Flat Jaunt in the Hills

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 5, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

A course clearly designed for novices and better executed than most of its kind - but on the low end for a DiscGolfPark design.

-Amenities: Standard DGP amenities but on the shabby side. Concrete and turf pads, but slightly uneven and with some turf ripping. DGP baskets, but not the best-catching that I've played on. No issue with tee signs containing maps, distances, and pars. One practice basket. Holes form one loop of 9.

-Ambience: This course feels pretty secluded for a place in southern California. There is a decently busy highway running past the course, but you have nice views of foothills, train tracks with plenty of choo-choos, and nearby snowy peaks during the winter months. Some wildlife-dedicated area is adjacent as well.

-Novice-Friendly: Holes are all under 250'. White-level and higher players should easily birdie a slew of them. Also, only one hole has really bad trouble, so newer players won't get beat down.

-Shot Shaping/Gameplay: Decently interesting for the length, if not thrilling. The course is mostly open, which limits the amount of true shaping, but there are still 1-3 bushy trees to contend with on most holes. A novice could learn basic shapes, loosely taught with a large margin for error. I approached it as an ace race and was sorely disappointed by my failure to come anywhere close in nine tries.

Cons:

Short, open, and a bit untidy.

-Gameplay Limitations: Another course in the long legacy of novice-friendly locations that don't offer much for more advanced players. Bring a forehand and backhand putter and many players will be set. As I mentioned at the outset, this is better than many novice courses I've played, but it's not a brilliant example with elevation or shot-shaping.

-Flat: Despite the surrounding rolling hills, this park is flat. As in 0' of elevation change. If you wanted to teach your grandparents disc golf, this would be a pretty safe place to bring them.

-Maintenance: Tee pads are beginning to form lumps and lose turf. Tee signs have graffiti. Gopher holes proliferate and don't appear to be treated.

-Wildlife? Some pretty sternly-worded signs indicated dangerous wildlife can show up thanks to the untouched land next door. I wouldn't play here at twilight.

Other Thoughts:

Nicklaus is in the upper half of courses with holes entirely under 250'. However, I confess that its title of DiscGolfPark had me hoping for more - maybe a RenSke-style short shaping course. Hopefully it gets a little maintenance attention in the next few years to clean up the signs and pads; if so, it will remain a Reasonable place to stop for a short and easy round.

A Fine Example Of A Disc Golf Park Project! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 28, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

The Nicklaus Disc Golf Park is currently kind of a field project with lots of young trees having been planted. Come back in five or ten or twenty years and this course will be a whole lot different as these trees grow into adulthood.

The course has a lovely course sign and map. There is a practice basket near. There are a few benches scattered about and an interesting round basketball court. A large dog park is the neighbor on one side. The tee pads are carpet laid over a crushed rock. One of these carpets is already flipped over. The baskets are the official Disc Golf Park models. They're great. The tee signs are a small metal with the usual information. I like these signs because they would be really difficult to vandalize.

The course is listed as a pitch and putt, however, I would classify it as an easy recreational course. The difference you ask? In my tiny brain, I see a recreational course as just a little more challenging than a pitch and putt. Heck, when the trees mature, this might be an advanced course!

The practice basket is about 37' away from the # 9 basket. I'm kind of disappointed with the salesmen at Disc Golf Parks, Inc. I think they sold some park's and recreation bureaucrat a bill of goods about the need for a practice basket at a pitch and putt course. I doubt if this course will ever get so crowded that players couldn't get their mandatory putting practice in on # 9.

Cons:

Little challenge. Most baskets under 200'.

Small trees aren't yet a factor.

Kind of an out of the location. This course won't get the neighborhood walkers or bike riders.

Other Thoughts:

I love the idea of these little pitch and putt or rec courses or whatever you choose to call them however, I think they are probably better received when placed in a small park in a community setting. I don't think this course will ever get the traffic that it merits due to the location. It's a little boring now but will get better and more interesting with each passing year. Try it now or put it on your wish list for Match of 2025

Great Short Course in Quiet Area 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 8, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

The park was very quiet and relaxing. As the trees grow in, this short course will get even more fun. There's plenty of parking, water fountain, and a practice basket.

The pads and baskets are top notch! This course was designed by Austin Montgomery who's a DiscGolfPark guy and pro. The signs are pretty clear and easy to follow.

This course is ideal for practicing your short game and putting, or for introducing new or younger players to disc golf. Alternatively, when you have the course to yourself you can play some longer holes, nothing technical, just a little longer to open up.

Very easy to find from freeway.

Cons:

Low challenge for experience players. If you're playing competitively this is going to be easy, it's a true beginner/putter/upshot course that may not be enjoyable for some players.

There's no shade or cover so I can see the heat being an issue in summer.

No restroom.

Other Thoughts:

The surrounding communities seem to be in construction currently, I'd imagine the course will be a great introduction for a lot of future players.

It's not really worth a stop if you're looking for a competitive round. If you're looking for a jump-putt/upshot course to work on that short game, this is definitely a good place.

Great practice course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 24, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

The signs were great. Newer baskets that had arrows welded to bottom showing the location on the next basket. Great place to practice with your putters and midrange discs.

Cons:

Only 9 holes.

Other Thoughts:

The course will be more challenging when the trees get bigger

Expectation Exceeded 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 19, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- It was built utilizing the DiscGolfPark(R) brand to ensure a complete 9 hole course. All baskets and tee pads are there.
- Signage is readable, including one about wildlife that features three distinct animals found in Southern California. All tee posts are there.
- The trees add difficulty to the flat plane of the course.
- It feels like a NATURAL "golf course". Especially Hole 2. I love Hole 2.

Cons:

- Short fairways. Not a course if you feel like tossing bombs.
- There are a lot of docile bees. This would not be a good place to play if you have a allergy to bee stings.

Other Thoughts:

NEITHER PRO / CON

- A train track is next to the course. I think it is unique to be able to play next to a chugging train. Even though I stopped and watched the train, I think that sticks as a personality aspect of the course.

Quiet Location Great Practice Park 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 10, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Top Notch Equipment
This is a DiscGolfPark course. As such, it has top of the line everything. There is a practice target and course map and information sign by the first tee. Every single tee has a tee sign with full color graphics and complete information. The tees are completely developed turf tees. And it has championship targets.

Whole disc golf course to yourself
Secluded grassy park located only 4 miles off the I-10 freeway. Great course for folks that want to play disc golf without anyone else around for miles. I played on a Saturday morning and only saw one lady over at the completely separate dog park. This is a brand new park they installed on a little strip of land next to the Morengo Golf Course. There was a few walkers and bikers going by the park near the highway, but no one else IN the park.

New Players and Kids
Perfect course for new players and those working on the short game. I would say it would be great for kids, but there are no restrooms in this park! Which means make sure the kids go before you make the drive our here. I don't recall a playground, just a ramada, a dog park, and a basketball court.

Wonderful Practice Facility
Looking to do field practice, but fields are boring? Come on out here and practice big shots or short shots on an actual course with targets. You will have the whole place to yourself, so you won't be bothering anyone if you want to throw drives over the entire course from Tee 4 to Basket 7!

Lots of trees have been planted, so this park will become a nice shady oasis one day. Maybe they will add restrooms before then.

I thought it was a fun location and it would be super easy to create longer holes if you are not into 130 foot holes.

No restrooms, but the course borders an area with some privacy.

Cons:

No restrooms.

Very short as designed. However, it would be very easy to make up your own longer and more challenging holes.

If you don't live near Beaumont, it will not be worth making a special trip.

Other Thoughts:

The amenities are fabulous for a beginner's disc golf course in a beautiful community park.

Great course for folks that want to play a round in nature without anyone else around for miles.

Great course for folks looking to do some serious disc golf practice or bag another 9 hole course.

I will give it a C+. I will go back and play again. I like having a whole park to myself to do disc golf practice.
