Here's a Thought...

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 12, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nine red Veteran baskets, each easily visible from its respective tee.

For being on school grounds, some of he hole design is quite good. Hole 4 is a wide left-to-right hyzer that crashes toward a basket pocketed into the woods, 5 is a short tunnel which gets dangerous if you get off the path, 6 is perched at the top of a hill.

Hole 8 is an example of a forced shot. Something that hits the gap in the treeline and finishes left is the play to go for. There are hero lines to be had, but nothing near as easy as the intended route. 3, 5, and 6 are other examples of the intended routes not being the only option, but probably being the best option. If you have the skill and want to make things interesting there's a fun option.

The thin gap ace run on 7 is reachable for almost everyone but difficult to get right. And the tree ceilings on 2 and 3 keep them from being a standard approach shot.

Cons:

The tees are... very small. Maybe 3ft by 3ft. Conrad does not approve.

The wide open 1 and 9. Both about 200ft, both with barely any noteworthy elevation, one bush that's easy to get around on hole 9.

The brush on the edges of 4 and 7 is quite thick and quite thorny. 7 is whatever, but 4 is a blind run at a blind pin. Playing it blind could lead to blinding pain from the thorns you were blind to as you blindly searched for your disc since you were blind to where the basket and treeline were.

Other Thoughts:

The course does well to stay out of the way of the rest of the school's infrastructure, and with so little traffic in that area the only question is when can they get approval for 9 more holes to the south of hole 6.

This is a quality school 9-hole to add onto the course at the lake, and it's just two minutes away! So long as school isn't in session if you're going to one, just do both. Don't expect anything amazing, but expect a very good course for schoolyard standards.

Short but Fun

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 12, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course makes up for its lack of distance with a lot of variety, even with only nine holes. Everything you could expect of an ordinary niner are here, and some aspects are better than usual.

No two holes are the same, and every hole has the chance to be a highlight. Holes 1 and 9 are pretty open, there are some scattered trees on most of the rest, plus one tunnel shot. There are a lot of low ceilings, and while it sometimes doesn't matter because the holes are really short, they do teach you to not rely on a wide hyzer to get everywhere - except hole 8, where the optimal line is a wide RHBH/LHFH hyzer.

If you skip holes 4-6, this becomes a fairly decent beginner course. You have a nice 6-hole loop that is relatively stress-free. In some ways, I think that's what this course was designed for - kids playing a short course, with some optional holes added for more experienced players.

Cons:

The "top" of the course is all really short. The trees keep things interesting, but with most holes under 200 feet, the low ceilings won't obstruct shots all that much.

Even for beginners, this doesn't feel like a great course. The woods are pretty thick, so holes 4 and 5 will cause a lot of issues without even being difficult holes in general. Hole 7 is also short but plays across some thick brush - again punishing bad shots without being a hard hole.

There are no tee signs, but that really only matters on hole 4, where you don't really know where you're going. You also might accidentally walk to hole 7's teepad, which is closer to the basket of 3.

The only bomber shot is hole 4, and it doesn't really count as one because the teeshot is blind, and there's woods around the basket.

Other Thoughts:

I would like to see some additional holes added here. The woods near hole 5 has some extra space, as do the areas north of hole 7 and east of hole 2.

The teepads are super small, but I really don't mind. If more holes were added, some of the current holes could stay, but change hole number, meaning no sign to be replaced.
