This is not your Grandpa's Disc Golf Course, this one has some length!

Pros:

Yes, that name got your attention, didn't it? The course is in a nice park adjoining a very nice neighborhood in Hurricane, UT. Hurricane is close to Saint George, the largest city in this part of Utah and the southern gateway to Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks. The park has great grass, a couple of playgrounds, a paved walking path and the namesake pond.
The Chainstar Pro baskets are in great shape, red in color and most have GPDGC Next Tee signs hanging from the baskets. They are also numbered.
The tees are all paved, either paving stones bordered with timber, or painted on the walking path or sidewalks. While the walking path probably gets quite a bit of traffic, hopefully the wait isn't too long on those holes.
The tee signs are also very good, hole diagram, distance and par. They also contain the OB rules for events and a few even outline which divisions can use alternate tees.
The course design was able to squeeze as many holes as they could out of the great grass available. I count 12 of the holes use the grass either for the fairway or green area, including what looks like island greens on #5 and #9. Since the park sits well below the neighborhood, the entrances are sloped into the park. This was used very well, with 12 of the 18 holes having some type of elevation change.
Two parking lots and two sets of nice restrooms are also in the park. Hole #1 starts from the lot on the north end, then #18 ends near the southern lot.

Cons:

For some strange reason, #12 basket has been moved to the grass area near #18 basket. The basket is now across the parking lot from the tee and in the opposite direction from the hole on the tee sign. Plus, it is no where near #13 tee. Since the hole is laid out with the basket near the walking path (and I found the in-ground pole), I can only think it created some interference with the walking path. (You can play #12 to basket #13, which I did, then walk downhill and play #13.)
#7 and #8 are both away from the grass area, using gravel, desert and underbrush for the fairway, bordering the walking path along the pond. Oh yea, they share the same area, going in opposite directions. Both baskets are hidden from the tee and most of the fairway, not a bad thing, but tough to find your first time there.
#9 and #15 both use the walking path for much of their fairway, this could definitely lead to some delays.
Since several of the baskets are located on the grass (so mowing must not be an issue), I don't like the idea of having a few holes lengthened, putting the basket in the rocks bordering the park. Its just tough on your discs and putting stance.

Other Thoughts:

Since snow is in the forecast for later this week, I probably won't get to play any other courses here is SW Utah. Grandpa's Pond is the best of the courses I have played in the area, I would prefer it over Pine View, even without the work at Pine View essentially cutting off 12 of the holes.
One thing I've noticed in the courses here, as well as many in FL, is that the parks have very little area for courses, so they have to move into overgrown areas. This course has just a few of those, so can be played in solo or competitive rounds.
While many holes require straight shots and control to avoid OB, several are laid out to require certain throws. #5 actually offers two routes to the island green and #17 requires a left to right throw around a few trees and a 30 foot wall of rock at the edge of the park.
A couple of signature holes really stand out here:
#9 is a 303' Par 3 with the pond bordering the right side, the basket is located on grass, to the right and about 40-50' beyond the corner of the pond. There is a bailout area to the left, but the large rocks there could lead to a tricky upshot.
The 412' 16th is one of those you will want to throw several drives on. Teeing from the edge of the parking lot, the wide grass fairway gradually drops to about the 250-300' mark where a hillside of rocks sits, then the fairway goes left and up about 20' to the basket. A very tough Par 3.
With most of Pine View unavailable, I imagine Grandpa's Pond will be getting a lot of rounds for a while, I hope this does not lead to unfortunate interactions with other park users. If they do have events here, it would be a good idea to try and close the park, for DG only. I would play this course often if I lived in the area, its a great use of the space, requires many different throws, and the scenery of the pond and surrounding mountain ranges is beautiful.
