Coyote Trace 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 18, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

1) There is decent variation around the course. It is mostly open and, despite quite a few holes getting pretty samey feeling, there are some woods around that are used well to keep the layout as interesting as possible. It's rather untechnical, even on the most wooded holes, but you will still be using a mix of putters, mids, and drivers on the tee shots around the course, which is always a plus. My personal favorites were hole 2 (fun, tight tee shot and a basket on a hill), hole 3 (pretty simple hole, but with a blind basket off the tee), hole 6 (short par 4 with a completely blind landing zone that brings good risk reward into play), and hole 8 (simple par 3 with a tee shot under some pines and a small gap to hit at circles edge).

2) The tee signs are great. They contain the standard info (decently accurate distances, hole illustrations, and par) with the addition of next tee arrows to aid with navigation and a detailed account of elevation changes, which I always love to see.

3) Tee pads are concrete and are in good shape. By no means large, but plenty big enough.

4) The baskets are DISCatchers, are in good shape, and perform as expected.

5) Benches are available on some tee pads, but there are a little bit sparse.

Cons:

1) The most obvious con you can see the second you pull into the parking lot is that it looks/feels generally uncared for. The main parking lot (as well as others around the park and a random concrete pad on 5) are just falling apart. Seemingly not maintained for years. The grass in the fairways was mowed and the course itself was in fine shape, but the rest of the park definitely looks like it could use some love.

2) Not as obvious when you pull in, but will be shortly after, is the next con. Bugs. I've never complained about mosquitoes, gnats, or any other bugs in a review before since they are just to be expected a most courses, but they were almost completely unbearable here. It was only mid-May, and no amount of bug spray would deter them. Running down the fairway to outpace them flying after me was my only respite during my round, and that only lasted a minute or two at most before I was swarmed again. Based on UDisc reviews and current condition updates the bugs are just as bad or worse during the rest of year.

3) Navigation can be a little tricky if you are playing close attention. The course puts in a good effort to help you find your way but there are some unintuitive and/or long walks between holes. I wasn't paying close attention and walked down the path to the right of 1's basket and found my self on 4s tee before turning around and realizing you have to walk along the road to get to 2. 6 is across the road from 5, behind the tree line. After 6, accidently skipping 7 and 8 is definitely a possibility. Then the walk from 14 to 15 is down a narrow path, over a bridge, around a corner, through path intersection (turn right) and around another corner before you can see the next tee. Then 17 is around the tree line and back across the road.

4) The flip side of the design section from the pros, is the samey-ness of the open holes. With the exception of the different distances 5, 9, 11, 12, 17, and 18 are just the same hole; wide open, hyzer if you have the power for it. 10 was a little bit or a tricky turnover for me as a lefty, but it's just another wide open hyzer for a righty. Hole 13 is wide open, but there is a small pond that can come in play with a bad shot. 14 is quite open until right near the basket. It's definitely the trickiest of the open holes, but there is a good 100-125 feet behind the basket that tucks into the woods where I think the basket should have gone to make a good am level par 4. Then 15 has a single, large conifer tree just short of the basket that will eat anything near it, but you shouldn't be going near it without a bad shot. That's 9, arguably 10, holes on the course that are pretty much just the same shot, especially for RHBH/LHFH players.

5) Additionally, on the open holes the fairways aren't cut super wide and tall grass is a significant lost disc hazard. Even by mid-May when I played the grass was pretty near 2 feet tall, so during the summer some long pants to keep your legs from getting cut up by weeds and some very keen eyes are probably going to be a necessity here.

6) When I played there seemed to be significant drainage issues in some parts of the course. There was some rain the day/night before I played but nearly none for the previous 2 weeks or so. But, there were portions of holes 1, 2, and 3 that had significant amounts of standing water. The pond in front of and ditch behind 13s basket were also flooding a bit. Now, as a traveling player I gave this a pass when coming up with a rating since I don't know if this is a regular issue or if I just caught the course at a bad time.

Other Thoughts:

Initially after playing this course, it left a bad taste in my mouth, but after thinking about it for a while I think it was a bit of an overreaction as I played it in weather that was a little bit crummy. I still don't think it's anywhere near special, but it's not bad. I'm pretty stuck between a 2.0 and a 2.5. Average or slightly below both describe the course well. One of my biggest gripes about the course (the bugs) can't really be considered a con because that's not any fault of the course. And despite the navigation being a bit tricky in some spots the course tries to help you out as much as it can along the way. So, I'm going to just sneak this course into the 2.5 category, but only just. If I ever learn that the drainage/standing water issues I experienced a common occurrence a downgrade to a 2.0 is certainly happening. Even something as small as the tee signs not being as good as they are would probably be enough to kick the rating down for me.

Overall, a quite average, if not slightly below, course. Nothing to travel for unless you are just bagging courses. If I'm driving through the area again I don't see myself playing the course again, trying out another course in the area instead.

Coyote Trace , Howling Success 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 25, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Coyote Trace DGC , In Johnson County Park , sits about 25 miles south of Indianapolis and not far off of I-65 . There is a campsite across the road .There is no defined parking lot at the start of the course . You just park on the cement closest to hole #1 . I did not see a bathroom during my round here . The campsite on the left of hole #1 might offer one . This is an 18 hole course .
The Equipment : There is a kiosk here , but with no course map on it . A practice basket sits pretty close to the start of the course . The signage is very good , with Hole#, par , distance and flight path . The pads are cement and plenty big enough . The baskets are Yellow banded Discatchers .
The Landscape . Johnson County Park was mowed and the course looks well taken care of . The course plays fairly flat . A few grades are slight here . There is an elevated tee shot on #2 to a basket sitting on the backside of a semi large man made hill . The course plays park style . The main obstacles on this course are some trees here and there . There is a pond in play on hole #13 . Some high overgrowth defines the sides of the fairways from about 6 -13 , and some tighter holes with growth on 15 & 16 . .
The Highlights . This course has some okay holes . #4 is a tight fairway throw , 415' , to the basket sitting far off to the right . #6 , 560' , is a tight right to left throw to a more open fairway . The basket is over a creek straight ahead on a narrowing fairway to a short green . Cross a bridge to get to the green . #12 is a long descending fairway with a large bush or tree trying to keep your drives left . Heavy overgrowth is off the fairway on both sides . #14 is a 400' hole with a large tree guarding the fairway 2/3 of the way down . The basket is wedged in a small area . #13 is a short throw ( 240 ' ) over an embankment , then a pond .
Signature Hole : #2 , 315' from an elevated tee and a tree canopy , the basket sits on the upper side what looks to be a man made hill .
Time : It took me a slightly over an hour to play the course , but partly because I was lost in a couple of spots . A group of 4 knowing where they are going will take 2 hours .
I don't know how much play this course gets , as I saw no one here on a Saturday at 12 . You may have this course to yourself , and there should be no one on the course but disc golfers .

Cons:

#1 Navigation . Print the map . This course has no Next Tee signs and the course cus up in spots . Going from 5-6 , you have to enter the tree/brushline from a small path to your left of the #5 basket On the transition from 14-15 , there is a path you walk down to your right , I think after you cross a bridge . It is not marked and cost me needlessly walking around .
#2 Disc Risk : The rough after hole 5 can be plenty punishing . > Also losing a disc in the rough on blind shot #6 seems easy , too . Use a spotter if you can .
#3 Amenities . When you pull up to where you think the course is ,( A Sign on Schoolhouse Rd tells you of the Course ) , you will quickly see there are no extras . Bad parking lot , no benches or bathrooms , no trash cans ( carry out what you carry in ) , no shelters . You come back around to your car on hole #4 , then you disappear for the rest of the course .

Other Thoughts:

This course hasn't been reviewed enough to be over or underrated . I scored it at just over a 3 but had to round down . The course is solid . At 6100' it has some distance , and it also has some clever pin placements . Course Designers Adam Cornelius and Neal Harvey should be commended for making a course with some variety . I think there was some challenge out here , and there was also some Fun Factor . Johnson County , you are moving the right way on this course . Add a couple of Next Tee signs .
My Recommendation : Good course for campers across the way , newbies with guidance from more experienced players , locals , intermediates can be challenged here . Ams might like this and pros will pick their spots here . I feel this is a good place for the traveler , since it is about 14 minutes off of I-65 , and an easy pick-up for the Course Collector . This course is worth it . If in the area . Play It !!

Nice mostly open course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 11, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

There are a few tight fairways but mostly it's an open course with long throws. The first part of the course is nicely shaded and the trees are space out so plenty of room to throw. The middle section is wide open and the rough here is short enough that it's easy to find errant throws.
Concrete tees are in place on all holes.

Cons:

couple holes have thick rough with poison ivy and thorns.

Other Thoughts:

We really enjoyed playing this course

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 23, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Good layout, challenging but fair.
-Good use of land for being almost completely flat
-Brand new DISCatchers
-Consistently mowed
-Some open, some tree lined holes
-Camping nearby

Cons:

-Grass tee pads (for now)
-Signs have not been installed yet but are on the way. Make sure you have a map. The course flows well but there are a couple of
-Some areas still need clearing/pruning. Make sure you have a spotter on blind holes.
-Bugs were a bit of an issue, but not terrible. Bring spray.

Other Thoughts:

For only being open a few days, this course is extremely playable. It is located on the former site of Whispering Pines Golf Course in Johnson County park. The park was able to obtain a grant to purchase equipment and install this course. They have a lot of resources at their disposal to maintain the course and make it an awesome place to play.

EDIT: CONTINUALLY IMPROVING, UPDATED TO A 3.
