Nice Arboretum, Ok course

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 11, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

+Nice color signs that tell you hole #, length, and give a pretty accurate layout of the hole. Also a sign at the beginning with course info. Navigation was pretty easy even on my first time. Next tees were noted on the previous sign if you pay attention.
+Nice baskets that were all in good shape. I haven't played on this variety before and forget what they were called but they were solid.
+Good variety in hole lengths. Shortest were around 200' and there was one at 500'. Some ace opportunities. This course is better for beginner to intermediate players.
+Despite the water and flora, there isn't a high chance to lose a disc. It certainly can and will happen but it would take a pretty bad shot.
+Overall, a really nice park with a large pond, stage, gravel walking trail, boardwalks, educational arboretum with a variety of trees and shrubs, and there was a building with a nice bathroom on the north side of the park near a parking lot. The course was mostly separate from other amenities here besides the path.

Cons:

-It's pretty open and on the edge of a small town on the plains. Definitely will get windy often.
-A little more open than I would prefer. The course didn't force too many lines.
-Missed opportunities from a design perspective. There could have been some really cool water carries and/or challenging greens/landing areas. I understand that the designers were probably limited to the area south of the pond but it would have been really cool to have a bit more freedom of design to use more of the property.
-Really flat, not more than a foot or two of elevation change on the course.
-No tees, just grass near the signs. There wasn't any obvious wear near the signs so I don't think this course has gotten a lot of play yet.

Other Thoughts:

+This is a decent course in a very nice setting. I'll probably stop by in the warmer months to check it out again.
+Small improvements like already planted trees growing, concrete tees, and alternate pin positions could really enhance this course and push it toward a 3.
+If you happen to be travelling by on US81 or SD44, this course is worth a stop. Unless you are a course bagger, I wouldn't go out of the way too much for this one.
