Decent 10 Hole Course About 6 KM From Tallinn City Center! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 10, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

The Maarjamae DiscGolf Park is about a 12 Euro cab ride or a 2 Euro bus fare back from the Tallinn city center. I was here on a tour of the Baltic's and Russia and thus had a free evening to check out one of Estonia's disc golf courses. Due to time constraints, I chose Maarjamae simply because it is a 10 hole course.

First Thing. Locating the course. The course address is Purde 31 D. The last house on Purde Street is 30. There is a paved walking/bicycle path heading into the woods here. Follow it for about 100 meters and you'll be at the course.

The park is not as well maintained as most of the parks in this part of the world. Maarjamae is somewhere between a park and a vacant lot with scattered trees, grassy areas and paths leading everywhere. At the beginning is a basic course map as well as a blue and white practice basket. The baskets say Pirita on the side. I don't know if this is a brand name or something else. I'm a little rusty on my Estonian. The tee pads are 5' x 5' carpet pads which are more than adequate for this course. Each Pirita basket has the hole # as well as a next arrow pointing your in the general direction of the next tee. The course is basically flat.

Hole lengths range from roughly 170' to # 5 at about 380'. I'd say this is an easy recreational course. Most of the holes are pretty straight forward requiring either a straight drive or an easy hyser. # 6 is about 160' but the locals have turned it into an island hole by painting a red circle around the hole complete with a drop zone. Any disc landing outside the red circle is deemed to have landed in the water. I only found out about this because there was a group of four locals practicing here who explained it to me. The following hole is a fun little anhyser 160' throw around a big bush. # 8 then plays back to a basket in a more undeveloped area. 9 and 10 then play back towards the beginning.

Cons:

Finding the course is a little tricky. Just walk up the paved path a short distance.

A couple of holes have you backtracking especially # 1.

The # 2 sign is missing.

The 5' x 5' carpet teepads aren't great but they work just fine here.

I think the course map has been spray painted a little.

And don't completely trust the next tee arrows on the basket. After playing # 3, following the arrow led me on a long walk through some nettle filled paths only to discover that the # 4 tee pad was way back near the # 3 basket.

There were some really annoying flies that refused to leave me alone. They constantly buzzed around my ears and we're forever landing on my face.

Recreational distances and challenges.

Other Thoughts:

No matter what the course is like, just playing a course in Tallinn, Estonia is pretty cool. Just consider that this country was under the oppressed rule of the Soviet Union just over 25 years ago. You couldn't have even thought about traveling here then. Even now, I wonder if the KGB is alive and well here.

The course is probably a 2 by US standards. However, when the exotic location bonus formula is factored in, I can generously award ole Maarjamae DiscGolf Park a 2.5
