Discin' Them Blue Devil Blues 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 9, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

- The Peotone Blue Devils' school grounds contains a 9-hole course that meanders through several sections of the busy, multi-use park. Wending its way along ball field fences, past two separate playgrounds, a small pond, walking path, and at least one pavilion, this course mixes longer holes (hole #'s 2 & 4 each surpass 500') with a smattering of shorter ones (five holes are less than 250'). If nobody's in the park, this course is playable; however, the close proximity to the playgrounds (especially the second set), paths, fields, etc. will make this a nightmare and/or impossible to play when the park is busy.
- Water. I was pleasantly surprised to see a small pond behind hole #2's green. After 500', an errant approach long is a real possibility.
- Other park amenities. The first playground (between hole #'s 3 and 4) is a nice little mid-round pause if you have a little one along. Port-a-johns, water fountains, skate park, the typical array of foot/base/tennis/basket-ball fields/courts.
- Signage and rubber mat tees are sufficient. Next tee signage helps find hole #6 after a long transition (as the sign says, "follow the path"). Overall, the course flows well and makes sense after you locate the first hole (between the baseball field fences by the brick building.

Cons:

- Two holes (#'s 1 and #5) are too close to field fences. On hole #1 at least, a gap in the fence allows disc retrieval on the (very real) chance a disc goes over. No such luxury exists on #5, which uses the back fence of the baseball field as the left side of the fairway. If a disc goes over here, one must commence the long walk of shame. The rest of the course (hole #'s 6-9) play way to close to other park activities without adding much in the way of excitement or interest.
- Goose poop over by the small pond. It wasn't bad, but there was a bit there.
- Short, flat, openish holes provide little in the way of challenge. Long, flat, openish holes provide a bit more. Most of the challenge here can be found by avoiding blasting the many other park goers while they enjoy, say, a slide.

Other Thoughts:

- You can tell someone tried. A couple of the holes are pretty reasonable. E.g., Hole #3 is a short pitch n putt hole with the most trees in the way out of the nine holes...and an excellently designed pitch n putt hole. Hole #6 plays along a treeline on one side of the property, and while it impacts play little, it at least is easy-ish on the eyes.
- Nothing to avoid unless the school grounds have other activities going on at the time. Nothing to go out of your way, either.
