Do the Monster Mash drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 22, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

There are many. The course is very well designed and has intuitive flow (mostly). The plot of land is gorgeous with stunning views of the ridge line. Each hole has multiple baskets, poured concrete tees, great tee signs, and next tee arrows on the baskets. The are 2 different bathroom locations and even a water fountain. The Park is well funded with plenty of parking (multiple lots), tennis courts, basketball, volleyball, and 3 baseball diamonds. The park/course are both gems and only a 5 minute drive from I-81.

Cons:

Not many, but I'll reach anyway. There was one basket that was too close to a low barbed wire fence for my liking. Your disc could be 5 feet on the other side and it's gonna be a challenge to get it back. Tee signs on 5, 7, and 12 show 'ponds' but only 7 has actual water. Maybe the other 2 get water when it's really wet. They looked like fake OB (faux-b) to me and on 12, it punishes great drives. In general, there are no significant cons on this course.

Other Thoughts:

So my buddy sold me Limestone Ledges as "54 holes, 3 courses!". Well.... almost. It's not 3 distinct courses like Codorus or Druid Hill. It's got two primary courses - Upper Meadows and Lower Forest. For the Monster, you are essentially playing Safari golf across the 2 primary courses. The Monster course doesn't have it's own fairways - it shares the same fairways with holes from the other 2 courses. Many of the holes are just 2 combined holes from either of the other courses (see pics of the Tee signs). Notice I didn't put this fact in the "Cons". While it does share all the fairways, each Monster course hole has it's own unique basket locations and they are marked with a big flag that says MM on it. These can also be used as a 3rd basket position when playing the UM or LF courses. The Monster flows intuitively - the only place we got stuck was between 5 and 6. It a 500' walk between the parking lot and 2 baseball diamonds. You do pass the bathrooms, so this walk has value.

This park is gorgeous, and today's July weather was perfect. Meanwhile, the Park and the course were empty. Empty! Now, if there are a lot of people on the UM or LF courses, then it's possible playing the MM would create conflicts. You are sharing fairways on virtually every hole. But with this course practically empty on a gorgeous summer day, this doesn't appear to be a common problem (yet). It might be soon as word gets out about how great this place is.

I didn't like the fake lake on 5. It was bone dry when I played but maybe it gets moist after heavy rain. The Zombie pond on #7 was a genuine challenge, with actual water! The other fake lake on #12... I guess it probably gets some water in the very middle. It was dry today and the over-compensated large perimeter of OB flags seemed unfair. My buddy had a great drive and yet still went just OB in an area that clearly doesn't get wet. It felt like "manufactured OB" penalized a really good drive.

The Monster is long and borderline grueling. If you play it first, it's gonna affect how you play the other courses. If you're old and have a noodle arm like me, it's gonna kick your ass. It certainly kicked mine.

I think Ledges rates high enough to call it a "Destination" spot. Its close proximity to I-81 make the destination so easy. If you were on I-81, you'd be foolish to drive by this course and not stop to play any 1 of the 3 courses. I didn't play Lower Forest, but it appears to be a quick and easy play if you're on limited time. I can't wait to go back for another ass whoopin' on the Monster.
