Beautiful mountain resort course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 20, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Everyone should experience Primland Resort at least once. It's incredible. If your travels and your budget allow you to stay at Primland for a weekend, while the disc golf may be an afterthought compared to the food and drink, spa, ball golf, other outdoor activities, and general R&R, you should absolutely do it. And while you're there, you might as well bag a beautiful, rec-level mountain course.

+ By far the #1 pro of this course is the location: Primland Resort. It's a beautiful, truly elite 5-star resort. And it happens to have a decent disc golf course, so bag it if you can!

+ Not surprisingly, this course, like the rest of the Primland property, is stunningly beautiful. The first tee is an open, downhill shot with a panoramic view of the mountains. Amazing. The rest of the course is equally beautiful and well-maintained: manicured grass, mature trees in places, heavier woods in others.

+ Lots of terrific elevation to play with here: super fun downhill holes, a couple of good uphill holes. Downhills are always more fun -- easier, but more fun -- and that's what the designers were going for here: fun over challenge. The result is a very good rec-level course that people of all skill levels will enjoy for the Fun Factor and beauty of the property.

+ Ace runs! Several holes are very short (and/or the downhill layouts make the holes play exceptionally short) making for a number of very aceable holes.

+ Nice signage, navigation, baskets, etc.

+ The course parking lot is at the Stables Saloon restaurant and bar. Plan your round around drinks and dinner at the resort's casual dining location! They have live music most nights and an all-you-can-eat for $40 format. (If that seems pricey to you, you should see how much Elements, the fine dining restaurant, costs, not to mention the lodging! Again, this is a 5-star resort. You can't stay here, eat here, or even play disc golf here without shelling out some money.)

Cons:

This course is terrific for what it's designed to deliver: fun, fairly easy disc golf in an astoundingly beautiful mountain resort location. While the resort is a destination experience, the disc golf course on its own is not. It's light on the challenge.

- Will not challenge Advanced or Pro players. Intermediate players will shoot under par (helped by some of the par 4's which are really par 3's) and have a lot of fun, but shouldn't be too challenged.

- Very, very expensive to play here. It's free for guests of the resort...which you cannot do for under $1,000, in all likelihood. They rent discs if you don't have any.

- Gravel tee pads. They're okay, not great.

- This really should be a par 54 course by most standards, but several of the longer holes are labeled par 4. There are 3 holes over 300 feet, none over 400 feet. One of the par 4's is only 260 feet. Kind of silly, but nice if you like racking up birdies and eagles!

- Some of the holes are true poke-and-hopes with no discernable fairway. A couple of the par 4's are par 4's, in my opinion, simply because they are tougher and have no fairway.

Other Thoughts:

More than anything, a beautiful course on a beautiful resort that you should try if you have the means to do so.

How the other side disc golfs 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 25, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Well taken care of grounds with no debris on the fairway and nicely cut grass.
Nice tee signs and good difficulty adjustment between long and short tees
Gravel tee pads were well done and leveled off
Couple nice scenery holes
Probably the cleanest course I have ever played

Cons:

Takes a bit of effort to get to
Nothing really offered for upper level players

Other Thoughts:

This course has been on my wish list for a while. It's located inside a 1200 acre high end resort, offering golf, hunting, mountain biking and even guided tree climbing, yes tree climbing. Getting there takes a bit of driving, we came in through the north gate, checked in there and got a guest pass for the car, then had to go to the lodge to pay to play the course, fee was $10 but when compared to the other activities there, it's pretty cheap.

First off this is not a professional level course nor is it a beginner one either. The longs offer a decent challenge to an mid level AM and the shorts to an INT level player. Course is laid out on top one of the mountains and makes good use of elevation changes, there are some fun shots to throw and some decent lines to shape. For the most part it's fair and rewarding for good shots but there could be some nasty rollaways in spots. The course is well maintained though, the fairways and green areas are well kept, some nasty rough exists on the first couple holes but it's going to take a shank to be in it.

I was a little concerned about being just an average guy riding up to play here but everyone we spoke with that worked there were extremely nice and made us feel welcome. This is definitely a place to stay for people that are much more affluent than me but I wasn't made to feel that way. I'm kinda torn on how I feel about places like these, but seems like access is available to anybody who wants it so that's a plus. Course is worth stopping to play if you're on a trip through the area.

Land of the Primes 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 20, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

The pure natural beauty and serenity of this resort/course is awesome and only rivaled by few other courses that I've played. The rock formations and rhododendron kind of reminds me a mini Black Jack DGC in NC. I saw lots of deer and wild turkeys in the meadow and had a big hawk fly just a few feet over my head!

Walking up to hole 1 is a stunner framed between the two pines in the corral and the tee perched up at the edge overlooking the basket in the meadow below and mountains in the backdrop. Holes 1-3 play in the open rolling meadow. Then you play in the beautiful and technical mountain forest the remainder. Excellent risk and reward and variety of shots and couple holes with multiple fairway routes to the basket.

Most holes have two nice gravel tees and next tee signs. The long/back tees are the nicest gravel tees I've ever played on. The tee sign and bench is always at the back or long tee. The homey wood tee signs are surprising accurate. The short or forward tees are generally quite short and make the hole easier and provide a unique look to the basket.

Course seems to be well maintained for the most part and is impressive being a mountain course that probably doesn't get a whole lot play. I only saw one poison ivy vine on the course and it was dead. There is a marked 9 hole loop playing holes 1-5 and 15-18. Restrooms/locker rooms and bar/dining by pro shop.

Cons:

Some rugged mountain terrain to hike in places, especially off the fairway. Would recommend hiking shoes. Couple rough spots off the fairway where there's a decent chance to lose a disc, mainly holes 1, 2, 3, 12 and 16. The short or forward tees are not the easiest to find or always well marked, but they are there if you look for them and look at the sign.

Hole 12 I wasn't a big fan of, I actually thought basket 13 was the right one and threw to it the first time.

Not really a con, but be advised. Must wear collared shirt. It will take you a bit longer than you expect to get to the course, so this is not a quick play on a road trip. Once you arrive at the front gate, you then have to drive another 4 miles or so down a windy single lane road around the mountain to the golf pro shop to pay and then drive another 2 miles or so back to the dg course by the saloon.

Other Thoughts:

Primland is a 5 star, 12,000 acre mountain top resort with spectacular sweeping views of the Blue Ridge Mountain vistas in the Meadows of Dan, Va and also overlooks the North Carolina Piedmont. There are all kinds of fun activities to do here and I would love to spend a whole week here, but staying in the European style Chateau or one of the private cottages would be a bit steep for my pay grade. The cottages are more affordable with a group of people though. They also have some ridiculous tree houses for rent.

It is pretty cool to be able to play the disc golf course and hang out on property the whole day for only $10, but you are also kind of in the middle of nowhere. You will want to stay there the whole day, so prepare yourself for that. The dining options are somewhat reasonable although not particularly convenient unless the saloon is open.

The course was built mostly for beginners and I must commend the course designer for making an awesome scenic mountain course for that purpose while also providing seasoned vets a fun technical challenge where eagles can be had rather easily on the par 4s with a great tee shot. There is definitely enough land for a championship length course here that could be truly epic.

Primland was a lot more fun that I anticipated and almost cubby aced hole 4. I also made some fun long safari holes on 12-16. Hole 12 you can tee from the road for a more interesting shot and/or play to 13's basket from road of 12 tee. From behind 13's basket on the road you can play to 12's basket, and 12's basket can also be played from down either path back toward 16's basket. Hole 14 is good on it's own. From the path next to 14's basket is a great tee to both 15 and 16's basket. 15's short tee also makes a great hole to 16's basket.

Overall I'd recommend Primland to any player that has a heartbeat with the caveat to not expect that this is a championship level course. I highly recommend you drive in or out from the Blue Ridge Parkway for some amazing views. Enjoy!
