Pros:

Beautiful resort with amazing pro shop and bbq restaurant on site. All 4 courses compliment each other well. The golf course has some amazing fun downhill throws with good tee signs and turf pads. Hole 1 and 2 are fun downhill bomber par 3s. Course layout is very well done. On ball golf course and it's golf means you can throw drives as far as you can, friendly staff and good add to Washington disc golf

Cons:

Very wide open for the most part, and outside of a couple holes feels kind of repetitive. I feel like I could play most the course with just a couple drivers and mid/putter. They did a good job with the land I'm just not a huge ball golf course kind of guy

Other Thoughts:

The elevation change is great here, and the course is well designed worth the 4 stars but for some reason just dosen't have that wow factor the other top tier courses posses for me

Mixed Feelings 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 18, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is set on a former ball golf course a ways off the beaten path of the I-5 corridor. It is in a beautifully wooded area with alot of mature forest that it wends through. I like that it starts with a couple medium long par 3s going down hill to lull you into a false sense of security. The difficulty quickly ramps up, especially if your average drive is in the 275-300 ft range. That being said, I feel that most holes were possible to par on a good day with the exception of 17. This was the most memorable hole, 825' par 4 doesn't sound bad, except there is a deep gully that those of us with shorter drives will end up on the bottom and need to climb out. Brutal but I liked it.
Other very memorable hole was 12. Shortest on course but had to do a blind shot up a steep enbankment with very difficult lines to the pin. Pro and con, cool tough hole put in for variety and flow but about need a spotter, be pretty easy to lose a disc going for the pin.
Course made very good use of the elevation available and for the most part signage was on point.

Cons:

Not too many. Signs were occasionally misleading. There are no numbers on the baskets or any high vis to help you find them. Not normally a problem, but with long holes can be hard to spot pin and on hole 6 basket is up out of sight on left side of hill but basket for 7 is in a plausable if long place from looking @ tee sign. I didn't realize I had messed up until I got to tee for 9(didn't look close @ sign on 8) and had to back track. Group behind me was doing the same. we found the hole together and continued but there wasn't much to indicate a basket was up on hillside.
The astroturf pads were better than I expected but a few were a little short for the hole and were raised just enough couldn't start behind them.
Only other big one for me was price. It is a cool place with 2 (soon to be 3) good courses, but only offering a day pass makes me pay too much since I will only ever be able to play one of these long courses in a day without hurting myself. When I talked about this to one of the owners he indicated it would be too hard to keep an eye on people so they didn't play more than one. My impression over the years that I have played is that this community is pretty honest so this struck me as a poor excuse to overcharge people.

Other Thoughts:

This was my 4th time trying to play here and it finally worked out. It was mostly worth the trip but I don't know how often I will go out of my way to play this one. That being said, I am glad I did and am very glad to have a true (bleep) you pro course in the Seattle area. This one should give you all you want. Couple changes making some of the pins easier to locate and pars slightly better this is a easy 4.5, some of the other planned changes may make it a 5

There’s Little Doubt In My Mind That Kayak Point Gold Is The # 1 Course In Washington State! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 2, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

have to say it's probably the # 1 Disc Golf destination in the state, too. Upon completion of the Blue course, possibly by next spring, that designation will just be a little justified.

Kayak Gold has the same great amenities as the Red course. Outstanding informative signs, great level carpet pads and the Mach VII baskets. Although it's a monster playing at over 10,000 feet but at least half of the holes feature some kind of wonderful downhills whether they're playing down multi-tiered hillsides like # 1 and # 5 or the more gradual downhills of many others. With the length here, one would think that a weiny armed rec player such as myself would be totally overwhelmed, but just like on the Red course, even with the constant length, it's a comfortable round for me. Only # 17, at 845' playing up a small hill most of the way did I feel completely overmatched.

Although all the downhills were great fun, my vote for signature hole goes to # 9 and it's 510' hole through a thick clumping of trees and then up a smallish hill. My vote for the course's most unique hole goes to # 12, a short (234'), blind uphill throw which is probably the easiest hole here.

Cons:

As much as I like this course, I believe it has a few cons.

$26 including a cart is still a little pricey in my world.

On some holes, you are playing in a field of tall grass which when laying over provides the perfect hiding place for your disc.

No water and no memorable "top of the world type hole."

This is probably more of a suggestion than a con but I would like to see some steps installed to # 4's basket which is set in a small gully. I could see the hill eroding badly with a constant stream of players going up and down the hillside here.

Other Thoughts:

I have two thoughts here. The first is for any review readers from other parts of the country, especially those of you from the heartland. If you haven't played a course like Kayak Point Gold with all of it's delicious elevation, you need to. To compare Kayak Point with a totally flat course like, say, Blue Ribbon Pines is not fair. BRP is obviously a well designed, highly competitive course but I am so firmly convinced that elevation on a course is so important. Of course, you need to incorporate a great design to compliment that elevation.

My second thought is for all you Washington golfers. If you are a serious disc golfer, in other words, if you are any good at all, then this is the course you need to play. If Sea Tac or Shelton Springs is your idea of a great disc golf outing with lots of challenge, then there is no doubt that Kayak Gold or Red is an absolute must play! It combines the advanced level challenge of those courses with all these great downhills and a couple of tricky wooded holes. Very few courses match Kayak's wonderful use of elevation.

Why then can I ONLY award Kayak Gold a 4.5 and not the 5.0 that Flip City, Harmony Bends, Idlewild, and Beaver Ranch received? For one, Kayak doesn't quite have the breathtaking natural beauty that Flip and Beaver Ranch possess. It doesn't feature any one amazing/creative hole like Idlewild or Harmony Bends has. It also isn't maintained to the highest standards like these 5.0 courses.

Long, fun course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 25, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

The Gold Course is a 10,000+ ft, open course designed to be the most challenging of four courses at the Kayak Point Disc Golf Resort. This is the big brother to the Red course, with mostly wide open fairways. The fairways are a little tighter on some holes than on Red, and the distance is significantly longer. The main challenge in this course is the elevation change. The majority of the holes play downhill either the whole way or downhill off the tee and back up to the basket. The elevation change provides challenge in shot selection and angle control. I went on a relatively calm day and it was a challenge, so I can imagine a windy day being very tough. Basket placements are also done well, with lots of elevation utilized on the green and guardian trees on a number of holes.

-Tee pads are nice turf
-Tee signs are professional and informative
-Fairways are a fair width
-Grass in the rough is kept long, which is nice because it makes for more challenging footing and adds a degree of punishment for missing the fairway
-Pin placements are interesting utilizing trees and elevation to challenge putts
-Elevation change makes for challenging shot selection and angle control
-Location is beautiful, course is well-maintained

Cons:

Hole 12 seems out of place and is not a very well designed hole. It is similar to Hole 6 on Reds, but feels much more like a hole that was put in just to regain some elevation and get to the next tee. From the tee you are staring at a 15' vertical wall of dirt, and have to throw some sort of trick shot up and over to a fairway with low hanging branches...so reaching the pin is nearly impossible on the shortest hole on the course.

On many holes, the cart paths that cut across the fairway play as OB...I'm not opposed to OB on or over cart paths that line the fairways (like most of the Red course), but having OB 'rivers' that run through the fairway seem arbitrary and annoying.

Not a huge deal, but there are four 600+ ft par 3s on the course...while I can see a big arm getting all the way to Hole 1 off the drive due to the severe downhill slope, the other holes have an extremely guarded green (3,6), or a tunnel that starts 400' down the fairway (8). These are all great holes, but the par may need to be adjusted.

Other Thoughts:

If you don't have a huge arm, ignore the par on this course and you'll have a great time, but if you want to score well, play the Red course. Fun long shots with more elevation change than most (any?) course in Western Washington.

I walked the course and logged 5.3 miles in a 2.5 hour solo round. Carts are available at the pro shop for rental.

Humbling 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 19, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Beautiful is the first thing that comes to mind. Brand new Mach VII baskets, and astroturf tee pads. Big course, long but challenging, while very open there are bunkers so your placement is key. Lots of vertical, and stunning scenery, can't wait to see how it develops. Might be walk-able outside a hot summer day but still wouldn't advise it. Carts available and amazing to have. Several trash cans along the way to dispose of drink and snack wrappers, use them! Had quite a few deer with fawns on course, please be courteous to the wildlife.

Cons:

Very new, like a good disc, a good course needs break in. With time if a few cedars were planted in the big open spaces it could create more routes, not sure if they can in the first year of their deal though. While forgiving in some places due to its size, the vertical challenge is unforgiving while trying to obtain max distance within the mowed fairway. Lots of nettles in the rough, tall grass is tall and hard to find discs. Only open for 6 weeks so far and picked up 3 empty dasani water bottles, and a can. I would like to assume people accidentally left these, but if you are on course and see this, pick it up, a trash can is only a couple holes away. DO NOT LITTER!!!

Other Thoughts:

Can't wait to get a few more rounds under my belt here, for the first time with many blind shots there is some guessing. While long and open, a 400ft rip seems mediocre here but you cannot let it rattle your confidence. Probably should have played the red course first. This isn't like red vs blue at Tall Firs, this is a legit PDGA pro course. I can't wait to be a spectator when the top tier pro's come through. While its an old ball golf course that's been abandoned for a couple years, and you feel it, it won't take too long for disc golfers to get rounds in for its development. I felt like a kid at disneyland for the first time, i've never played anything like it, and its amazing to see something like this even available to us in disc format. Excited to see how many people were there, caught up with some of the usual locals from the community which is always good to see how much love there is for something like this. I can't wait to get back many times over!!! The ONLY reason I didn't give it a 5 star is because it needs time and love from YOU! Play it! Keep it clean! Be responsible! It's a 5 star resort that is just needs time and love which it will easily get. Do not take a place like this for granted, we are luckily to have this available to us. Big thank you to all putting the time to get this to where it is thus far.
