Re-design is better than the original 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 27, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

+Some of the best signage that I have seen. It shows any hazzards, both tees, baskets, and anything else that will help a player know exactly what they are looking at.
+Dual tees on a number of holes. Every hole that has two tees has a big difference between the two.
+Two basket locations on 13 of 20 holes.
+Elevation! The new layout uses Larson Hill even better than the old one. 9 holes have pretty significant ups and downs. The holes are different lengths with different angles of approach so the hill holes don't feel repetitive.
+Nice concrete pads. All new and in good shape.
+A good amount of trees. Some holes are more open than others but no holes have no obstacles. A few of the new holes are true woods holes.
+Solid distances here. The short tees still average 275 and the longs are over 300. Most of the shorter holes have either pretty tight lines or other hazzards to make them more interesting.
+A few ace runs here but if you do miss the ace, you might be headed OB or at least far from the hole.
+The course is very easy to follow. I was worried about that as someone who played the old layout hundreds of times.
+This isn't an easy course to lose a disc on but it can happen. The downhill pond hole is a possibility and some of the big pine trees can hide a disc too.
+Between the different pads and basket positions, this course should challenge and entertain most disc golfers.

Cons:

-The walking path can get close to the course at times. They did put caution signs on the main hole signage if you were to be throwing near the walking path. This walking path isn't too busy so this shouldn't be a big issue.
-Can be windy here, especially on the hill.
-Sometimes you don't know which pin position is in and that can be frustrating. Many holes you can tell right away but not always.
-Some of the alt tees are carved into the walking path.

Other Thoughts:

+I lived in Brookings for 4 years and played a lot of disc golf at Larson park. I was worried when I saw that it was redesigned. However, the designer did a great job. The course needed some new signs, different pin positions due to erosion control, and maybe some more challenge. I liked the new layout a lot.
+Some of the holes are similar but with another tee and/or another basket position, the course is only more challenging and interesting.
+Best holes: 5,7,8,11,17
-5: downhill hole that plays fast with a protected green and OB path
-7 is a downhill beast. Short pin position is 2-able but the long makes you throw around the pond unless you're a big arm.
-8 is long and uphill which makes it play longer. I was happy to come away with a 3.
-11 plays downhill with a big curve. A blind ace opportunity but a fast green.
-17 is a long hole with a tree line right in the middle. If you get stopped, it's a hard par.

+This course is right up there with some of the Black Hills courses as the best in the state. Definitely the best on the E side of SD. I would say that the gold/design quality is higher than the courses on the west but it's hard to beat the scenery of Spearfish Canyon and Pageant Hill.
+This course is a must play. I really like the redesign a lot more than the old course and I was a fan of that one.
