Open tossing in Rapid

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 1, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

+Nice Mach VII baskets. All were in good shape and caught well.
+Two practice baskets next to the parking lot.
+Big parking lot, will always have a place to park.
+Nice concrete tees on every hole that are all grippy enough and in good shape.
+Nice tee signs that give enough info to guide you around this course.
+A bit of elevation on some holes give this open course some interesting features.
+Ace runs available for most levels of players. Especially if the holes are in the shorter pin position.
+Two basket locations per hole. Course is open enough to easily determine which one it is currently in.
+Shouldn't lose a disc here. The creek, if running at all, is pretty shallow. Bridges provided to cross when necessary.
+Good place for newer players to learn the game without getting beat up too badly.

Cons:

-Super open course. Not much required for shot shaping. You can see the whole course from the parking lot. Most holes had 0, 1, or maybe 2 trees on or near it. They should plant some trees to plan for a more challenging course in the future.
-If it's windy, this course offers no protection.
-At least one tee sign was missing. Likely vandalism. Haven't played this course enough to know if it's a recurring theme or not. Rapid has some rough areas but this area seemed safe.
-There's a lot more park that could have been used. A few of the holes were pretty close to each other and others seemed more spread out.
-Not a ton of hole length variation, especially when more of the holes seemed to be in the short position. If the longs are used, this is probably better.

Other Thoughts:

-Overall fun factor was pretty low. Jackson is definitely the better option in Rapid and Spearfish and Custer are top notch courses if you are willing to drive to other areas of the Hills.
-Not worth the stop unless you are a course bagger, a newer player, or want to get some field practice in.
-Soccer fields and playground also in this park but don't interfere with disc golf at all.
-Played in the afternoon on a Thursday and didn't see anyone else here at all.

Pros:

New baskets, good landscaping, neat water feature that is not a hazard, both up and down hill throws.

Cons:

It can be very windy here and there is no shelter from it. Good luck.

Other Thoughts:

2 practice baskets and portapotties on site.

Better than the drink 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 25, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Good sized tee pads and basic signs at each hole. Navigation is not an issue on this course. - Multiple pin placements with Mach VII baskets. - There's a good mix of hole lengths and some slight elevation changes. - Hole 12 is a fun downhill bomb back towards the parking lot. - Plenty of ace runs to be found here. - No chance of losing a disc, so you can play through this course pretty quickly. - This is a fun course for beginners to learn on.

Cons:

- Safety issues with a few of the holes. Holes 1 and 2 play directly towards each other. We had to wait for the group ahead of us to play through hole 2 before we could tee off so that we didn't hit anyone. The basket for hole 11 was positioned around 20 ft from 9's teepad, which is also next to 12's tee. - The course is mostly wide open with a few scattered trees. - There isn't much challenge to be found here, except for when it's windy. There really isn't any shot shaping to these holes. Holes 2 and 9 in the long positions were the only two holes that had any technicality to them. - The course hadn't been mowed in quite awhile. Hopefully that isn't the normal case with the courses in Rapid City.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, this course is decent if you're looking for something beginner friendly. The course is less than a year old, as of this review, and is apparently supposed to continue to be improved upon. It's worth playing if you are in the area, but it isn't one I would go out of the way for. Without knowing how much of this land was available to use for the disc golf course, it left me feeling that there were some missed opportunities in the design of these holes.
