On Brave Mountains We Conquer 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 14, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Hiking trip gets cancelled, day off of work. Should be doing some homework. Let's go to West Virginia! This is a good debut course to start your list of courses you play in West Virginia. Front nine plays on a mountain. Back nine plays back in the general park area. The front nine's entire look made this a new disc golf experience for me because of the different mountains, the different looks of the trees, and the sedimentary rock fairway on #7 made that hole look like you were throwing into a parking garage. This was a new location for me, a North Carolina resident that by the way, resides in the NC mountains.

-On a few holes on the front nine, you'll feel like you are in the middle of a camping trip and are many miles away from civilization. Nope. Many restaurants nearby. Crazy how the look and feel can dramatically change. One moment, you are on a hiking trip, then you are back in a local park in the middle of Princeton.

-Now onto the holes. You'll see some very neat holes here. If you aren't close to here, you'll understand that the game has some different variations. #6 is off a small cliff and over a path. #7 is on the top of the cliff on sediment ground playing up and back down a small mound. #10 is a short and slightly downhill par three back in the open. You REALLY want to be wide right off the pad since the hill you throw down remains flat on the left side as it declines straight ahead. If you go left, you'll either hit the side of the declining hill left of the basket and roll a long way and settle with a par, or you'll be left with an extremely difficult steep downhill putt. Either way, left is no good on this hole.

-#9. Yes the designer's least favorite hole is my favorite hole. I absolutely loved the split fairway valley on the edge of the woods here. In my opinion this is the best looking hole at Princeton. Super fun midrange shot that plays as a gentle hyzer. You go too far right, you could catch a VERY bad roller and be kicked out of the woods and be left pitching back in there.

-There's a swimming pool with a HUGE slide. Ten feet deep and the top of the slide is probably 30' high. I can't remember about how high. Just a random guess but high enough to call this a possible tourist attraction.

-Two sets of pads. The blues are a little bit tougher but are still very shreddable. Even par would probably be around 920 from the blues and there are a few holes that the open division with an average of 970 would probably score over par on (#2, 5, 11, and maybe 16) but it's mostly because of how meticulous they are. Even shorter holes such as #18 can mess up your score since the basket is on a big and steep drop off while the fairway is entirely flat. Many holes you can bounce back on for birdie. Distance is not much of an obstacle as far as caution.

Cons:

-Elevation changes given in the hole info do not seem right. Says that #15 has a 55 foot elevation loss and there's no way. #16's pad is below #15's basket in topography and you throw back up the hill on #16 and it says the elevation increase is 25 feet (that I believe). I think #15's loss is maybe just past the 20' mark. There were others. For instance #8. Definitely not 30' down. The decline is very slight. Course has a hilly terrain, yes, a couple of holes probably do exceed over 30' in elevation change. But if you see the pictures on the media, you won't see as much elevation as the signs indicate.

-#11. Not a fan of the triple mando "C shaped") par three. It's memorable, but very weird. There's three mando trees that all point left. Definitely a cut roller hole but I'm not fond of having that as the default option off of a pad. I think that should be an alternate option or the optimal option if you land in a bad lie. Not fond of #15 either. It's a boring downhill toss. Only 145' long around a wide cluster of trees. #15 is probably my least favorite hole here.

-Not a fully defined fairway on #5 from the long. Nice arch by the basket though!

-Seems to lose flavor and its perks after #13. The last five holes were not my meaning of fun. You might like throwing over the garden on #14 or the ace run opportunity on #15 and the danger on #18 but I enjoyed the front nine a lot more than the back.

Other Thoughts:

-When I arrived, the main entrance was closed so I turned around and looked for another way to get in. There is a huge parking lot further down the road parallel to the main entrance. I parked in that lot and walked up the steep hill that was #17's fairway. Just park there. You'll drive past a few buildings. It was a bit of a walk to the first hole but wasn't too bad.

-I really loved Glenwood. I read the designer's review and I thought it was better than that. It's very well thought out and highly pleasing. The baskets were in the longs when I played there and that was a 3.5 hour drive that I'd recommend to anyone. This course (Princeton) is a nice second course in the town of Princeton WV. You won't see the variety that you'll see at Glenwood, but this place is very neat. It's a good little course with some distinctiveness and quality. Out of town players will appreciate the difference in appearance and design from their home courses.

Really Enjoyed This Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 22, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

- The signs are very, very well made. Good information on them too!
- The course is very well marked; follows hiking paths each time. Trees have markers. AND....the Signs are elevated so you can easily see them when searching.
- Mando's are well marked!
- The hole mix is very good: lots of up, down, left, right, and some good gaps.
- Challenging and forgiving (in the fall, at least).

Cons:

I hate to even mention anything at all.

- parking is a little strange. If you park near #1, #18 ends a little bit away.
-summer may get crowded since its near a pool and hiking trails can cause delays.

Other Thoughts:

I recently played a course that was not finished, no clear way to go, no markers, no map, tee markers were signs.....on the ground....which you cannot see from when looking.

This course is the EXACT OPPOSITE! It's a very finished, well designed, and well laid out course. The navigation is one of the best I've seen. Great experience.

Pros:

Cons:

Concrete tees are not level..sometimes sloping downhill ,but still decentDeath putts everywhere... Could get very frustratingNeed a fewTee direction signs between tees.. But download map helpsHole 11 especially but whole course has a lot of potential contact possibility with other park users.. Trails and picnic areas well used and course constantly crosses

Other Thoughts:

Challenging courseEven well placed throws can be in some rough liesLots of thornsA lot of tight lines/narrow gapsI would not consider beginner friendly...front 9 too technical for newbies with harsh rough pennalties... Back 9 has way too much contact with park users and almost every hole a death putt with crazy rollaway potential. All said, as a decent control player ended with a +11 ... With lots of tree contact and a few death putt rollaways... I enjoyed the challenge ...would play again

Ivy League City Park 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 19, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice concrete tees, tee signs, and yellow DisCatcher baskets. Good variety of wooded and open technical shots and integration of the hilly terrain providing some decent fun factor.

2 loops of nine holes, front 9 heavily wooded and technical, back 9 lightly wooded and beginner friendly. Next tee indication on baskets.

Cons:

Like many city parks, beware there's a fair amount of trash and broken glass. Interference with other park users. Poison ivy.

Mostly short and technical, so not many opportunities to air out some long drives. Potential for some punishing kicks off trees and roll aways. Be prepared to do some hiking.

PRO TIP - Park by Swimming Pool for hole 1. Took me a while to find hole 1, I parked in a lot with a kiosk assuming it was for disc golf, so after hiking about a half mile down a trail, I figured this couldn't be right. Also took me a long time to find hole 7, I completely backtracked hole 6 to get to 7, IDK if there is another way.

Other Thoughts:

IMO Princeton City Park is a good complement to Glenwood DGC. There's some really cool holes, but I wanted some longer holes. I think the design is about maxed out for a small park. So overall I rated this as a good course.

Fun but unforgiving! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 22, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Great variety of holes, which require a variety of shots to play this course well; backhands, sidearms, and thumbers all come into play here.

-Decent flow of holes that takes you throughout the beautiful park. Even if someone wanted to just walk with you while you played, they'd be rewarded with a great walk.

-a couple of ace run opportunities on 6, 10, and 18, but high risk/reward factor on 10 and 18, which makes things interesting.

-Great signage for each hole with distance, elevation change, and hazards/OB/DZ clearly marked.

- Great use of space. The course does a good job of steering clear of most of the hiking trails. There was really only one time that I had to wait for a pedestrian to clear my line on 6.

-Fantastic practice basket with 5 ft intervals marked out to 35ft. It's located behind the swimming pool (the slide side), near the teebox for 10.

Cons:

-Slippery when wet!!! Be very careful with your footing if it's rained anytime recently. It's worth it to take the longer way round on the main road or trails to avoid slipping on the cut-through paths when it's wet.

-While the pads are nice, concrete teepads, some of them have shifted or warped, and are no longer level. Mind your footing.

-2 of the teepads are really short, forcing you to shoot from a standstill (6 and 15), but they're shorter holes, so you're not missing out on too much.

-The transition from 4 to 5 can be very confusing. Be sure to get a picture of the map (available near teebox 1 or online). A sign pointing to the trail and distance to tee 5 would really help.

-This is a very hilly course, so many of the greens have very high rollaway potential. It makes this a very punishing, but interesting course that requires you to keep good angle control on your throws. Still, prepare to be frustrated and to see your Birdie or Par putts very quickly turn into Bogeys and Double Bogeys.

Other Thoughts:

Pay close attention to the tape on the spokes of the baskets, as they point (generally) to the next tee box. We missed hole 8 because we didn't pay attention to this, so had to walk back to it.

This course is not very cart friendly, given the elevation changes and some of the paths. I would carry.

The creator of the course did a great description for each hole below, so I won't recap. Holes 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 12 are my favorites, and are the holes that make me want to go back again. Will definitely play this course again next time I visit Princeton!

Back 9 is an excellent opportunity for a quick family game or to just stretch some muscles if you are more experienced.

The Front 9 is more challenging and requires a variety of shots in order to be successful.

Good city park course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 15, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Variety of shots was great for a small city park course.
Tee signs we great very trust worthiness and accurate except for elevation markings on some.
Front 9 were great for advance players but the back 9 was great for beginners
The putting green was very nice and had markers with 5 foot increments.

Cons:

Concrete tee pads are needed, the course gets played a lot and tee pads are now muddy. Also tee pads are to short and need to be longer on some holes. The paths between holes were long hilly and hard to find on the front 9 also on front 9 trees that were cut down were cut at 2 inches off the ground and are a tripping hazard or a ankle breaker especially with all the leaves on the ground

Other Thoughts:

Red tape on the bottom of basket directs you to the next hole

Fun Park Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 3, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

9 challenging holes, 9 easy holes. Something for everyone.
Pretty easy to navigate, if you pay attention.
Good variety of shots required.

Cons:

Had a hard time finding the first tee from where I parked. Also not much parking close to the course (park by the swimming pool).

Other Thoughts:

If I were laying this course out, I'd have the two nine-hole loops flipped - you'd start with 10 and finish with 9. 10-18 is the easy, family-friendly loop, and makes a great warm-up. 1-9 is tougher, with more elevation and longer holes. 10 is also closer to parking ;)

I ran into a few dog walkers and some joggers while I was there (and the dog walkers were ON the course, not any trails or paths), but for the most part I had the course to myself on a beautiful Friday morning. Had a great time, and will definitely play here again when I get the chance - but I'll start with hole 10, and THEN play my 18.

Come check out the arch 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 17, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

* 2 distinct loops. The back 9 is great for families but a challenge to advanced players.
* 2 tees per hole giving even more options.
* Brand new discatchers
* The course forces you to use multiple throw styles but also gives you many choices.
* Practice basket between the two loops.
* Nice park with swimming pool between both loops.
* Great use of elevation.
* Great use of limited land.
* Shelters and restrooms available.

Cons:

* No signage YET Edit: 8/10/17 Permanent signage is in raising my rating.
* No concrete pads YET. Edit: 6/21/18 Concrete tees for both sets on every hole installed
* Unearthed a lot of broken glass and trash during the build. The park was and still is very littered off the beaten bath which is where the course is.
* The course is on the short side, this could be a con or pro, depends on your preference.
* Parking is somewhat limited especially during pool hours.
* Being a brand new course it is rough around the edges, with play this will correct itself.

Other Thoughts:

I am the course designer and architect but I will try to be as unbiased as possible. I'll actually probably be harder on myself than others. The course opened July 3rd and is playable but I am still awaiting signage. Basket spoke points to next hole and I have a course map uploaded. I designed this course to fit most any players skill. It has two distinct loops, the second of which I've dubbed the "family loop". It is shorter than the first 9 and is a much easier walk through the manicured part of the park. But don't let the name fool you completely as it is well above average in technicality. The first 9 is also very technical with some cool holes. There are two tees per hole which gives even more options. Tees are either natural if they were on a level surface or framed in crush run if I had to level. Concrete will be coming in the fall after I make sure all the kinks are out. Right now I give the course a 3.5 but with signs and concrete I feel the course will be a strong 4.0. It won't be for players wanting to air out huge bombs but if you are looking for a technical course this will be right up your alley. As for the individual holes.

Hole 1: 315/366 Hole one starts out across one of the only open lots in the park giving you really the only chance to air a shot out. Most of the throw is open with the basket setting down a wooded slope 35 ft. Love opening holes like this.

Hole 2: 240/300 Probably the scariest tee shot on the course. The opening throw plays throw a very narrow tunnel and over a brushy valley. It turns sharp right at the end. If you hit the 190 ft long gap and have a left to right finish you will be putting.

Hole 3: 162/237 Extremely up hill requiring 300 ft power. A lone tree in the middle half way up the fairway and a steep drop off on the left. One of my favorite holes on the course.

Hole 4: 260/314 Another great hole. From longs you have a straight route but through trees, you also have a pretty wide forehand route to the left but with a low canopy this is very risky. Take your pick of shots and hope you get close.

Hole 5: 245/302 The "arch" hole. The tee shot requires a low boring throw as there is a low canopied tunnel and the basket sits slightly above the tee area. There are several mature trees in the fairway giving a few small gaps to hit. To the left of the basket is an old stone archway, not really sure of its significance but it looks really cool. Two days after the course opened a traveling player already posted the arch on Reddit.

Hole 6: 195/219 In all my designs I look for a cool downhill ace run hole. This is it. You have to weave between several mature trees but not go too far as an OB road is 25 ft behind the basket. I've already heard from some saying this is their favorite hole on the course.

Hole 7: 213/295 Now we get into the actual woods. I've never seen a hole like this, not sure if that is a good or bad thing. The tee shot crosses a flat bare shale lot for 150 ft. You then enter the woods by first clearing a 6ft high bank and on the other side the woods slope sharply down and left. The basket sits guarded by trees and is completely surrounded by downed trees. An OB walking path lays down and to the left but really should not come into play. Very unique hole.

Hole 8: 314/371 The only par 4 on the course from the longs. The fairway is completely wooded with small gaps down each side. It bends slightly left the entire length while trees are scattered everywhere. The tee shot itself has to first hit a 15 ft wide tunnel. If you can keep your disc clean you can get a rare birdie. Or you can also hit every tree on the hole. I'm very proud of this hole, not bad for clearing almost 400 ft worth of 12 ft high thorns with hand tools.

Hole 9: 225/279 May be my least favorite hole on the course, at least from longs. While there are several gaps there really isn't one suited for me, I can hit the gaps but can't give myself birdie looks. It can be done though I've seen it with my own eyes lol. The tee shots are thrown over another very brushy valley for the first 150 ft or so, it looks much farther though. The green is sloped pretty hard left to right but I do have walls of downed trees catching what is a good shot turned roller. I love the green, hate the tee shot.

This loop starts the "family" loop. I advise families with children play this loop twice using both shorts and longs to give 18 holes. I think its very important to get families and especially children playing our sport and I'm very proud that I could give them this loop while also making it technical enough for advanced skill level players.

Hole 10: 187/217 A short blind tee shot that goes slightly downhill and a soft right to left. Line of pines on the right guard the playground that is several hundred feet away. Pool on the left that maybe 1 out of 500 throws may find. The green gives a surprising amount of roll aways so a good tee shot may end up out of the circle.

Hole 11: 245/300 Fish hook hole. The tee shot throws over a manicured valley with three sets of mando trees on the right guarding handicap parking and a restroom. Miss any mando and you proceed to the dropzone which is a 60ft deathputt with a steep drop off behind the basket. A well placed tee shot gives you a short approach to the basket.

Hole 12: 210/225 The two tees give two very different looks at the hole. The longs plays through a tight tunnel in which your shot needs a slight left to right turn. A large bush on the left catches discs that don't turn. The green and fairway are both sloped left to right down towards the park road which is OB. The shorts play from the other side of the road throwing up and needing a right to left high hyzer. There will be some cursing on this hole thanks to roll aways.

Hole 13: 180/213 The hole has a double mando 80 ft off the long tee and maybe 20 ft wide. This is to protect both holes 12 and 14 and I shortened the hole also to protect those holes. The basket is under a low canopy group of trees. If you hit the mando you are not making worse than par.

Hole 14: 197/227 Perfectly flat open throw that plays longer than the distance for whatever reason. The basket is just on the other side of a medicinal garden which plays as a hazard.

Hole 15: 139/146 My family loop downhill hole. This hole is fun as hell. It is steeply downhill and around a group of pines. The basket is in the middle of 5 pines within 6 ft of it. The slope continues down to an OB park road behind the basket. Another cursing hole. Love this hole!

Hole 16: 197/300 My least favorite hole on the course. I struggled figuring out what was best for this hole and I think I came up with something. The tee shot from long is steeply uphill and then has to finish around a cropping of trees to a basket on a steep mowed slope.... yep more cursing. Shorts takes out the initial steep hill. This is the one place where walkers may come closer to play than I'd like but i will have it signed so everyone knows. I will get some hate on this hole.

Hole 17: 208/252 Another tunnel shot that plays slightly uphill off the tee landing in an open field. OB parking lot behind the basket. Nothing really challenging other than the tunnel. I have plans of building an elevated pyramid green in the next few months.

Hole 18: 138/173 One of the best short holes I've ever seen. The tee shots are across open grass but you are throwing at a basket that is on the edge of a severely steep slope directly behind the basket. If you miss a put you could literally roll 150 away with not much of a shot back up to the basket. It's a great finishing hole because of the risk reward of going for that putt or ace run.
