the GOOD course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 23, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Since I rate on safety, fun, and challenge (in that order), I had to go a little high amongst the nine holers I've played. The 'Woods' course in Batesville exists on its own, secluded plot of land (a paved walking trail is the only adjacent park activity), and only has two spots where I had any concern about crossing fairway potential (see cons).

This course was totally enjoyable for me, a middling, aging, approach-game disc golfer. It opened with an obvious downslope gliding putter/mid shot with a mid-fairway tree or two to define your lane, and finished in a pocket across a small rill/creek bridge. Sweet! Then hole 2 is as much of as 'top of the world' shot as could be found in this little parcel, again aceable if you hit that clean line. Sweeter! It then winds along the creek on 3, longer downslope on 4 (into the trees), floated a quirky anny Comet shot on 5, and had a reachable and uniquely pedestalled uphiller on 6. I was thinking how much I'd like to share the experience with my disc golfing buddy. Even the back-and-forth nature of the finishing three holes was fun because I could easily reach all of them.
Overall, the course isn't here to challenge the advanced to open player, but is a unique and well-designed set of challenges for the recreational level player. It was difficult to rate (I wanted to go a little higher on my score…)

Cons:

…but it's true, the mixed tees need to be finalized, and the replay factor would only stay high with alternate tees (and I'm not really sure there's enough room in the land for that. Furthermore, they did HAVE to put up a (nice) billboard sign advertising the course on hole 4, because the left side of the fairway very easily crashes through the 3rd green. And the funky sweeping left to right hillside fairway on 5 is obvious, but there will be guys who'll seek the line straight over the 4th basket to get there, whether they make it a mando or not.

Other Thoughts:

First, if you're from out of town, the directions using Coonhunters Road off SR46 won't be obvious. Turn at the light for Pearl Street and veer left. THEN you'll be on the right road.

Next, the course is clearly the "Getty Community Disc Course", since that's what the billboard on hole 4 says. However, like most places, it'll probably be called by some other name, like Liberty Woods, or even "that GOOD course in Batesville".

Finally, I did add a schematic map for first timers. Hope it's not too far off.

Brand New 9 Hole Wooded Course

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 6, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Updated on 1/4/24 due to teepads being added to the entire course. They are on the small side, but the course is short so that's not really an issue. Also, most of the rough has broken in due to play. Hole 3 seems to have 2 pin positions, I prefer the one to the left, but it can potentially interfere with the teeshot of 4.

This course was just put in about a month ago so I can only reflect on what I currently have, but I think time will continue to improve it. You'll notice this course is shown on the map as basically on top of another 9 hole course. Liberty Woods is the new course, played through a wooded area around 700 yards from hole 9 of Liberty Park. If you intend to play both I'd recommend driving between the 2. Liberty Woods is in an underdeveloped section of the park which means there are no pedestrians, which is certainly nice when comparing the 2 courses.
-Property is disc golf specific
-Course makes good use of woods and elevation
-Nice Discatcher baskets
-Temporary signage directing to the next hole
-Hole 2 is really nice, a 230' shot down into a glen with a small creek and a few troublesome trees
-Hole 6 is likely the other one most will remember, a steep uphill 135' ace run to a really well designed elevated basket. One of the nicer looking elevated pins I've seen.
-Portable Toilet between basket 9 and teepad 1
-Park district continues to improve the property. While I was there a parks employee was hacking away at the rough (he told me this course got him to start throwing too)

Cons:

-The glaring current issue is no teepads. I would easily give this a 3.0 if there were teepads installed, but for now the natural turf is rough and uneven.
-The tee signs are just a simple number, no map or distance at this time
-The rough is still pretty bad. As this course is new there hasn't been much "breaking in" so far so there were several thorny areas.
-Everything is pretty short. The longest hole is 300' and most are around the 230' range. The woods make you think about the shot, but bad shots are generally easy to recover from.
-Hole 5 was squeezed in. It wasn't terrible, but it felt a little forced. A hard right turning dogleg at only 135', it was definitely a transition hole.
-Holes 7-9 throw back in forth across a 250' clearing. The basket placement for 7 keeps it interesting (right in front of a small creek perched on a slight embankment) but 8 and 9 are nearly identical shots in opposite directions.

Other Thoughts:

All in all, this is a nice course to have in the area and a huge improvement over its sister course, Liberty Park. It's only 5 minutes from the highway and can be played in about 30 minutes max on a solo round so if you are going by or area a course collector it's certainly worth your time. Locals will find it to be a great introduction to woods golf without offering too big of a risk.
I will likely revisit this review in the next year if teepads and signs are added as this could certainly rank higher. As for now it's a good course layout with plenty of room to improve.
