Beautiful Park 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 23, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The lake and bridges at Decatur County Park make a wonderful backdrop for a good nine hole disc golf course scaled for recreational players to enjoy a few challenges, a little variety, and the chance of a gut check shot getting near the water. Starting out counter-clockwise with long and short tees poured 5'x10' in level concrete aiming at decent discatcher baskets, the hole distances range from 122' to 264' from the shorts and 181' to 386' from the longs. The fun thing is, that after throwing the ace run shortie on hole 4, and heading back down the path and across the bridge to hole five, you realize it's a self-contained island that constitutes the fairway of the longest hole on the course. Keep it in the middle!

There is a slight tendency to favor left to right lines out here, and they used obstacles (on hole 3), and a wee bit of elevation (hole 3) and the long tee on 8, where they could. The course has solid amenities and signage. Overall, you'll not have a competition level round here, but a pretty, and approachable play.

Cons:

There were a few places where players will need to use wisdom and coexist, like when you throw around, over or through the tree wall up the hill to hole three, be advised that a graveled 'pad' with picnic tables lies just 20' past the basket. On hole 5 (long), do not throw if the shelter is in use (a shanked drive there would not be a pretty sight). And it seemed that, in season, the geese lay claim to hole 6 (goose crap all over the tee, the fairway, and they congregate by the basket).

The chance of the intended audience (casual to rec) losing a disc in the water is actually kind of high, as is the chance of a rhbh hyzer on hole 1 heading out over the road. There isn't a whole lot of nasty rough in play, however. The course was limited to a smallish space, so no big holes (if you're looking for that sort of thing).

It would be nice to have a 'next tee' sign after 4 and 5, for first timers. (Go left, down the path, and across the bridge to the 5th tee, and across the blue bridge to your right for the 6th).

Other Thoughts:

Since there wasn't one on here, I sketched a very basic course flow diagram that may not be perfectly accurate, but should help you get around (I don't often go to UDisc, since DGCR is a more useful site for me).

Fun 9 Holer off 74 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 25, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Decatur County Park is a brand new course off the I-74 corridor between Indianapolis and Cincinnati . Parking is severely limited . Maybe 10 vehicles safely . No bathrooms on the course . possible bathroom near the playground after #4 .
The Equipment : There are 2 4 X 8' freshly poured cement tees per hole . There are no signs yet , but it is said that they are on the way . There is a putting basket close to the parking lot . All of the baskets on this 9 hole course are new white banded Discatchers .
The Landscape : The course was mowed and well taken care of when I was there . It is a very clean course . Elevation-wise , this course tends to stay pretty flat . There is a basket location on #3 that is up and to the right , #4 has you throwing with the water behind you , up and to a basket on an incline , and #8 long tee is up on a small hill throwing down to the flat . A lake can come into play mainly on holes 5 , 6 and possibly 7 . There are a couple of neat bridges where hole #5 sites in between . The course has to sit in sort of an L shape . The lake and the bridges make for a nice looking setting on a few of the holes .
The Highlights . None of these holes are going to knock your waterproof socks off , but the park gave the course designers Dennis Byme , and Philip Delwert so little land to work with . Still , they made for some interesting holes . #3 is a tunnel shot with overgrowth and water to the left , and a hill and brush to your right . The basket is placed at the end of the tunnel up to the right on the hill . #6 from the longs can force a right to left over a part of the lake and around a tree to the basket . #8 long is n elevated tee , with either a right to left tight tunnel shot . or trying to go over as many trees as possible left to right the other way . The basket is protected by a small tree in front .
Signature Hole : #5 ( 264', 386' ) . It is a small piece of land between water and 2 bridges . very scenic . You have to keep a shelter out of play on the right , throw over a large cement bowl to the basket sitting with water just behind it .
Time . The course took me about 30 minutes to play . Figure a group of 4 , maybe an hour .

Cons:

#1 Safety . Not bad here , but #4 drives you toward a kids playground which is just beyond it . Also , there is a shelter on the right of #5's fairway . If people are in there , you will have to skip the hole . Some like to fish or hang out at the lake bank . You might have problems on 6 and 7 . You could also chuck a disc to the right into oncoming traffic on #1 on your right .
#2 Navigation . It will be better once the signs come in ( Next Tee , too ) , but you have to turn to the left and go backwards down a cement path from 4-5 , and the tee pad to #8 long is up on the hill next to woods .
#3 Landlocked . There is literally nowhere to go with this course . The golf course is at the end of hole 7 , the playground and rest of the park take up the area after hole #4 . It's a shame the holes can't be lengthened or holes can't be added .
#4 Challenge ; There isn't enough here to worry any ams or even good intermediates . It will be a deuce fest for many .
Disc Risk . This course will attract the curious , and the locals and newbies . Some overgrowth on the right of hole #8 . The course is clean , but the water hazards will be disc eaters for them . Any uncontrolled drives right to left on holes 1-3 , then to the right or behind 5 , and of course 6 &7 , and the catfish have a souvenir .

Other Thoughts:

I am glad that Decatur has a course to go to . The lake and bridges give this course a great look . This will also provide a great stop for someone looking to get off the road a bit . The town of Greensburg will give you a chance to grab a sandwich and fill up your tank . There is some fun factor here with some of the holes . I plan on returning to the course within the year to see what it looks like with the signs and having the rough edges smoothed out .
My Recommendation : A fun course , and with the 2 tees , will be good for the newbies maybe even a family visiting the park .Locals will fall in love with this course . Enough variety for the intermediate . Ams and pros will eat this course up , but might have some fun runs while at it .
Travelers now have a 2nd leg stretching course right off of I-74 , and that also means it is a good add for the Course Collector . I would just tell you to give this course a try . You won't be sorry .

Greensburg gotta course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 2, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Fun course! Nice, level, Blue and Red concrete tee pads at each hole. Brand new Innova Pro 28 baskets (some nice signs are on the away). This is very nice 9-hole Rec-Intermediate course that will teach and challenge new players, while more advanced players will still have fun with the shot lines, terrain and possible birdie and ace runs. Nice park with grassy fairways, mature trees with some underbrush. The course plays around a shallow lake, some nice local terrain changes on several holes. Hole #5 is on a long narrow island, with two cool bridges to go on and off the island. Hole #6 lets the Blue pad players choose the safe route on land or make a run over the lake for possible ace glory. Good use of the land and a great first course for this county!

Cons:

No water, limited parking, maybe 10-12 spaces. It is possible to park on the grass between the lot and the RR. Restrooms are in the park, but off the course. Open seasonally. Lots of geese in the park, means lots of goose poop...

Other Thoughts:

Really easy to get to off of I-74. Fun course if you live in or near the area, or are on a trip and want to stop and stretch your legs! Nice park, gas and food are easily available nearby. I would rate it a 3.5 once all the signs go in and all trimming is done.
