Jungle Disc Golf in Costa Rica drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 25, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Beautiful scenery and wildlife while playing in the jungle. Good variety of hole types. Some challenging long holes from hilltop as well as some shorter holes that can be aced. Friendly and knowledgeable hosts.

Cons:

Long walk from 10 to 11.

Other Thoughts:

I've been playing this jungle course for the last 5 years. It always tests your skills and never disappoints. Holes can change with the seasons and become more or less challenging depending so it's always an adventure. Be ready to hike on some of the holes, you'll for sure get a good workout while playing but that's one of the things I love about this course. I would highly recommend trying it out it if you're ever in Costa Rica. It''s a full 18 course and usually well maintained. Justin the host is always working hard to make the place better and we love to see the progress each time we come play.

A must stop for disc golfers in CR 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 25, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great use of the landscape.
Good mix of open and technical shots.
Beautiful scenery.
Homemade baskets with THICK chains catch really well.
Access to a nice shower/bathroom and salt water pool.
Friendly owners and staff.

Cons:

Many tee signs on the ground makes it a little difficult to navigate.
All dirt tees, some are a little difficult to discern.
Holes 11-13 require you to navigate barbed wire fences.
$25 to play.

Other Thoughts:

I found this course to be fun for all skill levels. There are short ace runs and longer downhill shots. Navigation was a little tough due to many of the tee signs on the front 9 being on the ground, though the provided course map is pretty accurate. We started at 9:00 AM and were quickly drenched in sweat. I strongly suggest bringing more water than you think you'll need. Fairways 11-13 require you to navigate a series of barbed wire fences, and it's not always obvious where the gates are (or if the exist at all). I had to crawl under a few. The homemade baskets catch as well or better than any I've ever played. I'm sure they are out there, but we didn't encounter any snakes, scorpions, or human eating spiders. We did have a horse meander through a couple of holes as we played.

All in all, this is a enjoyable course in a beautiful setting. It has a way to go to be the championship course it claims to be, but it's off to a good start. The owners are friendly, and the shower and dip in the pool were very refreshing after a sweaty round. Make sure to make a reservation before you go to the property. $25 is by far the most I've ever payed to play, but I've never had access to a salt water pool after a round. I highly suggest stopping at the brand new soda (cafe) about 2 km from the course. Amazing food and views. If you have the chance to play during your stay in Costa Rica, don't hesitate. They have discs available to rent if you are traveling without plastic.

Welcome To The Jungle 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 6, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course would be a solid 3.5 in the states but once this is the Only course in Costa Rica I gave it a 4.5. Justin Dolan, the owner is super friendly as well as the local golfers. Great people and just a fantasic place to play golf. The locals get together on Wednesdays between 10-12 for a round. Big thanks go Piper and Kealy for the great round. Kealy is the Costa Rica champion.

Check out St Michael's Sustainable Community website for a place to stay while there.

Baskets are homemade copy of disc catchers and catch very well. Tee pads are dirt or gravel and the tee signs give hole number but not hole info. Everything plays par 3

Bonus, there are lime trees all over. Great for squeezing in your cerveza.

Hole 1 starts by the Ranch/Kitchen area and plays straight through a tight hole and down a slight incline. Stay out of the Basel and green house and you can birdie.

Hole 2 is a short shot across a small Valley with a road. I just turned my putter over a little and you can park the basket. The grass is high and if you dont make it across you are shooting up a steep hillside.

Hole 3 is above 2s basket and is almost straight down. Great ace run hole with a few trees as back stops. You have to go through the cattle fence here so be sure to put it back up. Same holds true through out the course.

Hole 4 ACE RUN. Flat straight shot. To the left of the basket there is a creek an to the right is a hillside. Stay straight and you'll be 4 under after 4 holes.

Hole 5 is an up hill turn over. The basket can be hard to see. This can hole can turn ugly if you hyzer out before the road. There is a flat area below the basket you can land if you turn your drive over a little. Then just putt up and out for a 3. This hole gives you the first taste of the steep terrain you will be facing for the rest of the course.

Hole 6 sits to the left behind a large palm. You can flick it or hyzer around the tree. To the left of the basket is a step hillside that you dont want to get into. The hillsides here are steep and thick. If you stay on top of the hills here youll have a nice round. You end up on the sides of the hills looking and youll be there a while.

Hole 7 is a high hyzer over the palm. Not to long and not to short. I just popped it up over the palm and let it fade in. Very 2 able. Score card says its a par 4 at 500 something feet. Thats wrong, its par 3 maybe 275.

Hole 8 is a straight shot right behind a palm. The green is pretty safe.

Hole 9. The tee is next to 5s basket. NOTE do not throw to the basket on the hillside you can see. That is 16s basket. 9s basket is behind and to the right of the dirt road intersection at the bottom of the hill. Its hard to see from the box but its a downhill turnover shot. I just let a mid range turnover and glide (Element) to the basket.

Hole 10 down hill shot through some tight trees next to the creek. If you end up to the left on the hillside its super thick and hard to find anything. Took over an hour to find my putter once. You can see the basket but you have to thread the needle to get there. Be careful of snakes, I didnt see any but it seems like the perfect place that you would.

Hole 11 is a loooong walk. From 10 its best to get back on the road and follow that all the way to the top. You will walk by 12 and 13s basket and tee to get there. Once there at the end of the road the hole plays down hill with a steep hillside to the right you want to stay off of. The fairway is pretty large but the grass is deep. Sometimes there are cows there.

Hole 12 is across the road through the fence, about 20 feet from the sign. Its a straight downhill shot with a dangerous hillside and creek to the left. Not a disc friendly area lol. It plays longer then it looks to me for some reason. Once you tee, go back through the fence and walk down the road to the entrance by the basket.

Hole 13. Straight down hill with creek to left and right at the bottom. Ace run

Hole 14 you go through the fence behind 13 and throw straight uphill. Short but very steep uphill shot.

Hole 15. Tee is up dirt steps by bench area. Once up top you can see the basket It sits on a nice green area that is reachable with any type of throw. The road around the green plays for an easy 3 but dont get below the road or youll be in trouble.

Hole 16 is hard to see from tee and right hand back hand doesnt really have a hole. I just tried to punch it through and stay to the right and let it hyzer out. The basket is on the hillside.

Hole 17 is flat and pretty safe. Only danger is power line

Hole 18 is the longest and hardest hole on the course to me. The grass is tall and you have to get past a power line pole and wires to get to the fairway. To the right is a steep hillside and to the left the road, which plays casual. Get past the power lines and find your disc and shot up to the basket. I was unable to 3 this hole the 5 times I played.

This course is really amazing. Its doesnt play that hard but the terrain and hills can be tuff to walk if your not used to that type of golf. Can compare it to last hole at Santa Cruz, or first couple holes at Stafford Lake, or maybe a few holes at Ozark Mountain or Black Jack.

Cons:

Walk to 11

Other Thoughts:

Bring water, play early to bet the heat. I played best when I started on 10.

Score card says 7 is par 4. Thats incorrect, its a par 3.

Make this trip! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 21, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The only course in the area - BUT worth the trip if you are in county and an avid player. Strenuous work out on the big hills and valleys, but for an old accurate player I had no problems staying out of big drop off areas and plenty of ace runs. Fun crew of local players to join if you plan ahead on their facebook page, helpful for first round. BIG elevation changes, BIG risk/reward on longer holes.

Cons:

Grass high when played (just after rainy season) but I lost no discs. Bring water - you will need it!.

Other Thoughts:

Rooms and houses for rent if you want to stay a while, enjoy the pool, the massive views of mountains to east and ocean to west.

Pros:

This is a must play course! If you like to disc and you're traveling in Costa Rica, make sure to visit the Permaculture Country Club course. I was fortunate to show up on a weekly league day and got to play with many of the locals. Everyone was incredibly friendly and hospitable. Recently upgraded to 18 holes. Great mix of short and longer, challenging holes. Just to walk the course is an amazing experience!!

Pura Vida 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 1, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-From the minute you walk out of the owner's house you see incredible views of the rainforest, the ocean to the west and the mountains to the east. You really cannot beat the views here.
-As far as course amenities go, it is hard to beat Permaculture Country Club of Costa Rica. Right by hole 1 are pools, fountains, water, a bathroom covered in tropical plants, and even a shower. There are gardens with fruits and vegetables by holes 1 and 2. In the future there will also be a bar and restaurant in this area.
-The signs are top notch metal signs and the baskets are the best homemade baskets I have ever played on. They are all made by a local welder to PDGA specifications and catch great.
-The wildlife here is rivaled by few other courses. There are sloths, poison dart frogs, toucans, macaws, parakeets, hummingbirds, monkeys, and many types of butterfly.
-This is not currently a busy course and you are likely to have the course to yourself. Justin, the owner, can also show you around the first time.
-Camping is permitted on the property and there are 2 airbnb properties right by the course.

Hole 1: The tee is underneath a lemon tree with pools and gardens to your left and just in front of the tee. It plays slightly downhill with green houses on the left and a sharp drop off beyond the trees to the right down into the rainforest.

Hole 2: You tee off below a small group of trees with the rainforest on the left and gardens on the right. The basket is placed underneath a couple of trees on the side of the hill.

Hole 3: Hole 3 throws from an elevated tee down into the rainforest over the river bed. The basket is lined with palm trees in the backdrop.

Hole 4: The tee pad is in the rainforest with the river to your left and the hillside lined with trees on the right.

Hole 5: Up the hill and to the right of hole 4's basket is an elevated tee. This hole plays from the rainforest over some rolling hills to a basket by some lemon trees in the open.

Hole 6: This hole tees off from the pasture and throws around a large palm tree. It forces you to pick a line and hit it. There is danger down to the left.

Hole 7: Hole 7 has several trees lining the left side of the fairway. There is a route through the trees as well as a BH hyzer route on the right side.

Hole 8: Is a short shot to a basket by a palm tree. This is a must birdie to score well.

Hole 9: This hole may be my favorite hole on the course. This is a top of the world shot to a basket tucked to the right. There is thick rainforest on both sides of the fairway.

Hole 10: Hole 10 tees off from the side of the gravel road and down into the rainforest through thick trees to a basket by the river bed.

Hole 11: This is a long hole that is lightly wooded with significant drop offs on both sides of the fairway.

Hole 12: This is another long hole out in the open with the basket tucked to the right.

Cons:

-Unfortunately one of the biggest pros of the course, the location, is also one of the biggest cons. This course is hard to get to! The cheapest option is flying into San Jose, the going to the bus stop in front of the airport and taking it downtown. Then you take a taxi to the Tracopa bus station, and get on a bus for about $10 USD towards Manuel Antonio. Get of at the Parrita bus station and call Justin to pick you up from there. This option takes about 3.5 hours and will cost ou about $20 USD. The other option is to get a rental car and drive there.
-The terrain here is quite challenging and is definitely not for the faint of heart. Traversing these hills and hiking through the rainforest is difficult and taxing for even the most experienced disc golfer. Prepare for a rustic, but rewarding disc golf experience.
-There are certain spots on the course where it is difficult to find or even difficult to retrieve a disc from a steep drop off.
-Tricky transition from hole 8 to hole 9's tee. You walk past 9's basket and up a hill to get to hole 9's tee.
-Spiders, scorpions, snakes, africanized bees, and wasps.

Other Thoughts:

I highly recommend a trip to this course to anyone who loves disc golf and is looking for a truly unique disc golf experience. While definitely for the more adventurous, you won't be disappointed as long as you don't come expecting pristine, manicured fairways. I gave this course a 4.5 now that the second 9 have been installed.
