Practice area, but with Serving Suggestions

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 28, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

It's really very cool that the Cowan Lake Park district added a set of three Mach X baskets near the campground to introduce folks to the sport, and that Pete & Matt gave them some serving suggestions (three tees per basket) to suggest some angles and lines of play. If you want to introduce a youngster or new player, this is a great idea. They won't lose a disc, and they may quickly develop the skills to have this become the putt putt, 'par two' fun warm up spot that it is for those who have played a little while.

Great signage and plenty of parking adjoin a 'course' with mostly open shots ranging from 76' to 144' in distance. You will find that hole 6 has a tree forcing a left to right line, that hole 7 has a tight and technical gap to hit, and that hole 9 forces a controlled, left to right shot to avoid the rough on the right.

Cons:

The 'course' flow is odd, in that, if you want to play the holes in numerical order, you'll be walking out to the tee on six of the 'holes'. We played it in this order, to minimize walking: 3,1,2,6,5,4,7,8,9. I might have suggested designing a set of three varied tees per basket, using the woods, all rotating the loop of three baskets counterclockwise instead.

The 'course' kind of needs some markers in the ground to specify the intended teeing area, rather than just having folks throw from somewhere near the signs. The shots may be a little better 'forced' if the beginner could see that, for instance, you are supposed to throw from the right of the sign, and behind it.

One other con for me is the proximity of the little cabin wall (and glass window) adjacent to the 7/8/9 basket. Otherwise, the course has pretty much no elevation, and is obviously TINY.

Other Thoughts:

Again, this is an 'introductory', practice type 'course' that serves a simple purpose. When in season, and they're checking at the gate, very few will find it worth an admission fee. But suppose you're camping here, and you came to play a tournament at the 'real' course on the other side of the lake, or are visiting the Q-Knoll course nearby: you might throw a few of these holes as warmup or for fun with the gang.
