Hawkins

Reviewed: Played on:May 13, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

18 holes with either rubber mats in fair condition, or paver block tees, in great condition. Course winds its way through a heavily wooded area offering a number of right turning holes, a few left turning holes, and even a handful of par 4's that will demand two good shots to pick up the birdie. Fairways are well defined and groomed. Prodigy baskets with red bands and baskets are easy to see and are in good shape. Classic New England style course with a forehand lean. Green tees are a short, par 54, 200' or less option for quick rounds and ace runs and are fun for beginners. Ample parking.

Cons:

Off the fairway is fairly punishing (good in a sense, but not good for finding errant throws). Many good holes, but no one real signature hole that stands out above the others. Can be buggy in the late spring to early fall.

Other Thoughts:

When I was there, the front nine was being upgraded to paver block tees, so that should alleviate the rubber mat tees and bring the course to a 3.5. You will need to have a good forehand if you want to score well here as the course calls for a number of those types of shots. I'd want to come back and try the green pads as that looked like something enjoyable for me. Fun course if you like tight, but fair wooded rounds.

All 18 holes are complete 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 5, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Many improvements have been made with regards to brush, thorns and continues to improve.
Almost all holes have pads.
Holes 10 and 12 have paving stone pads. More will be put in.

Cons:

16 does not have a pad yet.
Still more thorns to be removed

Other Thoughts:

This is still a young course. Only 2 years old. It continues to improve all the time. Huge difference between 2 years ago and now.

Very cool . . almost complete. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 10, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Same as other reviewers.

Cons:

Same as other reviewers.

Other Thoughts:

Just a heads up that all 18 holes are essentially complete, just a single missing tee pad at this time.

Still some rough edges but very much an enjoyable course with nothing but potential to get even better.

Work In Progress 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 1, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Rubber Tee Pads
-Signage is OK (Front 9)
-Nice Baskets
-Good mix of long/short and left/right
-Old rock walls all over course are interesting
-Very good directional signs to get you around the course
-9 hole loops
-Log benches at every tee box
-Good map

Cons:

-Growing pains, lots of little stumps in fairways
-Back 9 is in progress, no signage, baskets 10-13 in, 14-18 not.
-Could use some brooms at the tee box to sweep off pine needles
-No real open holes
-Needs a sign to let you know the back 9 not finished yet

Other Thoughts:

Hawkins Woods DGC is located in its namesake park west of Plainville, MA. Begun as a 9 hole, it is currently being expanded to 18 holes. This is in process. As of my playing in Oct of 2020, holes 10-13 are in, 14 is there except for the basket. 15-18 are roughed out, but not there at all. 10-14 have orange flags marking a tee box. The front 9 is in nice shape. No real open holes here, but decently wide fairways. A good mix of left/right doglegs and short/long holes. Nice new baskets caught well. The log benches are cool and you walk through gaps in cool stone walls several times. There are a lot of small red directional arrow signs that make navigation easy. A finished 18 hole course here might even jump up to a 4, I would add brooms at the tee boxes (lots of pine needles) and maybe get a port-o-john to have at least some facilities. I enjoyed my round (until I ran out of baskets), would play again, however this was a vacation time way away from home, so that is unlikely. When they get this finished, it will be worth a trip.

Excited! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 27, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Fun clean lines to the pin and fairways.
Good use of space creating a variety of different shots that opens up your bag and gets you thinking.
Most tees have pads.
Temporary tee signs with layout, yardage distance (in meters as well), and hole par.
Excellent directional signage throughout the course.
Lots of neat places to sit.
Easy waking.
Course plays relatively quick, without seeming like a "short" course.
Great baskets.
Practice basket at start with good room to warm up with some up shots as well.
Potential, lots and lots of potential!

Cons:

Pretty raw. It's a brand new course, yes, but if it wasn't the middle of winter the brush and thorn bushes would be pretty out of control.
Couple of bumpy tee pads.
A couple of holes no tee pads.
Lots of tiny tree stumps along the fairways, yes it's a new course, you often see this.

Other Thoughts:

The vibe on this course was good going in and I was not disappointed after playing a couple of rounds here. This is a great location for some good old fashioned New England disc golf.
Potential, potential, potential!!!
I really enjoyed throwing Hawkins Woods.
The tee shots force you to hit some demanding lines and at times give you a choice at your own adventure.
It's a tight course that gives you just enough room to let loose.
The layout is easy to navigate, a few stumps and bumps in the road that will hopefully get straightened out along the way.
The landscape is pretty thick in a lot of spots.
There is a lot of small brush and thorns that needs to be cleared out if this place is going to be playable during the spring and summer months.
So, calling all golfers, calling all disc golfers!
If you're a player near by this unpolished gem of a course....LET'S GO!!! Volunteer for some work days and get Hawkins up to par. We got something here for sure.

This is going to be wonderful.... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 14, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Tee signs on every hole. Excellent direction signs, so navigation is super easy. Good mix of left & right finishing holes, with pretty fair looks at the lines. Even have fly pads down for most of the holes.

Cons:

The course is still very new, which means it is still very rough. Virtually every Con I can think of will be a non-issue within the next year or so (natural tee pads. thorns/brush/stumps). Its hard to even get too bothered by that stuff, because of how good course looks for as new as it is.

For the time being, wear heavy duty pants. The prickers & thorns are intense right now.

Other Thoughts:

This course has so much potential. I cannot wait to see what happens with it. Most 9 holes I've played are basically pitch n putt par 27. Hawkins is clearly designed with another 9 holes in mind. It is a challenging par 30 that will make for a fantastic front 9 when the full 18 are in. One or two ace runs. A few chances to really bomb a drive. Definitely worth checking out.
