Subjugating Expectations 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 28, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Parking right at hole 1
- Tees signs are all there/intact, 5 & 14's signs are faded, but legible
- Course map at hole 1, Includes each tee sign across the bottom
- Baskets all in good shape
- Practice basket beside hole 1
- Hole 1 has a sign telling you if the course is currently set to yellow or blue pin positions
- Holes 9 and 18 end near hole 1, making half rounds convenient
- Nice spacing between holes, no real danger of being domed by other players
- Shot diversity is very high
- Fairways are very well maintained
- This course is absolutely gorgeous
- No, I'm serious, this course simply oozes natural beauty from every hole it has
- Good elevation change
- Despite how clean and open everything feels, there is still technicality to this course
- Excellent variety of hole distances
- The flow of this course is quite nice, and I only had to consult the course map twice (10 & 18)
- This is just a flat out fun course. I've not the words to describe how or why, it just is.
- Personal bias, but hole 18 is perfect. Downhill open field fit for emptying your bag...
- Some holes had incorrect par info, fixed that
- Perhaps an unorthodox "Pro", but I've never seen such a level of respect for the game by non players. Several groups of non-DGers: dog walkers, kid walkers, old couples, etc were meandering around, and ALL of them looked to the tees for us, and if they were heading in our way, they turned a different direction. I'm adding .5 to the rating for this alone and you can't stop me.

Cons:

- All tee pads after hole 1 are dirt. Use of golf course red/white markers are cute, but still
- No restrooms nor trashcans
- Despite the fact it hadn't rained for 4 days prior, quite a few holes were fairly marshy
- Several tee pads were borderline unusable due to that
- Couple trees down across the course have been there long enough to know they'll remain there
- Quite a few holes use waist high grass as the 'rough'
- Several holes are blind without much indication where you're actually supposed to throw
- Speaking of, some tee signs are just wrong.
- I.E. Look at hole 3's sign. Sign says curve right (yellow pin), pin is actually dead straight.
- I.E. See Hole 5's sign, just left of center. Wrong, it's a 50° spike hyzer hole
- Obtuse walk from 9's pin to 10's tee
- Obtuse walk from 17's pin to 18's tee
- Hole 16 is a blind throw, but you can see 7's basket from tee. Don't get confused
- Course is pretty easy. First time playing, strong (16mph, 26mph gust) winds, and my usual 5 or so missed 20' putts, and I still finished +3.

Other Thoughts:

- Yes this course is easy.
- Yes it's in the middle of nowhere.
- Yes it lacks some basic course infrastructure.
- Should you skip it? Hell no.
- I know I'm just some random schmuck on the internet, but, from a non-local, if you have the chance, play this course. It's a relaxing treat
- This course is 2 hours from me. I'm making the drive just for this course again as often as I can

Fun Fact: Found a cracked DX Wraith inked "I CAN MAKE IT ON MY OWN". Homestar Runner ref, so I threw... okay.. shanked it. +10 points to Gryffindor if you find it

A serene surprise 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 24, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

When I've got disc golf on the brain, and I'm road tripping around the country, sometimes my mind wanders, and I start looking at the surrounding scenery, and I find some wonderful park or vista, and imagine how cool that spot would be for a disc golf course. Well, I was traveling from Northwest Arkansas to Texarkana through some absolutely beautiful parts of Ouchita National Forest, and I kept having that feeling that every place I saw along the way would make a wonderful disc golf course. Just as I was thinking that, all of a sudden, on a hill on the side of the road, a basket appeared! That was how I first stumbled upon the existence of the Lion's Club course, and immediately added it to my wish list on DGCR. On my next trip through, I decided to stop in and give the course a try. And I was thoroughly impressed!
Pro's:
The biggest pro of this course is that it is absolutely gorgeous. Seriously, if you are like me and enjoy disc golf because you get to travel to beautiful parks and landscapes across this great land and convene with nature, this course is for you. The Lions have made fantastic use of this property. The rolling hills and tall trees make for some lovely vistas.
Great variety of shots required. Lots of variation in distance, elevation change, open vs wooded, and right/left. The course begins with a series of pretty short 180-250 ft range holes. The back 9 really opens up with some longer shots.
Good use of mando trees to create some tricky shots.
Baskets in good condition
Sign right as you arrive in the park.
Each hole has a well-marked sign
Moderately challenging, especially for beginner/intermediate players. I actually think this course offers a lot to players of all skill levels.
Not really a ton of opportunities for discs to get lost. Plenty of trees, but not a ton of brush in most places. Exceptions, I think are holes 10-11, where there is a bit of bramble you could get caught up in, and an OB pond.

Cons:

This course is not without its minor annoyances.
I didn't see a sign for hole 1 (just the course map) so it was a bit hard to tell that the first teepad was for 1.
Lots of holes you had to walk pretty far ahead to put your eyes on the basket.
Not the most intuitive walking layout. There's a big gap between hole 9 and 10, and you have to cross over the fairway back by the club house to get to 10's tee.
A few holes (I'm thinking 4 & 12, and 6 & 16?) shared fairways, and if you're not paying attention to which basket is which, you might end up shooting for the wrong basket.
Only hole 1 has a concrete teepad, the rest are marked off natural pads. The white teepad markers (long) were pretty easy to find.
The only other person who was there when I was there was an older gentleman out working on the landscaping. I struck up a conversation with him, and he told me that it had recently gotten very wet and washed over many of the red teepad markers.
I saw that the course is advertised as very cart friendly. I would modify that to say that the court is moderately cart friendly. I used my backpack cart and got through the round fine, but there was definitely some rough terrain and lots of elevation change, so be prepared to do some serious hauling and have your cart fall over at least once.

Other Thoughts:

If you're ever passing through this part of Arkansas, don't hesitate to stop at this course. Something for all skill levels to love. Really fantastic use of this gorgeous property. This is a beautiful course and I am definitely going to play it again next time I am through the area.

Pros:

Great layout of the old golf course.
A lot of elevation changes
This is exclusively a disc golf course.
You'll need all the disc in your bag

Cons:

The only cons I have is that the course could use a little more grooming, mowing of the fairways etc.
The walk from 17 to 18 is confusing ( 18 tee pad is on top the hill in the middle of the fairway)
No concrete pads yet, even though they have a donation box under the course map.So they are wanting to build on.

Other Thoughts:

I was really impressed by this course, especially it being in a town of only 5,000 people. its beautiful, secluded, and very challenging. cant wait to visit my family up there again to play.

Pleasantly surprised 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 24, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Big & open, plenty of variety, well maintained, nice elevation changes throughout the course.

Cons:

Tee Box on #1 is the only concrete tee box, everything else on the course is marked by either red or white metal squares.

Too many Alternate Pin placements.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course, I wish it were my home course. The biggest recommendation I have is to take the alternate pin placements out and add concrete tee pads at every hole. Overall, not what I expected to find in Southwest Arkansas.
