Reviewed: Played on:Dec 24, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is the perfect course to introduce a new player or play by Purple level players. Green level players will have lots of fun on this course.

Cons:

This course is not for any players of Red or above skill level,

Other Thoughts:

Google directions should put you in the parking lot by basket 9.

Learn Well At Brielle 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 22, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

+ There is an information board by hole one with a big course map, a lost disc box (a nice surprise considering how little rough there is!) and a plastic container for score cards (empty during my visit). Many 18-hole courses could learn something from Brielle.
+ A quick play. One solo round takes an experienced player about thirty minutes, give or take.
+ The sturdy baskets themselves are numbered along with small square flatstones at their bases.
+ Short distances, flat terrain and minimal obstacles make this a good course for beginners.
+ The course plays within wide open fields with a peppering of trees in this small peaceful community park. But...

Cons:

- ...the course is surrounded by sports fields on one side and private residences on the other. A particularly bad throw or supremely unlucky gust of wind risks your disc landing in someone's yard presuming there isn't a soccer or baseball game to prevent you from playing in the first place.
- There is no signage of any kind. Current tee and next tee signs are all missing. The only way a player knows where the next hole starts is by finding the numbered flatstones implanted within the ground, which don't catch the eye to begin with.
- Short distances, flat terrain and minimal obstacles make this a lackluster course for seasoned players.
- A walking path crosses one of the fairways, and a residential road runs alongside one of the holes. Take an extra second to look around first.

Other Thoughts:

My favorite hole at Brielle is hole five because it has the most trees to contend with. My least favorite hole is hole two because of its close proximity to a road all along its right hand side.

The course as a whole is unquestionably geared to fresh entrants to the game. Brielle is consistent and doesn't overwhelm the new player with unreasonable distances or dense trees. It starts out somewhat lengthy (The absolute longest hole on offer is 235 feet.) and then tightens up once trees enter the equation in order to keep roughly the same level of difficulty. New players will get a friendly introduction to the sport here once they can figure out where the holes begin.

To that point, I'd like to take a minute to talk about those flat stones at the start of each hole and beneath each basket. Perhaps proper tee signs were not installed because of aesthetic choices or safety reasons. That's fine. But if that's the case, then I feel like an opportunity was missed with those stones beneath the baskets. We already know what basket we are throwing towards because the baskets themselves are numbered. So, why not spray paint the next hole's number on it with an arrow pointing towards the next hole's rock? I think that would be a better use of this course's features. It would be a creative 'next hole' sign, too.

Outside of that, I wasn't crazy about throwing towards or alongside people's backyards for a few of the holes, but I don't think players are going to go buck wild at this course anyway. From the get-go, players can understand that this course isn't meant to be approached at 100%. It serves its purpose just fine as a training ground and a warm-up area.

So in closing, I am glad that the course at Brielle Park exists. It sensibly uses the real estate it was given and doesn't try anything fancy or silly. Navigating it will be tricky for first-time players, but it is just the right course to bring new players into the fold and show them what park-style disc golf can be. Come to Brielle for a refresher course on the basics and pick up some birdies.

Neighborhood Gem 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 4, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Mostly really short, but the first two holes are 210' and 235'
- Very nice neighborhood park, and the course flow intersects with the park traffic at only one or two spots (which is a real design accomplishment considering the lack of space)
- Nice welcome board, with course map, lost disc box, scorecards, rules, and credit to Forrest Smyth's scout project
- Although there are no teepads, their locations are clearly marked with in-ground stones. The same type of stones are also placed at the base of each basket. I guess that's a way to confirm you're throwing at the right one!

Cons:

- The first tee is a ways from the parking lot - look for the big sign on the other side of the baseball diamond. The course finishes at the parking lot
- The course is short and there isn't much variety, But with that acknowledged, there are a bunch of different ways to enjoy it (see below)

Other Thoughts:

Ways to enjoy Brielle Pak DSC:
- Practice your upshots. As much as I like field work and throwing at markers, there's nothing better than throwing at actual baskets. Brielle gives you a range of different lengths for practicing your upshots
- Work on your RHFH. Much of the layout is counter-clockwise around a park (like Harry Dunham), so some of the holes are shaped well for practicing forehand, with distances from the low 100's to the low 200's
- Fun ace and birdie runs
- Playing with your kids. This is perfect place to bring your kids if they're interested (or if you'd like them to be interested) in playing. And if they melt down, they can play in the park while you finish the round!
- Introducing newbies to the game of disc golf. You can really put a putter in someone's hand and play here. It provides the feel of a "real" course without any hazards
- 20 minutes of disc golf. What could be better than having your putter in the car and stopping off for 20 minutes of throwing and keeping score?

I really enjoy seeing scout projects in parks like this, because it helps grow awareness of the game, and it's genuine value-add to the community. Good on you, BSA Troop 63 and Brielle Parks and Recreation!

Nice Labor of Love

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 26, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Recently installed 9 hole course in a nice local town park with beach volleyball, softball and other activities on the premises. Adequate parking. A small information kiosk with map, game rules and scorecard box welcomes players at hole 1. New Mach V baskets. Adequate 1'x1' numbered pavers which mark each tee off area. Pretty good flow, and good use of available land.

Cons:

VERY short, with most holes in 125-175 foot range. Would like to see a true tee pad and tee sign, however basic, at some point for each hole. Some tee pads are a bit close to previous basket, though limited course traffic should not make this an issue. A couple holes border the backyards of neighboring houses- be careful.

Other Thoughts:

Only a couple months old, Brielle Park DGC represents the latest 9 hole addition to the NJ disc golf scene in the form of an Eagle Scout project. Kudos to the young man who took the initiative in getting this project approved and the course in the ground!

Brielle Park is a perfect place for a family to play and an ideal "first course" for true novice players learning basic disc golf skills before tackling the challenge of a tougher venue. Hole distances are short, and there are no real obstacles here which would discourage a player being introduced to the sport. For veteran players, the lure would not be to play a competitive round, but to work on your approach game or bag Aces.

I do think to maximize the playing experience, the aforementioned tee pads and signs would make great additions to the course. Located less than 10 minutes from Manasquan and Pt. Pleasant Beach and a nice little spot to play.
