Kansas must play

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 29, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

Turf Tee pads were mostly in good shape. He is still working on a few of them.
Course has decent flow for the most part, pretty easy navigation
This is not an easy course, yes, this is a good thing

Cons:

Even the White course is tough, even though it's shorter, it's still not for beginners.
You will hit a tree
It's not too far from Kansas City, but is off a dirt road. The dust off the road was bad on the first couple of holes if a car drove by.

Other Thoughts:

Sorry I didn't write this one sooner. (I also wrote this when I was sick and late at night, this is the edited version with spelling fixed and thought filled in that I left out)

it's not often I get blown away by a course. This is a labor of love of Cooper Arnold who has been working on this course for 9 years. And it shows. He has really done a great job, not in just designing the course but all the little things he has worked on getting the course in playable shape.

Best part, he is still working on it.

I contacted Cooper the day before I was going to be in the area course collecting. He told me he would be on the course all day, working on some Tee Pads and then playing with some friends in the afternoon.

We worked out a tee time and I met up with him and signed the waver. He told me a couple of the tricky spots, but I was going to use UDisc anyways.

Let me say this, the course is not one you will shoot good blind. There are several holes you can't see the basket from the tee box as they are over the hill, around the corner or hidden by trees. The course is a wide range of shots form open bomber holes to tight wooded holes.

The first hole is a monster par 4, if you got a big arm you might get a 3 here. It would be a 600ft left then right shot. Or if you are like me, throw your first shot in the pond OB trying to lay it up.
I didn't quite turn over my second shot and land in the pond again. Then laid it up and took my 6.

After that, I settled down and actually threw pretty good.

Hole 2 is a good par 3 hole, it has an island green due to a creek in front of the basket and tree's guarding the basket. I looked at the alternate tee here, looked like a fun little shot.

Hole 3 is a large island green you got to navigate though 1 of 2 small windows (or maybe throw over the top) and the basket is raised.

Hole 4, is one of those holes you just have no idea what to throw your first time around. The basket is over the hill, though a nice grove of trees and down with an OB creek behind the basket.

Holes 5 and 6 have mostly open fairways, but the basket is tucked into the tree's. These holes are not exactly short either.

Hole 7 is the opposite, VERY tight hole off the tee box, then a long open shot to the basket. Key here is to make the gap, stay in bounds and get a decent upshot for a 3.

Then we get into the meat of the course. Hole 8 has a mostly open fairway that get very narrow as you have to throw up a hill at the end. On top of that, the edge of the fairways are evergreen trees, get off the fairway and these will block your next shot.

Hole 9, man, what a hole. This is a placement/stay on the fairway hole. The hole kind of goes to the left a little, then to the right. Then the approach is to the left and up a hill. This is a HARD but actually fair hole if you throw it right.

Follow that up with hole 10, another long hole with an OB fence line on your right. Nice fairway and slight elevation changes to the basket. Another example of a hole you have to play a few times to figure out where you want to land your drive.

Hole 11, birdie opportunity, elevated tee pad across a valley to the basket on the other side. It's tight, but it's there.

Holes 12 and 13 are also on top of the ridge, hole 13 is stuck in a mass of tree's. Placement in your upshot is important if you don't park this hole on your drive as you may not get a clear shot to the basket.

I think the most memorable hole is hole 14. It's a birdie or die hole as the basket is perched on the edge of a drop off. The area below the basket has been cleaned nicely, but it's a killer angle to try to make that shot.

I also really enjoyed throwing hole 15, It's 400ft off the top of the hill to a basket in the open. I threw a stable Roc and was in Circle 2. Should have thrown the Classic Roc or putter. (if you ever throw shots downhill, you learn to throw shot range discs to not fly off hard left or right)

Hole 16 - The only "bad" hole on the course. It's uphill to a raised basket.

Hole 17 - Nice hole over the edge of the hill and to your left. You have trees to the left and trees to the right. If you can throw a 580ft drive you might get the 2 here, most of us are going to be happy with a 3.

The finishing hole is a rough hole 18 too. Throwing from the edge of the woods on a raised tee box, you can attempt to throw longer, or shorter as you are throwing over OB's on the left and right. True risk/reward hole. 2nd shot is even harder. OB line on the right making a small fairway with the pond on the left. The fairway does open up near the green that is sitting on the dam. However the basket is actually held up over nothing. Another make the putt or raised basket shot.

I did upload pictures of all the holes and of the Temp Tee Sign he had on the course. Tee signs are being worked on and coming soon he said.

Would I play here again? Oh heck yea. I thing I may try the Whites someday.

Oh, Cooper is a super nice guy, the course should not be considered free to play, but he does not have a set price. It's and "ability to pay" course. So make sure you make a donation so he can keep working and making this course a true gem.

As I was playing this course I said it was the best/hardest course in Kansas. Its up there with Longview in Ozawkie as the 2 best courses in the state (and I have now played 300 of them) Its not even that far from Longview, would make a killer day trip.
