Play the pop-up, bring a permanent track to Morrisville 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 8, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

It seems we are living in the golden era of Triangle-area pop-up courses. It's fantastic. These are the recent pop-ups in the Triangle:

Forest Hill Jaunting - Durham
Dix Park West - Raleigh
Dix Park East - Raleigh
Forest Ridge Park - Wake Forest

This doesn't even include the annual tournament courses that come around (DUO, WakeMed Soccer Park, and others). I don't see how anyone could get bored with all of the permanent and temp options in the area. It's fantastic.

Now, on to Cedar Fork District Park...

+ First course in Morrisville! Get out and play the course and show the town how much interest there is in disc golf. While I was playing the course, several bikers and walkers asked me about the course and disc golf in general. What a terrific way to build buzz around the sport and options to play locally.

+ Easy navigation, from the first tee near the main parking lot -- tees marked on the ground with white and blue paint -- to next tee signs (which are especially handy for the middle holes, which are across a small walking bridge in another section of the park). The UDisc maps are accurate also.

+ There's nothing much to this course for Intermediate and up players, but there are some wide open spaces to rip drives and watch the full flight of the disc. There's even a par 4 hole. Decent distance for a 9-hole and temp course.

+ New baskets.

+ Pretty, well-maintained park with other amenities such as ball fields, covered picnic areas, and a paved greenway trail.

+ Baskstop nets (like for baseball) have been placed behind two of the baskets to protect against going long (into a parking lot on one and into nasty underbrush on the other). That was smart thinking by the designers.

+ Very nice to have two sets of tee areas, a White/Intermediate and a Blue/Advanced. The Blue isn't much longer than the White, but it's something and does add some distance and challenge to the course.

Cons:

Not a whole lot to this course, but it does what it's designed to do: spark interest in the sport and get new players hooked. That said, here's what to expect here:

- There's no elevation on the property and every hole is wide open. A couple of holes are pinched in close to some trees (one low ceiling hole -- hole 8), but that's it. Everything is completely obstacle free. I'd almost consider this a practice area, as you can really tee off wherever you like (within reason and without endangering other park goers). I would go into a more detailed description of each hole, but they literally are all wide open. The only variable is the distance -- and there is some variety there, which is nice. Some trees and underbrush are *theoretically* in play, but only with really shanked grip-locks or early-releases.

What you see is what you get. It's not super high on the fun meter (except that it's disc golf, so it's more fun that most everything else you could be doing) or much of a challenge. But at least it's another option...and it's a great option for new players.

Other Thoughts:

Play it while you can in the month of August. Hopefully it will come back seasonally...or spark interest in the town to put in a permanent course.
