - several open, doglegs, one throwing to a raised basket, and tight fairways. Other than lack of elevation, the course has a little bit of everything.
- The course will appeal to all skill levels. Advanced players will enjoy the real challenge of trying to get their birdies. Lack of distance means beginning players will not be overwhelmed.
- Great scenery. It really feels like you're deep in the woods on several holes, only to turn around and realize you're a couple hundred feet from the lake. What an amazing view.
- Park has nice, new amenities - restrooms, water fountains, playground and splash area for the kids, and boat access ramps.

Cons:

Dirt tee pads. Not a problem on most holes because they're so short. The only real issue is the tee for #2 is on uneven ground. There wasn't a spot within 5 feet of the tee marker that was flat enough to do a real run-up throw.
- You probably don't need a map when playing, but at least take a glance at one online beforehand. The park has 2 parking lots (the second is a public boat access ramp), and there aren't any big signs marking the first tee. So, if you're not paying attention, you may find yourself wandering around looking for the first tee.
- #8 runs along side the road. It's not a heavily travelled road, but still have to pay attention when throwing. If the hole was any longer, requiring drivers to be used, or if the road had more traffic, I'd be more concerned about safety.

Other Thoughts:

Most 9-hole course all feel the same. This one definitely stood out. I give it credit for making holes challenging, yet still appealing to everyone.
- As mentioned, the course isn't long, so you can play only carrying a couple mid-range discs.
- Favorite hole was #6. 240 foot dog leg right through a tight, wooded fairway. It takes a precise shot to A., not hit the trees along the fairway, and B. put yourself in birdie position.
- This is a fun, change of pace layout from other nearby courses. Scenic, quite park makes for a relaxing round.

Cons:

it was a little muddy, and windy the day i played. could use some clean up inthe form of cut and dead branches laying on the ground.

Other Thoughts:

Fun, Fun, Fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 3, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The holes are short and interesting, a fun course to play through several times. We would have played a few more rounds, but ran out of time.

Fairways here, while mostly tight, some ridiculously so, are well defined.

The park is in a nice setting, with a nice playground and a boat landing, pretty scenery, right on the lake at a boat landing.

The course is easy to navigate. There are well defined paths to the next hole.

Cons:

The tees are natural, and marked with small round white numbered markers, really not much of a con here as most of the holes don't require a run-up.

There is no signage, but there is a small sign with a box for course maps near the first tee. Again not really much of a con, because the holes are short, all of the baskets can be seen from the tee, and the course is easy to navigate.

The longest hole is 255 feet.

There are only 9 holes.

The nearest store is about two miles away.

Benches and trash cans are not to be found on the course, but not to sound redundant it's not a big deal.

Other Thoughts:

This is a fun course, take a putter and a mid and have fun. If you're passing through, I highly recommend it. It's almost as good as I can imagine a 9 hole pitch and putt course being. I will stop and play this course every chance I get. i would give it a higher rating if it were 18 holes. This course will be the standard by which I judge short pitch and putt type courses.
