The Potential is Paramount

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 4, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

1) Henderson Hills is a newly installed course in Henderson, KY on the former grounds of Henderson Municipal Golf Course. The property is large and spacious in downtown Henderson and right beside the river. Plenty of room for growth and design beyond what already exists.

2) As the course name implies, Henderson Hills contains a massive amount of elevation changes. You will be throwing (and by consequence walking) up, down, across, and on side slopes all day. There are very few "flat" holes that I recall.

3) Amenities are definitely improving. New Latitude 64 bright yellow baskets, the majority of holes have large 5' x 12' textured concrete tee-pads, and full color tee signs with hole map have been installed.

4) Most holes have multiple tee locations (short and long) with a few having multiple pin locations. I did notice that a lot of the long tee pad locations had newly installed concrete pads (previously they had rubber matting temporarily). There is definite signs that this course continues to be worked on and improved.

5) This course currently offers 20 playable holes and allows you to select from 6 different playable layouts depending on how hardcore you want to be that day. And despite being on an old golf course, the "long" layout is still a manageable sub 8'000 feet design.

6) Variety is well executed here. There are definitely a couple holes that are throwing down golf course fairways, however, this course hasn't been a ball golf course in quite some time. There are no "greens" as the regular grass has almost completely overtaken them. Sand bunkers have been taken over by grass and help create unique shapes for the designer to utilize. The typical manicured fairways are now just like a regular lawn and roller was not the optimal play hardly ever. This course does a good job of cutting through the woods and creating tree guarded (with the help of elevation) holes that don't make it feel like a golf course most of the time. They even throw in a couple open but intimidating holes right on the banks of the Ohio River where you are exposed to the wind and helpless against the elevation.

7) This course benefits from being directly across a small access road from Atkinson Park, another 18 hole disc golf course in Henderson. One stop and you can get in 2 courses pretty quickly. Tournaments can easily be held here that can handle tons of players or different skill levels and it provides a great opportunity for Safari holes or a massive "Gold" layout if they really wanted to build a pro style layout.

8) The short tees provide a manageable distance course while still maintaining the challenge of elevation and tricky green and a few must hit gaps. While the long tees ratchet up distance but keep the feel and challenge of the short design without feeling like a different course.

9) Signature hole is probably the water tower hole. A short dog leg right par 4 uphill the entire way. It is protected by dense woods on it's right boundary and multiple large low ceiling trees on the left. Tee shots must navigate to a very small flat window just shy of the water tower without pushing into the woods on the right. Your second shot must navigate a small rounded right to the left tunnel (water tower on left, dense woods right, about the width of a car to a blind green perched inside of small but heavy tree cover with a steep drop off behind. It is not a visually stunning hole by any mean, but a hole that is always talked about and either loved or hated.

Cons:

1) I'm usually not much of a fan of disc golf on a ball golf course. The two sports just don't utilize space the same way. But that said, courses like this soften my position since it is a repurposed golf course. The course is good in it's current form but planting trees and creating some more separation visually from what it used to be to what it is now would be a huge improvement.

2) Lack of available water, bathroom facilities or a pro shop. Despite repurposing the old golf course and the "pro shop" building still existing on the property, it doesn't appear to be in use by the disc golfers in charge of the course. Maybe a long term goal that would make this course great.

3) Lack of water features. Even though two holes play along the Ohio River, water hazards non existent and the river is unreachable in my opinion. The course could greatly benefit from some added water or more natural OB.

4) Not picturesque. The course is surrounded by a Hospital complex on one side, the Ohio River/Atkinson park on the other, and the backside of the main drag resturaunts. This course lacks the visual beauty one would expect from a traditional ball golf course.

5) Though not a long course in distance, this course will require quite a bit of walking coupled with the massive changes in elevation. To add to it there are some long walks between holes. Be prepared for a hike.

6) There was no course signage or map that I could locate in any of the multiple parking lots or near hole #1. Even with the help of U-Disc there are multiple baskets visible from several of the tees and its difficult in the open sections of the course to know which basket to throw at. Navigation is not intuitive.

Other Thoughts:

Henderson Hills is definitely a work of love by the local club and has come an incredibly long way since it first opened to the public. The fact that it is free to play and is constantly being upgraded is a huge boost for this course. Just across the river from Evansville, IN, this course has some stiff competition but sets the bar high itself among those courses and makes the trip across the bridge into KY worth it if you are in the Evansville area. I would rank this below a casual round destination course, but right at a must play when in the area and/or travel a couple hours for a tournament here. Can't wait to see how far this course comes along in the future.
