Pros:
18 holes, concrete tees and baskets are as fresh as can be. Mostly short and open, with a couple of longer outliers. It is slated as a par 59, and that leaves a lot of room to go way under par for the experienced players. This course is probably better left to the novice disc golfers and kids.
The most difficult holes are 6 and 12. 6 has a hill just in front of the tee, making it a blind drive. The road next to the observatory to the right and is OB, as are the walking path on the left and the parking lot behind the target. 12 is a sharp dogleg left, with thick woods taking away any shots on the left side. To get it next to the basket on the drive will require a majestic hook. As a par 4 it is still a pretty easy birdie if you don't get caught up in the cluster of brush and limbs. Just stay right.
15 is short hole, but there isn't a lot of room for error in placement of the tee shot. The road is OB to the right, and there is a ravine behind with a line of trees to that cuts behind the basket and to the left side. The ground slopes toward the ravine, so it can be easy to slide off.
Cons:
Very easy layout will not challenge a serious disc golfer. The holes are very wide open, and usually there is a direct line to the pin. Maybe one or two trees will stand in a fairway occasionally. Two or three discs may be enough to do the job here.
The tee pads are small, and some are not square with the direction of the fairway. Many shots can be made with a set stance or short run up, but the long ones need to start a couple steps behind the tee. At times there will be more than one basket in sight. With no map available, I was left unsure which one to aim for once or twice. They are numbered, so it will become apparent if you head the wrong way eventually. The tee signs in the media link are nice, but they have yet to be installed on the course if they're in the works.
Other Thoughts:
I would like to have seen the woods that surround the grass utilized more, to provide more resistance. There looks to be quite a bit of wooded land that with some hilly terrain and a pond. With some clearing there may be enough space to put in at least 9 holes for the more advanced disc golfers.
I played a 7 under round first time around. The only bogey came on the last hole, but some of the par 4 holes really feel like a bogey if you don't make it in 3.
I hadn't played a new course in 2021, so as soon as the freezing weather broke I drove to Louisburg to give this new track a run. I wasn't expecting much, sunshine and 50 degree weather made anything seem great after weeks of miserable cold weather. I wouldn't go out of the way to play this one, but it is cool to have if you are from the area.
The park also has an observatory that is open to the public on Saturdays from late spring to fall. I might return to see what that is all about one of these days, and try a night round if I am feeling frisky.
