1st time - mixed opinion 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 7, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

VERY well kept course
Nice tee boxes
easy to navigate
awesome elevation changes (especially 17 ;) )
great distance on some holes

Cons:

Easy course, even on "pro".. playing par-3 I managed to finish 5-under par and i am NOT that good :)

Some construction right now, but looks to be some awesome new tee-box locations

Other Thoughts:

I really enjoyed this course - it was nice having a big elevation change and groomed fairways.

I wish there was a bit more 'skill' shot opportunities, as i was able to make it to the pin in 2 or less shots on every hole, even the huge cliff shot.

Great course, just not that difficult!

Best of the best 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 7, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Season pass was the Best $30 I ever spent. This course is what discin should be. Tests every shot, some fade right, some fade left. Some uphill, some WAY down hill. Some open, some tight. Beautiful scenry, huge tee pads, benches every hole, garbages every hole, restroom right at hole 1 which is also right by hole 14. Scorecards at the first tee. Really nice recycled plastic signage. You can tell the designer wanted to test every shot. So many signature holes, #7 green is just incredible. I only throw 350 so reaching the tiers on #7 is going to be a goal I must acheive before the season is over.

Usually there is alot of really good looking women out playing most the time. Great date course!

Cons:

Other than being crowded on nice days I really can't think of one.

Other Thoughts:

Hang your pass on your bag so it is easy to see for the Park police. They walk right up to you and ask to see it. They often hang out often at the bottom of the stairs on #17. I heard its over $200 fine for not having a daily or season pass. Very worth it IMO.

Bryant Lake 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 27, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is very nice. You get a map and scorecard with your payment, but don't need it much since all the teeboxes are clearly marked with a hole map and distances. Nice long concrete teeboxes and pins with a 30 ft circle of wood chips around each hole make everything very easy to navigate and a pleasure to play. You almost feel like you're playing ball golf with the manicured fairways, the the low rough, and finally the deep rough.

Personally, I don't throw super far (250ish), but I felt like I had a shot on every hole and I played the regular tees. If you were a beginner playing the shorts I'm sure you would feel the same way.

Finally the layout and views when you come up to each hole are very cool. It culminates in hole number 17 which is one of the best signature holes I've seen for a course.

Cons:

The only cons for me were on a few pins it wasn't clear where the next teebox was, but since they provide a map navigation was still very simple. Also, it looked like a couple of holes had alternate pins installed (#1, 6, 17) and it wasn't always clearly marked which pin you were playing. If you scouted ahead though one pin was marked with the hole number and the other was not.

Other Thoughts:

I've played 40 courses to this point of my career and it's currently my favorite. When you're done the beach and the lake are even close for a nice swim. If you live in the cities or plan to visit then this course should be at or near the top of your list.

Made me fall in love with disc golf 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 23, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is not only top of the line when it comes to variety, scenery and excellent hole design, it also provides the player with a coherent experience that has gotten better and better as the course has improved. I've played there dozens of times and am still learning about the course, but I always leave feeling satisfied, which is not true of a course like Acorn park and Kaposia (although both are excellent).

Although surrounded by the bustling western metro, you get a rough prairie feeling. Lots of wind, dry nettles and grass, wild roses and towering cotton woods. I've seen several eagles hovering above Tee 7 looking out on to the lake.

Although I would agree that 17 is my favorite, the course has many signature holes such as 5, 7, 10, 15, 16, 17.

Cons:

Don't park in the n00b lot below 17 if you don't want dents in your car. There are a lot of policy around, but they are nice most of the time and don't bug casual players.

Other Thoughts:

Early evening play is spectacularly gorgeous.

Most "Fun Factor" of any course i've played 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 29, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Overall beauty in many ways; views of the lake, rolling hills, many trees, ponds.
-Greens made of wood chips. Not only added to the visual appeal of the course but also helped find holes that were hidden around corners or behind trees.
-Although there were too many people on the course they were all friendly and the group of older gentlemen ahead of us let us play through.
-Dual tees and pins on almost every hole.
-Great variation from hole to hole in distance, scenery, landscaping, elevation, amount and type of obstacles.
-Baskets and park are overall very well maintained.
-Not too many chances to lose a disc. Most holes are somewhat wooded but have been walked through enough to make it easy to find them.
-Hole 17 is crazy! 443 feet over a road and parking lot with the hole situated on the opposite hill. This is the way to finish a round!
-The landscaping is beautiful. It also helps mark were the next tee is. Navigation was never a problem.
-Adequate parking even for the large crowds.
-Huge tees, the biggest I have seen and all in great shape!
-Mowed, distinct fairways.
-Signs to navigate from hole to hole.
-Detailed, full color map/scorecard available before hole 1.
-Bathrooms at start and in middle.
-Bag hooks on most if not every hole

Cons:

-Very crowded. Get there early to avoid the rush
-This course really isn't that long or hard. When I first played this course it was quite hard but when I played it this summer it didn't have the same challenge.
-Pay to play. It's only 5 dollars and was worth it for sure. This isn't a con to me but may be to others. This allows for continuous improvements to the course. You can also invest in a 3 Rivers Park Pass so you can play at Elm Creek and Hyland. I think that is $30 annually.

Other Thoughts:

-I've played the best of the best in MN and some high rated courses out of the state. This course has the best fun factor of any I've ever played. What I mean by that is that I was never annoyed by how hard or easy a hole was. They all were different and challenging enough to keep it fun. The holes are all well landscaped and I was always excited to see what the next hole looked like. Overall, one of the best courses out there!

Must play if you are in the Twin Cities!! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 11, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

1. Very scenic
2. Need hyzers, anhyzers forehands and many more shots.
3. Good for beginners trhough advanced players (relatively short, but tricky holes)

Cons:

1. Could be too short for advanced players. Rarely, if ever does a driver need to be thrown more than once.

Other Thoughts:

Some people think negatively about pay to play. In order to promote disc golf and build up the sport, the individuals playing it need to invest in it. "The free sport" thinking will have to be in the past to take disc golf to the next level. This is a great pay to play course and I recommend going if you are in the Twin Cities Area.

The Best I've Played... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 1, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

1) Very scenic
2) Very well maintained
3) People who play there are normally "classy" and follow the rules

Cons:

1) Pay to play (but it's worth it)
2) Not beginner friendly
3) Can be very buggy at times

Other Thoughts:

I have been playing disc golf for three years, and this is by far the best course I've ever played (of about 20 or so). This course requires an arsenal of shot types and control. Hole #17 makes this course well worth it if nothing else. Enjoy!

UPDATE: I now think this course the prettiest, but too short and way too many deuces. Not the most fun.

Gorgeous deuce chase course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 29, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

*One of the prettiest courses out there. Rolling hills with gorgeous vistas. Mowed, manicured fairways. Top-of-the-line landscaping
*Some really fun shots. 17, with its 100' drop. Several down-hill hyzers. One hole where a sweeping 'S' curve is the best play available.
*Pay-to-play. Funny. This course has some of the least litter/vandalism as any course in the metro. PAY TO PLAY IS AWESOME FOR THE SPORT.
*Plenty of opportunity to make a string of deuces.

Cons:

*This course is so fun, marking a con doesn't seem right, but I suppose the lack of distance is one knock. Lots of putters and midrange discs off the tee.
*The Park Police can be nosy, but they're just doing their job.
*Can get very crowded, but the pace of play generally flows pretty well.

Other Thoughts:

Last year, the course closed at the arbitrary time of "Sundown." It didn't really mean "Dark" either. The park police were over-diligent. This year, however, the course closes at 10, so it's less of an issue. Swimming in the lake on a nice beach is fun after a hot round. Play here. Support Three Rivers Parks and they will support disc golf.

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 18, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

There are a ton of pros. First off, the upkeep on this course is absolutely amazing. Clearly they put a lot of work into making sure the greens are nice and the fairways are mowed. There is also a scorecard on the first tee as well and bathrooms located in the same area.
There is a huge amount of variation of holes. A lot of the greens are very fast, and some are tiered. There are some good short holes with a handful of obstacles as well as some long bombers with few obstacles.
A lot of the holes are very memorable, particularily 17 as others have said. There are some holes that really make you think about the consequences of messing up, with huge slopes on the sides that you may or may not be able to retrieve your discs from.
The baskets are in excellent shape, and I like all the erosion control that is being put into use.
I think most of the holes have signs now, and I know that the scorecard has distances for each hole.

Cons:

The course is a little on the short side. Other than that.... it's pay to play and far away from my house.

Other Thoughts:

if you live in the area, for sure try to play here. It's only 3 dollars for a day, and deffinatly worth it.

-Wide variety of shots

-Mulch pits surrounding the baskets add a nice touch
-Granite steps add a touch of class
-Hole 17 is incredible

Cons:

-PAY TO PLAY
-Steep hills adjacent to several holes can make it hard/impossible to retrieve overthrown or poorly thrown discs

Other Thoughts:

One of the best courses Minnesota has to offer, if you don't play this course you're dumb, end of story. The $3 (or $30 for the season) is perfectly reasonable for the high quality of play this course offers.

P.S.
Don't park in the far lot unless you're willing to risk a broken window/windshield

Pros:

Just about everything about this course is awesome. A variety of challenging and easier holes, some in the woods and some easily visible.

Being that it's a pay to play it's definitely the best maintained course I have played on with good paths and stairs from hole to hole. It's easy to navigate from one to the next, and they even have scorecards with maps to make it even easier.

Varying terrain and elevation that also makes for a gorgeous view of Bryant Lake. The last hole is my personal favorite, as you have to throw down hill off a huge cliff.

Cons:

Obviously it's not free, but you'll get your money out of it anyway.

There's a few tees near the woods where I could see someone loosing a disc, but nothing too bad if you ask me.

Perhaps the best course in the area? 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 15, 2008 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Great course in pretty much every way. First it is located in a beautiful park with nice views, a lake and many other extras.

Second, the design is great every shot in your arsenal will be needed to score low on this course.

There are uphill anhyzer shot shots, downhill hyzer shots, spots for rollers, spots for thumbers and everything between.

Standout holes are #16 and #17. #16 is a tight hole with a deep gorge off to the right and trees to the left with a giant rock at the top. If you pass that test you walk over to #17 where you will be chucking from over 100ft above the hole.

Good parking and a reasonable price.
Traffic isn't bad on the course considering the quality.

Cons:

Not many things to complain about, the only real issue may be the lack of signs/maps. I admit they may have been added after I last played. The other issue is that this course would be extremely difficult for new players. I know this was not really designed with new players in mind but my advice is for newbies to avoid this one until you have more rounds under your belt.

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 18, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

To shoot a good game you will need every shot available with the possible exception of a roller. This sounds stupid but the vast majority of courses do not require you to use forehand, backhard, hyzers, anhyzers as well as drive with putters and midranges to shoot a solidly under par round. Many holes would be signature holes on average courses. This parks commitment to disc golf is evident even before you arrive at hole one.

Almost every hole has some sort of landscaping that directs you to the next hole as well as signage. Teepads are near perfect and baskets are in excellent shape. Pretty much is the posterchild for what a pay per play course can be. I am a disc minimalist, usually carrying only 3 molds, and this is the course that made me finally give in and carry a few more. It exposed several weaknesses in my game which is what I like in a course.

Hole 5 is my nemesis on this course. It is a seemingly easy downhill shot with a late dogleg right. I don't know if it is the wind or the deceptive distance but I always underthrow it. Hole 17 is very fun if you have a big arm. A long downhill to a fairly open fairway, it will expose your buddies weenie arm. This isn't a woods course but it uses trees and terrain to shape the fairway frequently. There are holes here for every type of player. I'd say this is a course best suited for an Advanced Intermediate.

Parking is very good and this is a multiple use park, so make a day of it and go swimming between rounds if you are from out of town.

Cons:

All holes on this course are fun but some are pretty basic when in certain pin positions. 2 holes have baskets pretty near the bench for the next hole. Yeah, I am picking nits. Hole 15 is being redone and some erosion work is also being done in that area. There is really nothing here that will prevent it from becoming a 5 star once the work is done.

Other Thoughts:

If you live in the Twin Cities area a year pass is a no brainer. There is a bathroom about 2/3 of the way through the course. Bring water.

Try to park in the lot very near the entry gate. It is close to hole 1 and hole 18 and also safe from all but the most errant throw imaginable.

Bryant Lake another must play 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 14, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Kinda biased since it was my very first course design, but if what you are looking for is a simply really fun round, Bryant is it. Some long, some short and technical, a few forehands and more. The landscaping is proof in the pudding that PAY TO PLAY IS THE WAY. The $30 season pass is way too cheap, especially in 2009 when Elm Creek opens and the pass is good for all three. (Elm Creek may battle Bryant for most fun). On the hot days, take a dip in the clean lake down the hill.

Cons:

Very crowded. Play early. Exit the park at Sunset, the rangers will ticket you.

Other Thoughts:

Bryant is a very special course for alot reasons. Enjoy.

Another "Must-Play" in Minnesota 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 3, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Like a fine wine, this course keeps getting better with age. For being a relatively "flat" state this MN course has some very well laid-out holes featuring considerable elevation changes allowing you to launch bombs on several holes and work on your precision (threading the needle). There are plenty of trees and natural shrubbery to present challenges making several shots "high risk, high reward"... I love that I can use just about any type of shot in my bag while playing here. The signage, tee pads and overall upkeep of this course are amongst the best I've ever seen. Hole # 17 is my favorite disc golf hole EVER! With the massive elevation change (for a MN course) I have had several near aces on it and aspire to one day soon achieve an ace on this hole. Remember to throw down towards the hole. (Suggestion on #17) Aim a few inches above the railroad tie that holds the retaining wall in place and throw downward. If you throw up or even level with the tee box, you will more than likely have your disc turn over to an undesired location.

Cons:

Be careful not to park underneath hole #17, I've seen several discs hit cars over the years of playing here. Other than that, I have ZERO bad things to say about this course.

Other Thoughts:

Being a pay to play course doesn't mean you can dump your trash and cigarette butts anywhere you wish... Pick up after yourselves for God's sake. Keep this place pristine as there are not many courses even close to this nice.
