Unique Rings 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 24, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

+Unique rings that are homemade. Definitely not as good as a basket but better than a tone pole or something similar. They are the only thing that will provide any real challenge on this short course. It would be really cool to nail an ace on one of these ring baskets. More challenging than a normal basket for sure as they are smaller.
+The course is set in a very nice state park on the shores of Black Hawk Lake. The state park and next door Lake View very much center around the lake. It is a cool hangout/atmosphere in the summer months.
+Easy to find your way around the course. It is short enough and flows well.

Cons:

-The rings have to be listed under both pros and cons. Some will think they are cool and some will want Mach X instead.
-Tee boxes are rough. The are framed out with wood in a small design. Thankfully you won't need a big run-up on any of these holes but still. Nothing would be better than what is there.
-Course is overall very short with less than 200ft per hole. Good for beginners but not challenging for anybody else.
-This is one of those courses where you see the cool landscape and lots of trees and know that there could be a great course here. They would have to commit more land to the project and some more $$$ but this is a cool piece of property.
-The course does an ok job of staying away from other forms of recreation but overall does have some conflict with a park road, playground, fish cleaning area, and just people walking around the park in general. When I played, the campground looked at full capacity and there were kids on bikes everywhere including the disc golf course.
-No elevation to speak of.
-Tees are marked but not much info beyond hole #. Would be nice to have distance and more info for each hole.

Other Thoughts:

-Overall, this course is kind of crammed in to a small part of this very nice state park. It is unique and everybody should try it once for the novelty of the baskets. Otherwise, it's just an ok course. I probably won't play here again unless I decide to go camping at the state park.

Rings! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 14, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Short / Flat Course
-Fun Quick Round
-Decent Map at Start
-Rings are kind of fun (See pics)
-Generous Pars

Cons:

-Plays over a road (#4, #7)
-Fish Cleaning Station comes into play (#7)
-Small Playground comes into play (#9)
-No benches / trash cans
-No individual tee signage

Other Thoughts:

The Black Hawk Lake State Park DGC plays next to the campground area of the state park just outside of Lake View, IA. An Eagle Scout project from 2010, targets are rings instead of baskets. Completing the hole is going through the ring in either direction. No elevation, a few trees and a couple of left turns describe the course. While it is mostly set apart from other activities, the fish cleaning station (#7), road (#4, #7) and a small playground could come into play. The tee boxes are boxed off with 4x4 lumber, but still grass inside. Tee signage, maybe some mulch in the tee boxes would increase the rating here. This is a course I stumbled into finding, but I had fun throwing through the rings. I would play it again if I were in the area.
