Ferdinand, the Friendly Bull?

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 5, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

When you come to play the nine hole park-style course in Ferdinand, Indiana, you're only a couple of miles north of Santa Claus, so you might also want to visit, while you're in the area 😊

But seriously, this disc golf course is just a mile and a half off the interstate, so it makes for a good stretch on a road trip elsewhere. They have really attractive and informative signage, DisCatcher baskets and adequate (if small at 4' x 8'), mostly level, concrete tees, and hole distances appropriate for the recreational to intermediate player. You will not lose a disc (no underbrush and tremendously well maintained), but you will likely find a friendly line amongst the options here. I nicknamed the holes Upstart, Ceiling, Lane, OnTop, Fade, Gapper, UpHill, Lefty, and Ugh! So that should certainly combine with a look at the hole distances and elevation changes here to give you a fair idea if this is a course you'd be interested in playing.

Cons:

I was actually really enjoying this course for eight holes, and getting ready to give it a 2.5 or better until I came to the ninth. A pretty, downhill tee and fairway points dead into a cluster of 40-50' pines with no apparent gap, theoretically leading to the blind basket position on the other side of the clearing beyond them. The problem is the mounted park bench facing the other way that's only 8' past the basket. I rate first on safety, and this is a huge 'Ugh!'! If it were my course, I'd sacrifice what they were trying to do here and move the basket at least 50' away from where it currently resides, ideally to a location with a suggested fairway line.

Other Thoughts:

They do have an unusual feature to control erosion around the pin here, as they've poured a 3' x3' concrete slab at each basket location. Hopefully it will be a rare skip to actually cause your discs a problem, but we have several courses in Cincinnati that still have 40 year old, 6' round, asphalt 'penalty pads' that can be frustrating…

Good 9-Hole City Park Course drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 3, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Pros- The course is in a nice, clean city park in a small town. I has lots of different options of things to do including several playgrounds, a basketball court, baseball/softball fields, and walking trails. The only thing disc golfers really need to worry about would be people on the walking trails, as they do come close to a couple of baskets.

The course is relatively new (2018), so the baskets, tee pads, and signs are all in good shape. The tee signs are pretty simple, but provide the necessarily information. The course is pretty straight forward, so they don't need to be super detailed.

Even though there are only 9 holes, there are different shots to throw. There are some RHBH, RHFH, some putter shots, mid-range shots, driver shots, and a decent amount of elevation change. It made it really interesting to play and wasn't just the same shot over and over. And, it wasn't very gimmicky either. They used most of the space they had fairly well.

Cons:

Cons- Not a ton of "wow" factor. Even though there was a good amount of elevation change, the holes weren't long enough on those downhill throws to let one really rip, or the baskets were just straight out in front of you without much in the way (holes 1, 4, and 7).

A small con, but the tee pads were a little short (for my liking), but, they were level to the ground behind it, so I just started my approach from off the tee pad and didn't have too much trouble on my run-up. If the course were longer, then maybe longer tee pads would be more necessary.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, this is a solid course for what it is. Definitely not a real destination course, but, if you're passing through the area and wanting a brief stop to play a course, this one is worth stopping at. I'm giving it a "good" (3.0) rating because even though there aren't very any big glaring issues, it just doesn't have that feeling of "that was a great course".

You could host a small tournament or something like a Trilogy or Circuit Challenge there, but probably nothing more than a C Tier.

If there was a "signature hole", it would probably be Hole 9. It's around 250 feet, but downhill a significant amount. From the tee, you can see the basket, but if you want to take the straight gap, there is a very narrow line between two trees that actually bends a little from left to right. There are some over the top options such as a tomahawk, grenade, thumber, or spike-hyzer that can potentially get you close, but it does require a really good shot to get in the circle.

Most of the holes are under 260 feet, so it would be a pretty decent course for beginners, but there are a few shots that are pretty tricky so there is something here for some advanced players as well.

If they ever wanted to put in another 9 holes, there may be room in the rest of the park for that, but, if they didn't, the course as it is is good.
