Basic Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 12, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

A well-cared for, short, open course.

-Amenities: DISCatchers, partially numbered. Concrete tees are smaller but not problematic. Tee signs have hole, number, and par, and they make navigation seamless.

-"Friendly": Easy-to-play and hard to lose discs.

-Beginner-Friendly: With distance ranging from 120' to 300' and almost no fairway obstacles, this would be a great place for someone to learn basic disc-slinging.

-Minimal Variety: There are a couple of factors adding slight interest. (1) is a sharp dogleg left, (5) is a sharp dogleg right, and (7) has an early tree that will punish a late release. (2) plays up a hill that (3) plays down, and (9) introduces an OB road on the right.

Cons:

Not much to hold interest.

-Length: Many players will throw putters off the tee for most holes. Very little challenge.

-Whacky holes: The two exceptions to the "straight shot through the field" rule are (1) and (5), but these doglegs are improbably sharp. Despite both being sub-225', I threw drivers because the left-right distance change was so extreme. I can't imagine a beginner parking either of these.

-Limited Availability: As with any school course, not open during a vast swath of time.

-Grate: Hole (4) features a drainage grate inside circle 2 with holes large enough to swallow a short shot.

Other Thoughts:

Coker Elementary is an open, short course. Considering the signage and target quality, I suppose it's Passable. Nothing more than an intro or practice course.

Top Tier Elementary School Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 20, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

(1.474 Rating) An openish school course perfect for children.
- BASICS - There are three things that are absolutely required to make a disc golf course and they are baskets, tees and a layout to follow. Just baskets is a practice area, just tees is object golf and just a layout is a trail. Coker got the basics right by buying DISCatchers, installing concrete tees and putting up numbered tee signs with distances.
- BEGINNER FRIENDLY - What you'd expect from an elementary course. Seven of the nine holes are less than 205 feet and every hole has an open angle towards the basket. Overall a very forgiving landscape.
- NAVIGATION - A breeze to navigate due to the openness, logical flow, tee signage and numbered baskets. In addition, the course map link on DGCR provided by Cerealman is spot on.
- QUICK PLAY - Baggers could potentially cross this one out in twenty minutes.
- ACEABILITY - A skilled player throwing here would probably smash chains every twenty rounds or so. I scored myself an ace driving into the parking lot. No luck this time however.
- MAINTENANCE - Well kept of grounds on my appearance.

Cons:

A lack of complexity
- LACK OF CHALLENGE -The difficulty was set up right for the intended audience. That said, the audience is school kids, thus those at the recreational level and above with be underwhelmed by the challenges presented.
- UNIQUENESS - The layout is mostly obstacle free. Hole (1) twists left and hole (5) twists right. To skilled players, the other 7 holes are straight ace runs.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - Towering Fort Mountain can be seen in the backdrop on many holes. Other than this element, the attractiveness is rather meh. The space to build this layout is mostly flat and open. Trees come into play on less than half the holes. A fence is in play on hole (3) and a school access road comes into play three times.
- CHARACTER - Solid basics, but there are no other extras or amenities.
- PARKING - There is no defined parking near tee (1).
- TRASH - I spotted lots of trash along the tree line.

Other Thoughts:

A perfect numbers padding course for baggers. Easy to follow and quick to play. Other than those that live within a couple miles, school children and baggers, there is no reason to come here. I am glad however that the kids that go here have a respectable course to learn the game on.
