Nice little 9er

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 6, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Literally just played this one because I ended my work day very close by and didn't have daylight for 18 holes.

It's the type of little 9 hole beginner friendly course I feel like every small town should have that players could get started at or just to unwind at the end of a day.

The first could have holes are standard short park holes, and the you cross the road and have some interesting little wooded holes and a few little ace runs that can add some spice at the end. Especially since there is reachable OB on most of them.

Signs are decent and they do have tee pads, even though they are rubber mats.

Baskets are Disccatchers and are great.

I played in 20 mins and I'm a slow mover.

Cons:

It's just a basic little course with all sub 250 holes and though there are some fun holes it's not a stunner.

The starting holes are a little Mickey Mouse and I'm not a fan of any hole under 150, and this one has a 120 downhill jump putt of a hole.

I hate throw mats and will never be a fan of them after busting it in many early in my career.

Hole 3 is currently pulled for construction.

Other Thoughts:

It's a fun little course and if I was teaching someone I'd hand them an Iguana and we would roll. It's got a ton of merit but isn't a destination in any way.

Might hit it again if I'm close but only if time is tight.

New, fun, Family/beginner course done very well! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 17, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice, brand new DISCatchers.
Rubber tee mats with small, minimal tee signs. Since you can see every basket from the tee, you don't really need a hole map.
Plays through small City park that contains the pool, a playground and picnic shelters. This was obviously planned as a short, beginner/family course, and they accomplished that.
Starts with a couple of flat holes, then has elevation change on the rest of the holes, great variety in that.
Low chance of disc loss, even with a creek in play on four holes.

Cons:

Tee mats appear to be just laid on the ground, they could become uneven and an issue soon.
#9 doesn't finish too close to #1. Just a short walk in the park to get back!
If you go long on #9, you could lose a disc there.
All holes are short, averaging 190', might not appeal to some, but they are just right for this course.

Other Thoughts:

Brand new course, outfitted with brand new DISCatchers in this small city park. They were so proud of this course, the city even had a sign made announcing the course (see my post in the "Post a Cool Disc Golf Pic" thread, #4193). And they should be, nice entry level course surrounding the decades old public pool that is probably real popular on hot summer days.

Every hole was fun to play and will hopefully recruit some new players to the game. All short holes, a variety of directions and elevations make every hole interesting. I normally don't go through a description of every hole, but all of these were fun to play, I liked the first two holes, flat with just a couple of trees on each to shape your shot. Cross that park road and #3 is an awesome ace run, downhill beside a steep hillside, pretty much blind from the tee. If you take a couple of steps to the left, you can spot the basket. After that, you head into the woods and I was thinking, uh-oh, here comes the overgrown wooded mess!! Boy was I wrong, nice path to the tee, same rubber mat, then a plenty wide fairway, turning right and downhill, covered with mulch through the wooded area, nice work P&R! Then #5 is a another downhill ace run, somewhat guarded, with the creek lurking behind, #6 crosses the creek, uphill and to the right. Step up to a quiet cul-de-sac to tee for #7, a very short downhill putter shot, a little too close to that basket is the tee for #8, uphill to a small level area along side a short residential street. For the finale, the tee is elevated, then down through a couple of large, old growth trees to the basket near the creek and in front of a pretty stone look bridge.

Really no parking lot for the park, just spots on the street that borders the park. If I were to make a change to the course, it would have #9 finish closer to #1. My best suggestion would be to eliminate current #8, then have new #8 tee move away from #7 basket a little (or move it up on the hill) and then go along the creek to the current #9 basket. Then, walk across the bridge, just past the shelter and make new #9 a short uphill to a fast green near the playground fence. It would be about 150' uphill, on an angle away from the park road.

I like a course that fits so well into the mold it was designed for, so I'm bumping my rating up .5 for that task well done.

Fun, scenic pitch-n-putt layout

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 30, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Every small town seemingly has its own Memorial Park. Every small town nine-hole disc golf course seemingly has the same generic layout. So, color me surprised when this course turned out to be a fun, scenic short course.
- Don't let the course's first impression, or second or third, fool you. The first two holes immediately feel like fillers - throw one direction across a field, turn around and throw straight back where you started. This after you've got a long walk (relatively) from the parking lot to the first hole. Trust me, it gets better.
- The final six hole are a fantastic, scenic, ace-run stroll through the park. You're throwing putter, mid-range, or approach discs on every hole, but you're in for a treat.
- #4 is an excellent, dogleg right shot. Between #3 & 4, these are the only two holes that require some skill/challenge to get close to the basket.
- #5 is a downhill, 181-foot ace run. Don't land in the creek behind the basket. You'll want to throw a second disc here.
- #7 is a downhill, 112-foot lag putt shot. If you've never aced a hole, grab 5 discs and throw. Give it a little time, and you should nail one before too long. I don't believe in par 2s, but this is a par 2 if I've seen one. A 3 is a lost stroke.
- #9 is the signature layout. 226 feet downhill, slight dogleg left. Small creek to the right of the basket. Large, exquisite stone bridge behind the basket. If you throw long and slam into the bridge wall, you're still in putting range.
- Starting at hole #3, every hole should give you pause to want to throw a second disc for fun.
- Course tilts completely to fun on the fun vs challenge scale. As such, this is the perfect course for beginners and/or kids.
- Extremely short course - nine holes total just under 1,700 feet, average 188 feet per hole.
- Excellent for a quick play. The slowest part of your round is the long transition from the start of the course to the end, and the walk that ensues to your vehicle. It's an approx. 800-foot walk. It only seems excessive when it's half the length of the entire course.

Cons:

The cons are holes #1 & 2 and how out of place they feel. They're isolated from the rest of the course. #1's basket is essentially in someone's backyard. And they're boring holes. Seeing the wooded area behind #4 & 6, I'd rather have a couple more holes there.
- Navigation could be better. I only did find hole #1 by back tracking on the course. Again, baskets #4 - 9 are all close together. The other three are somewhere else. A couple of signs/markers is all that's needed.
- Park maintenance could be better. Trash accumulating in parts.
- Course has areas that will get extremely muddy after rains.
- Not a lot of challenge. Experienced players can do well here carrying just two discs for their rounds.
- If the course is ever crowded, you will need to keep an eye out for flying discs on other holes. Overall, course seems that it's mostly isolated from the rest of the park. The only other amenities are the public swimming pool and several picnic shelters.

Other Thoughts:

Memorial Park is an excellent course in terms of its intended goal of being a short, family-friendly design. Call me surprised that I really liked a pitch-n-putt, sub-1,700 foot course, especially considering how flat it starts.
- If I lived nearby, this the type of course you'd want to practice or play a lot. You could just loop through holes #4 - 9 searching for a cubby ace. You can make a good safari layout or use the different baskets for practice shots. With the slopes and baskets at different elevations, you can get a healthy variety of looks and feels.
- This is an ace-race tourney course. With more open space throughout the park, bring in 9 temporary baskets, and you can make a fun ace-race layout.
- The course comes very close to hitting its target. Holes #1 & 2 stick out like a sore thumb for being out of place, both figuratively and literally. It's probably unavoidable to have these two holes, but I do believe there are better options than these.
- Overlook the simple design of holes #1 - 3. Enjoy the layouts and scenery of holes #4 - 9. If I were rating solely on fun factor, the course would get a much higher mark than this.
