Norris DGC

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 19, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Super fun layout
Course is being expanded
Good for a quick round
Beginner friendly
Some tricky lines
Several ace opportunities
Great design on the land allowed

Cons:

May be a putter only course for big arms
Moderately tricky to navigate in some spots
Several close fairways

Other Thoughts:

One of my favorite things to do is playing courses that I have never played. Sometimes you wind up at fun courses that you want to play again, and sometimes you end up at courses that you will play the one time and have no desire to return to. This was one of the fun ones! Before playing Norris DGC I had not heard much about the course from local and regional disc golfers so I didn't have very high expectations for this one. I guess I just assumed that since not many were talking about it, this course wasn't that great of a course. Boy, was I wrong! In hindsight, I believe that less players travel to 9 hole courses and will pass by them to get to an 18 hole course. With this being said, I had an absolute blast playing this little 9 hole course! I didn't play very good in my round on the course because it was my first attempt at this layout and I was also only throwing 3 brand new discs that I had never thrown. You will understand why if you check out the video below. I'll be honest, I am the kind of guy who sometimes dislikes courses that I played bad on. This was not the case on this course. I played bad but still enjoyed the layout. Like, a lot. I have been thinking about this course ever since I played it and I cannot wait to go back and play it again. It's not one of those long and challenging tests of endurance it's just a super fun and relatively short layout. Plenty of ace possibilities and some really tricky fairways. Not only was this course super fun to play, when I was there, I saw several tee box frames and alternate baskets! It appears that in the future you will be able to visit this course and have Short AND Long tees as well as Short AND Long baskets! I absolutely love courses like this! The disc golfers in that area are doing an outstanding job with the land that was available for this course. I can't wait to go back and play this course again (and the new tee/basket locations) and I really hope that the work the locals are doing is being noticed and they are granted an additional piece of property to put another course on. If there were two courses in this area, I would frequent this course much more often. My hat is off to the people who designed this course and are continuing to improve on it. Don't sleep on 9 hole courses! This is one that I would definitely recommend!

Great Road Trip Stop

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 25, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

I travel from Cincinnati to Knoxville quite regularly and needed to find a good, shorter course to stretch my legs. The 9 holer in Williamsburg, KY is not good so I was hopeful when I got off the exit and drove 10 min to the park. I was happy I did.
-Park had nice amenities including restrooms
-Practice basket behind the bathroom
-Some nice small elevation changes
-Wooded, but not overgrown
-Alternate pins or pads on every hole
-No navigation issues
-Hole 1 was a nice starting hole. A must get birdie in a fairly open area leading into the woods and teeing from the parking lot. At only 195' it's a good way to get your feet wet
-The ending hole is solid too. A mostly uphill throw back out of the woods, leaving you right by the parking lot and bathrooms
-Entire course can be played in about half an hour

Cons:

-Very short. No holes are longer than 250' and a few are under 200'
-Gravel teepads that wear out quick
-Several of the wooded holes feel similar and run together
-Near the end you do play relatively close to a fenced in backyard. It would take a terrible throw and kick to end up there, but I've seen some of us throw so it's possible.

Other Thoughts:

This course is really nice. I'd love to have it close for a practice course or for a stop when driving through the area. A switch to concrete tees could help rating but it seemed like a really solid 3 for me, a good course that works well with what it's got.

Norris Disc Golf Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 24, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Good parking at tennis courts and nearby Eric Harold park
Water available at fountain
Garbage can is near fountain. (Pease recycle cans and plastic at home)
Loaner discs frequently available

All disc catchers are Innova Pro 28 Disc Catchers
All holes are < 300 ft. so, while
nothing for those with big arms, shot shaping and finesse are rewarded

Nice course for beginner to intermediate players. There is a lot of generational play with parents and kids playing every day and the occasional group of 70 years old playing.

Heavily wood with high canopy and clear understory.
Park-like. Well signed from hole to hole. Several primitive benches
Trees are in play on almost all holes
Every hole is potential birdie hole; but mistakes risk bogies

There are no 'trick' basket placements and no mandos.

The course is well maintained.
Hard to lose a disc except in fall when all than canopy drops
Generally 10 degrees cooler on hot day

Variety of holes that play either RHBH or LHBH and some both (1, 6, 7)
2 slight uphill baskets (2 and 9)
1 downhill basket (3)
all others level down in the bottomland bowl

There are no great holes but all holes are laid out to take best advantage of the topology and large trees
.
Favorites are
Hole 2 slight uphill blind basket that favors L fade but punishes misses
Hole 3 downhill and is the last to surrender its best shot (slight anhyzer R?)
Hole 5 which has surrendered no aces so far but many basket strikes
it is very forgiving right and left
Least favorite is
Hole 9 plays uphill and is unforgiving on L

Cons:

Still in development
Current tee pads are gravel
Some better compacted than others

Course is short at < 1900 ft
All holes have technical considerations but course has only one dog leg (8)

Rain
Wet silt and clay can be slippery after rain

Bottom land accumulates water after heavy rain.
The water in two of the depressions fill gradually.
After Ida slid through, two of the depressions had 6 ft of water .
It drains quickly and the 6 foot of water was completely gone in 2 days (thanks to underlying limestone )

Other Thoughts:

Its very different From Elon (my first home course) or Shady Oaks
It's design borrows on lessons learned from layouts by Stan McDaniel (NC) and Jim Oates (CA)

A fast round can be played at lunch in 20-25 minutes

Many of the trees are smooth bark American Beech and they are resourceful at prevent discs from sliding through. their thin branches

Adding in fall 2021
Additions are in process but do not affect play
All holes will have right and left fade options
All tee pads will be converted to concrete or pavers
6 alternative tee pads
3 alternative baskets
9 alternative basket locations

When complete in Spring 2022 this will still be a 9 hole course but with multiple options of play from 1900 to 3000 lf

A great wooded 9 holer. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 27, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

- This is a true wooded course that requires line shaping on every hole.
- Risk reward. You can get to every basket for an easy birdie, but those line choices bring trees into play that could bring bogeys into play. Or you can throw relatively straight shots throw the primary gap and get stress free pars if you execute. Same with putting. Running putts introduces the chance at catching a tree or a rollaway.
- Elevation changes.
- Easy to navigate. Signs on trees leading you to the next tee and designated walking paths. Just a really well thought out course.
- Challenging wooded course, but the rough is pretty clean. Not much of a chance of losing a disc. Not much time spent looking for discs.

I probably need to play it a few times to describe the holes in detail, but there isn't a bad hole. Several holes that finish right. Several holes that finish left. Several downhill holes. An uphill finish on hole #9. Blind tee shot on #2. I threw a variety of discs and a variety of shots.

This is my new favorite 9 hole course in the Knoxville area.

Cons:

-Gravel tee pads.
- It might get a little sloppy and tough to navigate after a hard rain.
- There really isn't a signature hole. The flipside is that there also really isn't a bad hole.

Everything else are just the limitations that you can see on the course info page. 9 hole course, sub 1900 feet, single tee pads, single baskets (though there are a couple of baskets that could be treated as alternate baskets).

Other Thoughts:

Pay attention to the directions under course info. Simply following google maps can be a touch tricky. The course if very close to I-75, so this works well for people traveling through the area looking to bag courses. If you are a local, it is probably out of the way.

What is the highest that you would rate a sub-1900 foot nine hole course with gravel tee pads? That's how you should treat my rating.
