Pros:
Belgrade Lake Disc Golf is a private enterprise located on Mercer Road in Rome, Maine. The enthusiastic owners have been working hard to improve the disc golf here. They've recently added a longer, more challenging second course called Coyote Ridge and a 7 hole mini basket course is up and functional with plans to expand that to 18 holes also. Both of these new courses should be added as separate courses to The DGCR website.
They have a clubhouse type building with discs, tee shirts, hats, drinks and other goodies for sale. The cost is $5 for all day. Jfarm15 mentioned the incentive deal where you get to take a shot at elevated basket from probably 35'. Making it will win you two free passes!
I was short of time the day I played so I chose to play the original course, Fox Run. It features slate/granite tee signs, decent sized concrete pads and Discatchers with the yellow bands.
The terrain is wooded with just enough elevation to make the holes interesting. There are quite a few short Ace runs of around 145-200 feet. On the pole holding the tee signs is a place for people to record their Aces. For example, # 14, which is a simple little 150' downhill which just a little hyser at the end has 17 recorded Aces.
While I always enjoy the short Aces runs, my favorite holes on this course we're the final three. # 16 is only 264' but it's a blind throw over the crest of a hill. # 17 was the prettiest hole on the course at 284'. You're teeing off from a small hill, throwing downhill and then the basket is just starting up the other side of the valley. And # 18's basket is tucked into the woods which requires you to land your drive onto a small road about 240-250' away. It's a fun, challenging throw.
Cons:
With all the short Ace runs, the course really plays at a recreational level. But it's a fun, challenging rec course.
Hole # 2 was very boggy off to the left side.
Other Thoughts:
# 13 is 378', slightly downhill, fairly tight and a little hyser is needed. I don't know about mr. Jfarm 15 but this old man uncorks his driver for all I'm worth on that hole. I think the average rec player gets to use his driver a half dozen times and still loves all the 150' Ace runs. And you won't find my name on any of the Ace honors lists!
I believe this course will continue to see improvements over time. I'd love to live near it.........in the summertime! No Maine winters for me.
