Disc golf and sheep (Schafe) 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 1, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Great tee signs and baskets
-Fun shots for RHBH, with some trees and buildings that can come into play
-Camping on site
-Clean bathrooms and place to wash your hands and discs (you'll need to!) after the round (free to use)
-Friendly owner and no cost to play or park

Cons:

-Sheep come into play on at least two holes
-Goats came into play on hole 1
-Animal droppings all over the place
-Mostly mid-range shots, with many holes about 200-250 ft long
-A little out of the way unless you were driving near Dresden
--I would have scored this higher if not for the sheep and fear of the short electric fences (none were electrified when I played)

Other Thoughts:

I played this course 1 June 2019 while driving from Leipzig to Dresden. This disc golf course is set in an active animal shelter (https://www.tierheim-riesa.de/). In addition, some of the teens working at the shelter have also had a rough life, and this is part of their rehabilitative therapy/training.

There was also a flock of sheep on the property, some goats, and other livestock that can alter your ability to play the course. It is a farm, after all.

When I arrived, I was met by a very helpful woman (I believe the owner of the property) who spoke little English, but was very patient with my limited German, and she provided information about the course. She indicated the course was open, free of cost, but that there were a few aspects to make note of: 1) she warned that some of the fencing that surrounds the livestock could be electrified, and 2) she indicated I should not hole out (hit the chains) on the baskets that were surrounded by sheep--this disturbs them quite a bit. This was true for holes #5 and #10, which were in the sheep pen. Sheep droppings are everywhere, not just in the pen, since it appears that the sheep move from one area to the next.

There is camping on site, and several people were taking advantage of it. Per night: 4 Euros per tent, 4 EU per adult, and 3 EU for kids younger than 15 years. Trailer was 7.5 EU. There was a very nice bathroom and shower, separate for men and women, and an outdoor sink to wash dishes and the like. All very clean and well maintained.

There are 11 holes using 8 baskets. Each hole has a sign, although I could not find the sign for #11. Distances are in meters, and the cartoon map on each hole sign accurately depicts where the basket is located. Some baskets are not visible from the tee, so walking down the fairway is helpful. Also, the number visible on the basket is oriented relative to the tee box (faces the tee), and some baskets have multiple tees (and multiple numbers, but in different locations on the rim).

Hole lengths vary, from 44 m (#1) to 129 m (#3). Most are 60 to 85 meters long. The property is flat, with a slight mound for hole #3/5. Buildings can come into play, especially on hole #2, which has a fairway lined by two farm buildings. Trees are numerous but not very tall. The grass was mostly mowed (or eaten), but there were areas where it was quite tall (#4).

Campers are spread throughout holes 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8. Be cautious when teeing off, and all camping guests and workers (and livestock) have right of way. Please be courteous to them all!

Teepads are dirt and only found by locating the tee sign and looking for wear in the soil. Baskets were in great shape.

Hole by hole:
1. Tee is to left of large course map. Fairway (=Bahn) is over a pen with goats in it. The basket is on a raised mound (Insel=island), with an edge of laid bricks. While short, all of it is OB except for being up on the mound or past it. A drop zone is to the right. This is the first spot you jump over the low fence. It turns out it was not electrified when I played, but could be in the future. Next tee is off the mound to your right.

2. Thread the needle between two farm buildings. Beyond buildings is a low wall that has a "dip" in it, and some trees just past the wall. The basket is just past the trees. The #2 is visible on the yellow band. Next tee is past basket in middle of field.

3. Longest hole and basket is hidden behind a tree, and on a slight mound. Trees to right of fairway cover/protect car campers, so be cautious on that side. Next tee is to left of basket 3.

4. Basket is near road, tucked in back corner, with trees along left side of approach. Basket is just a little left of the line-up with the electrical pole in the distance. Cross the road to next tee, in sheep pen.

5. Tee is next to low trees, and was surrounded by sheep when I played. Shoot back to basket #3 on mound (hole 3 and 5 use same basket). Next tee is behind you, across road.

6. Basket is near the WC (restrooms), under a cluster of trees, and not visible from the tee. Be sure not to throw when people are using the outdoor sinks, which are close to where a hyzer shot could land on this hole. Next tee is at corner of building and near the fence.

7. Basket is down the path, straight shot, but approaching where campers will have tents set up. Next tee is to left.

8. Basket is beyond a tree, but this fairway is in the middle of potential tent camping areas. Walk back towards sign for #9 on left edge of fairway.

9. Basket is on the edge of a cluster of trees, over a low sheep fence. There were lots of sheep in this area when I played, so I could not really drive (I would have hit some sheep, most likely). Also, I did not hole out. But the sheep were already upset by my mere presence. Sign for next tee is to left.

10. Basket is the same as #6, near the WC and outdoor sinks. Again, be wary of others in the flight path of your disc.

11. I could not find the sign for this tee, but you shoot back to basket #2. The tee is to the left of the WC if your back is to the sinks.
