Pros:
Odell Park is a large, beautiful city park with a wealth of activities going on. The park is immaculately maintained and was abuzz with people enjoying the park's multitudes of activities. The disc golf course, currently New Brunswick's one and only course, has only been in operation for about a year now. The course is currently nine holes, although more holes are coming. The course begins right next to the parking lot when you enter the park at Rookwood and Wagoneers Lane. There is nice big course sign in both French and English laying out the basic rules and strategies of disc golf.
There are two natural tees for each hole. Each are marked by a front board only, white for the longs and red for the short tees. The red paint has faded pretty badly and is somewhat hard to recognize. The longer white tees are sometimes difficult to find as they're not only just longer, but sometimes at a far different angle from where one might expect to find them. The baskets are DGA models with the always hard to read red numbers on top. As of July 2015, there is no signage of any kind.
The area where the course is installed features some nice rolling terrain as well as a couple of technical throws through the woods. For a nine hole course, Odell gives you a pleasant variety of technical, uphill and more open shots. I really liked the starting hole best. It has you throwing a slight downhill shot through a fairly narrow gap and crossing a small creek. There wasn't much water in the creek in July but I think it might be a bigger factor in other parts of the year. The thing I didn't like about this hole was the fact that you were actually playing across some lovely beds of flowers. I'm afraid if they were to get broke down and trampled, someone is not going to be happy with us disc golfers.
Cons:
Gravel, dirt, grass tee pads are not good. They're an eyesore to this lovely park. They're slippery when wet. These are all too small.
No signs as of yet.
My favorite hole (#1) which plays through these lovely flower beds. Mature players like me could play this hole 100's of time without damaging these flowers. I worry about the 13-17 age group. They don't always think about the consequences of their actions, do they?
Other Thoughts:
What a great start for the Fredericton disc golf community! There were lots of players out enjoying the course. It's a nice course in a lovely park. The dual tees make it challenging for more players. When signs are added, additional holes installed and maybe some work done on the tee pads, this could become one of the premier courses in Eastern Canada.
