Small town disc golf with lovely river views

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 1, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Fox River Park is a short, solid neighborhood course. The recent redesign added dual tees that significantly change the required lines. New concrete pads were poured and new signs were installed to finish off the facelift. The layout is pretty straightforward, working it's way around counter-clockwise. Mature trees crowd the fairways, with just 3 holes being on the open side. There's a slight elevation drop on hole 3, while the rest of the course is relatively flat. A practice basket sits out front with plenty of space for groups to throw. Nice bathrooms close by. Basically zero risk of losing plastic here. It's usually not crowded so it's a good spot to practice. All holes are par 3 with lengths between 155-300'

Cons:

The course could use more seating and garbage cans near teepads. Water comes into play on hole 7; the river could have been featured more but that would guarantee players losing discs and be similar to the old layout. Adding a second basket or alt pin position to each hole would increase replayability. Adding a par 4 should be considered as well.

Other Thoughts:

The 2022 redesign is a welcome improvement and makes better use of the available space. The course isn't too demanding but does require precision to score well. Intermediate and above players will be underwhelmed but it's a great spot for Recreational players and newbies to hone their skills.

A doubles league meets here every Tuesday at 5 PM for those looking for a little friendly competition. It's a short detour off of i80 and Ottawa itself has a ton to offer: the downtown is quaint but has a wide variety of restaurants, bars and shopping. O-Nett gaming in particular is a locally owned hobby store that sells new discs, videogames and has cool retro arcade cabinets to play. Shoutout to Dana Vicich for his contributions to the course.

*I saw a bald eagle flying overhead last time I played here! They nest over by Starved Rock State Park.
