Excellent Farm Disc Golf 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 25, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ Setting up the round with Matt was super easy. He's quick to respond to email and was very flexible on when we would like to come and visit his farm. He's an incredibly friendly guy and a great guide to play a round with. Many thanks for letting us come visit and playing with us!

+ Fantastic variety. Playing on his farm is a very unique atmosphere. How often do you get to play a par-4 165 foot hole that has a mando through a barn window with an OB involving cows while chickens just walk in the fairway? While there are some gimmick holes, there is some very real and challenging disc golf once you get into the woods behind his farm. Matt is very cognizant of course design and ensured that the course has a balance of short/long, left/right, etc while being challenging, but very fair. The elevated baskets make some holes even trickier than they would have been with regular baskets. And, as every great course has, there is an island hole. In this case, true to the essence of the course, it's made of manure.

+ I think with a few more baskets (rather than bale feeders and multiple holes playing on the same basket) and some more rubber mats, this could absolutely become a destination course (even more so than it is now) and a great place for a tournament (a downside would be that some holes, such as #10/12, 1/22, play on the same basket). I think Matt has some great ideas for future development to make the course even more fun and attractive. The OB and mandatories make the course better.

+ As it is a private course, your group and Matt will be the only ones playing there.

+ Plenty of room for expansion.

+ I loved having the cows mooing (cheering) me on.

Cons:

- As the course is still relatively new and private, the course equipment is a little miss-matched. You'll be teeing off from rubber mats, dirt, gravel, and even his back porch (for #1). You'll be throwing at various brands and homemade baskets, a Prodigy Strikezone basket (I think that's the brand), and trying to land in circular bale feeders (for 3 or 4 holes). This may be viewed as a con, but I think it adds to the personality and variety of the course. That said, there are no tee signs, there is no course map (yet) as the course is still evolving. It's the opposite of a manicured golf course and that is very endearing to me. I think you have to have a certain type of openness to truly appreciate this course. Fortunately, many disc golfers, by their very nature, have this.

- Cow pies in the fairways. Just saying.

- Unfortunately, this course is unavailable in summer as the grass gets too tall. Even playing in very early spring, we almost lost a few discs to the grass.

Other Thoughts:

Having never meet Matt before, it's pretty easy for me to be objective when reviewing his course. It is definitely at least a 4.0 rated course. My brother and I debated whether this may actually be a 4.5, but it needs just a little bit of work to get up there.

Suggestion for those visiting the farm: Hit up Redbird DGC just 2-3 (4-5 minute drive) miles south as a warm-up beforehand. It's a quick 9er to get your juices going before you hit Curiousfarmer DGC!

Again, major, major kudos to Matt for designing and installing this course and opening it up to the public. We had a great time and can't wait to see what improvements he made next time we come!

My friends farm course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 17, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Private course on a farm of a good friend of mine so I will try to be totally honest. Matt is a great guy and player and guide for his course. Great variety of holes requiring a wide array of shots. A couple of what I call gimmick holes where you shoot thru a barn window. I like gimmick holes and raised baskets, which there are a few. Nice variety of uphill, downhill, flat, trees, buildings, roads, etc. 22 holes offer many different distances, 4 par 4's. I did get an eagle 2 on one shooting thru the barn window and then throwing in throwing over the out of bounds hog lot. Many fair out of bounds on the course, fences mainly, chance of losing a disc on this course is non factor in my opinion. I enjoy playing this course, hoping to play many more times and wonder what the curious farmer will do for improvements. Fun course to play doubles on.

Cons:

Private course can only play by setting up with Matt and usually not available on Saturday. Tee pads are natural or rubber, but it is a farm course. Quite a few cow pies to avoid but I grew up on a dairy farm.

Other Thoughts:

Give Matt a call, he'll be happy to play a round with you.

My Private Farm Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 12, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

On my farm and I designed so take my bias into account, but I used the natural features of my farm and took a very creative approach and ended up with a very fun, yet challenging course. I'm an intermediate masters player who throws 300 ft. Almost every hole is either a challenge to 2 or a challenge to 3. You'll have ace opportunities, and you will most likely take a 5 or more with all the Mando and out of bounds. Under par is a good score for most of us. Some elevated baskets. Basically, if you can control your discs, you will score well. If you can't, your big arm will only get you in trouble.

Cons:

Natural tees can be slippery. Baskets are mix and match and none as good as what we are used to. But they catch. Bring a towel, as you may end up throwing your disc in the shit, literally!

Other Thoughts:

If you are a big throwing purist who likes to play disc golf on a ball golf course, or if you're not the patient, self-forgiving sort, then drive the other way, because there are a lot of bogey traps on this course.
But if you are a fun-loving, adventurous type, get a hold of me and give Curiousfarmer DGC a try!
