If I Could Turn Back Time 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 30, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

(2.206 Rating) A scenic and historic stroll through an abandoned town.
- FUN FACTOR - This is an easy going recreational course with some charm to it on a few holes. Birdies will get tallied up by skilled players, but it's somewhat challenging enough to not become a bore-fest. I think the ideal audience is 850 to 875 rated players, but it should be enjoyed by locals well outside that range. Low chance to lose a disc and overgrown fringe areas were not oppressive when I showed up. I'm not sure what kind of local scene is here in this low populated and hard to reach area, but I could tell by the natural tees and paths between holes, that a small local scene must have developed in 2019. I'd have no quarrels about playing here if I lived in town.
- RAW BEAUTY - Good. Mostly moderately wooded with a couple heavily wooded lines. I scored the course roughly 65 percentile among all courses I've played as of this review.
- CHAINS - Nice newer Prodigy baskets that caught well. They are hard to spot a few times due to the color.
- QUICK PLAY - It can be quick to play if you can actually park by the course start. It took me 45 minutes solo, although I am a very quick player.
- GROW THE SPORT - The next closest course is almost an hour away. Anyone in the nearby area who's pondered about trying out the sport now finally has an opportunity. Not an Ideal beginner's course, but the course is not oppressive enough to scare away most first timers.

Cons:

Young course issues. This course not much more than baskets, tee signs and natural tees.
- LACK OF CHALLENGE - I personally would have liked a touch more difficulty. For a moderately wooded course, the basket guarding is weak. The sub 250 foot hole distances will allow for a lot birdie chances. Myself as an Intermediate, I think I would average 5 or 6 down. Advanced players will emerge victorious in a birdie blood bath.
- TEE AREA - As of my visit in late fall 2019, the tees are natural grass with-out leveling. Three 4 x 4s were laid above ground to form the pad area. No benches or places to stow a bag. Tee shading is good however, being at around 75 percent.
- NAVIGATION - Passable. No course map on site. The Tee signs have the next tee direction indicated and it's the only navigational aid. I strolled to the wrong tee twice. I wish that the scorecards at the community board had a map on them.
- PAY TO PLAY - There are two honor boxes here. One to get into the park, which is going to be $3 for players 12 and older. Second, there's an additional collection box at the disc golf community board requesting $2 per player. That's a little steep for what this course currently offers.
- LOCATION - So remote that the old town closed up shop and moved elsewhere.
- MULTI USE HAZARDS - I could see issues for players if the park is busy with park walkers or people exploring the abandoned town. A trail comes into play several times.
- BUGGY - This course has the look and feel of a buggy course. I'd pack 40% deet if attempting to play here in the summer.
- PARKING - From November threw February the park access road is closed after 3PM. That means a mile long walk to hole (1).

Other Thoughts:

I wonder how this course is going to evolve. I could easily see a scenario where the interest wanes and upkeep stops. The course slowly degrades to 1.5 then 1.0 and then perhaps meets the same fate as the old town. On the flipside, if money is invested and there's a few caretakers, I could see this course start establishing a good vibe with tidied up lines, benches, alt tees, alt baskets, concrete tees and more. This trajectory would easily take the course to a 2.5 rating to perhaps a 3.0 level course. I guess time will tell, but it would be presumptuous of me to call this an average course as is.
- UNIQUENESS - Average hole variety. All par 3s. 15 to 25 feet of elevation change on 5 or 6 holes. Mostly moderately wooded with a couple of heavily wooded and open lines. Hole distances are Recreational level ranging from sub 200 to around 350.
