Pros:
- They do the best with what they have. The land isn't amazing but they do an amazing job capitalizing on what they have.
- Great place to learn to play. The rough is bad, but most beginners can throw around it. Few people get demoralized playing this course because even a beginner can get a couple of pars.
- Great mix of shots. Forehand, backhand, hyzer, anhyzer are likely all neccesary to get a birdie on each hole.
- Several greens (3, 7, 10, 15, 17) present challenges in slope, obstacles, etc. Fun challenge.
- Couple of prime "ace-able" holes
- I like that 1 and 5 teepads connect. 12 and 15 teepads connect as well. I normally will play 1- 4 as a warmup before beginning a round.
- I can play it in 45 minutes at a casual pace.
- For more advanced players, there is a rogue gold layout out there. It's not a real layout, but if you know the course it is pretty easy to navigate.
Cons:
- As all have said, the rough really is terrible. Perfect to play in the winter when they mow it down, but just awful in the summer.
- Many thorns to be found in the weeds, woods.
- The teepad on 10 makes me mad everytime (uneven, slightly raised raised 3' x 4' teepad), along with a couple of uneven teepads.
- It's pretty easy. I am relatively new to the game, and threw an -8 one day (mind you it was the best round I've ever had).
- Small complaint, but 1 and 2 all have an OB road/parking lot behind them (roughly 275 away from the tee). Easy to overthrow on your first couple of holes. May need to wait for traffic.
Other Thoughts:
For what it is, it's an awesome course. It's no championship or even challenging course, but the name of the game for beginners is to see how close to par you can throw, and for intermediates and advanced players is to see how many birdies you can rack up. If you take it for what it is, I love the course. Also, I know someone who has talked to apartment manager about people playing. They have no issue with it, and he was very welcoming. There are no current rules in place that it is only for Lakeside residents and guests.
