Challenging technical layout drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 23, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Two tees and two baskets per hole for four different layout combinations. Many holes have multiple fairways/lines to choose from.
- Requires distance control and ability to shape shots in both directions, doesn't favor a forehand player over a backhand player (or vice-versa)
- Easy navigation, course is well marked to get you to the next tee
- Located in area with plenty of amenities nearby (restaurants, gas stations, etc.)

Cons:

- #16 baskets and #17 white tee can be surrounded by water during rainy season.
- #18 is poor finishing hole for an otherwise great layout, would be better IMO if #18 was #10 and #17 was #18

Other Thoughts:

For the most part this is a great layout with an interesting mix of short and medium length holes that require you to hit tight lines and control your distance to keep the disc in the fairway. The smarter play on the par 4s is usually to leave the driver in the bag and play for position, although throwing controlled drives is possible if your flex shots are accurate. Bogey comes into play quickly if you are off many of these fairways.

With the exception of #16 Gold basket and #17 White tee being surrounded by water, the course is in great shape for one that is fairly new.

The first hole is at the far end of the parking lot near a large brown board that usually would contain a course map (but is empty at the moment). Better to park on the woods side of parking lot if parking near #1 because errant throws off 18 could hit cars on that side of parking lot.

There are a lot of little stumps throughout the course that can be stepped on if you don't look where you're walking. Several have been painted, others haven't.

Love Hate 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 7, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Dual Concrete Tees. Teepads were new and long enough that I didn't notice anything odd with them. They were all most flat to the ground as well which is always a plus.

- Discatcher baskets. Baskets are new and catch just as good as always.

- Teesigns are some of the best out there when it comes to information and look. The only downside is that they are just laminated paper. I could see these being upgraded in the future but they are pretty great for what they are.

- The course offers something for almost all skill levels. There are dual baskets and teepads ranging from something that should be adequate for rec players and for pro players.

- Navigation was pretty simple. Without the use UDisc I think I could navigate this course with very little issues. With UDisc, its a breeze.

- Decently wide fairways for a very wooded piece of land. This course is new and it shows. The fairways were cut wide enough for the most part and offer mostly fair play. There are also separate fairways on the same hole for different layouts. This can make things a bit confusing at times to figure out where to throw but isn't too much of an issue once you learn the course.

- A good mix of very short/easy holes and some difficult par 4's. There were a few par 3.5's that need to be worked thru a bit but for the most part the holes played pretty well.

Cons:

- The course can be a bit rough at times. Some of the fairways really didn't have fair line from some of the pin and tee combinations. While the course has dual tees and pins and they tried to do a good job of making the holes playable for any combination it seemed to me as though some tee and pin combos just shouldn't be played yet. I think that this issue could be resolved over time with more play but as it stands some of the combos are just not good.

- The rough is super rough. This is to be expected with a newer course. Hopefully since this course is on a college campus it will get a lot of play and that will trample down some of the rough but for now if you get off of the fairway, you're going to have a bad time.

Other Thoughts:

I have a love/hate for this course. Some of the holes to me were great and others were headscratchingly difficult. Difficult not because the hole was difficult but because the layout of the hole just didn't make sense. Maybe it's just me but I'm not a fan of a 300'ish hole that forces a layup off the tee in order to get a par 3. There were a few hole combos that this was the case for me. I think that over time this course is going to continue to get better and better with the more it gets played. Play this course if you are in the area but for now it's nothing that you have to travel out of the way to play. Its worth a play but not a must play.

Pros:

Variety.
Well laid out.
Lots of different situations.

Cons:

I play this in cold weather only.
This website wants me to be verbose, but the preceding sentence is all I've got to say on the Con side.

Other Thoughts:

Another tamed jungle by Hosfeld.
That's the long and short of it.

Another Lake County Course For Your Disc'n Pleasure! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 3, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Another Lake County Disc Golf Trail Course means another 2.5+ hour drive up from Punta Gorda to play it and chances are pretty good that it will be worth the trip! It was, of course. It has the standard two tee/two basket per hole set up as her sister courses and as she currently sits is probably the most technical of the bunch. Most of the course sits in a dense jungle-like forest and uses the abundant trees in interesting ways. There are a few open holes also to mix thigs up a little bit. This course is going to make you use your brain and really think about shot selection and execution. The courses' multiple ways to play make the course accessible to most skill levels and this course features some of the widest range of distances of any course. Rec folks and casuals will love the short ace runs from whites to reds and the pros will probably like the brutal challenge from long to longs (at least it seemed brutal to this old Grandmaster rec level player).

The course has nice concrete tees and informative tee signs and plenty of next tee arrows and signage to make navigation pretty good. The course is very rustic with plenty of wildlife to examine on your way through. The course is mostly isolated and very chill in spots.

Cons:

The course is new so it has those new course cons. Some of the distances on a few tee signs seemed off and a couple were missing and there might still be a tee pad that needed to be poured. There are a lot of trip vines and toe breaker stumps on the course and very rustic areas. I would recommend sturdy shoes and long pants, at least for a while. This is not a course that you would want to play barefoot. These are things that will get fixed as more work is done and the course gets broken in. The only real nag here is the longish walks between some holes but that can be excused if done to maximize the course and offer the best possible hole selection.

Other Thoughts:

The course is open and seeing a lot of play already. The 4 is based on what the course will become. It's already close and I am confident that the work will be done to finish this course off proper.

A big thank you to Lake Sumter State College for allowing the course to go in and a big thank you to Mr. Hosfeld for bringing such fine disc golf courses to the state of Florida. Well done sir!

LakeHawk designer notes 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 5, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Dual concrete tees (White & Blue) and dual DISCatcher 28s (Red & Gold/Yellow) on Lake Sumter State College campus, which is open to the public during daylight hours. Most of the course is carved out of a thick, 20 acre stand of oaks, pines, palms and Palmettos.
7 par 4s. The dual/dual set up caters to 4 different skill levels. White to Red is very forgiving, for beginners. Blue to Gold will challenge an advanced to Pro-level player.
A dozen of the holes start or finish near the parking lot, which allows someone to play a hole or two between classes and should be a bit safer by bringing players back toward the open parking lot.
Many holes have multiple fairways and disparate tee & pin positions for maximum variety.
Some oddly shaped tee pads, which accommodate diverse angles to both pins.
Plenty of directional arrows under select baskets and on 4"x4" posts for easier navigation. Well marked transition paths. Good flow. Some wooded areas are lined with logs to better define the fairways & transition paths for the player and the maintenance staff.
Mostly flat with good use of the little elevation changes there are.
Restrooms & water fountains in Math & Sciences building. (normally open, but currently closed due to Covid 19) Ample parking for players and spectators.
Friendly security staff.

Cons:

NEWLY installed! Still has some rough-edges. (Vines, sticks & stumps)
#11 tees are still rubber mats (GOOD rubber mats. But not concrete) as of 03-10-21.
Houses to the right (north) of fairways 14, 15 & 16 are in no danger of being hit, but signs may be placed to reduce noise on these holes.
Although holes 3, 4 & 16 are near water, it rarely comes into play for safety reasons.
An errant shot on #8 Blue to Gold stands a minor chance of going into a yard. But pretty unlikely.
Some stinging nettle can be found on #7 near tees.
Gopher tortoise burrows will be staked with ribbons. (Take casual relief!!)
No drinking water on the course. Mosquitoes can get bad. Chiggers & ticks have been found there as well.
No shaded parking near tees 1 and 10.
Practice basket not yet installed.
Longish walks from #3 to #4, 6-7, 8G-9W.

Other Thoughts:

Course #5 of 6 on the Lake County Disc Golf Trail, The LakeHawk disc golf course (par 61) was designed by World Champion Disc Golf Design, (AKA: 3x PDGA World Champion Gregg Hosfeld. Florida's only disc golf course Master Designer) and produced by the Florida Disc Golf Foundation and the Lake County Economic Development and Sports Tourism dept.
Several bird species, such as sand hill cranes, hawks & barred owls can be seen in and around the course. Areas where endangered sand skinks were found were left undisturbed.
The course has a good mix of shot-shaping and places a premium on accuracy and placement shots to landing zones on the par 4s.
This course has the potential to spoon-feed newbies and develop their game into collegiate contenders.
Absolutely worth the trip. Play ALL FOUR configurations!!
