Lots To Like Here But There Are Things To Improve Upon! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 22, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

The PUD Course (Public Utilities District) starts next to the Operations Center. There's lots of parking and there is a course sign and map here. Currently, there is no permanent signage although it is said to be forthcoming. The concrete tee pads are second to none, they're plenty long and grooved for inclement weather. The baskets are not so impressive. They are Discatcher Sport models which have the cylinder thing on top. Some have numbers on top some are missing the numbers on top. There are wonderful little next tee arrows hanging below but although they point you in the right direction, we still struggled at times. Some baskets are used for both the orange and the blue layouts while others only serve one layout.

Being more than a little dense, I'm still a bit confused by the the course configuration changing on whether the month is even or odd. I'm not sure what would be different playing here in June or July. There was another player here with his son and as we passed each other at certain points, we were constantly asking each other, "Where is 4 Blue was or Orange # 7"? He found some while I discovered others. It's not the easiest course to navigate alone.

The terrain is good, not great. There is a little bit of elevation and no water.

# 5 Orange gets my vote as prettiest hole on the course. It's a simple 260' throw to a basket at the bottom of a hill. # 6 Blue gets my vote as the toughest hole here. It's basically straight and open 655' but it's just slightly uphill all the way. Then # 7 Blue gets my vote as the most wasted basket placement here. The basket sits up on the road 475' beyond this lovely, hilly large gathering of trees. I would have definitely placed the basket somewhere in this wonderfully protected fairly steep hillside set among 50 large Fir trees. It probably would rank as the Signature hole.

Cons:

There's much about this course that makes it average. There is really no signature hole. Too many holes were set out in the open.

The awesome tee pads had a lovely # 3 in the corner of EVERY tee pad. As in, 3 for PUD # 3. The hole number on each tee pad would have made so much more sense. Put the PUD # 3 on a prominent spot on the tee signs, when they arrive.

The # 4 Orange arrow doesn't point at the obvious next tee pad. This fairway was also mowed recently and the tall grass is lying there. Naturally, I throw my weak ass drive and it buries under a clump of the mowed grass. I spent 10-15 minutes hunting for my disc in the fairway.

Some baskets don't have a number. I'm really sorry they didn't spring for better baskets here. These are cheaper thinner gauge metal and I fear they won't stand up to the wear and tear this course might get.

Navigation issues. I never found the # 10 Blue tee pad. The other guy playing did find it. I never figured out where the # 4 Blue basket was. It was, however, the prettiest tee pad here.

Other Thoughts:

While this is an OK piece of land, it doesn't compare to NAD or even the little nearby REC course, Cushman Cruise. I'm also not sure who this course is targeting? The information sheet calls it an Intermediate course but Blue 6 & 7 are way tough.

I'm giving the course a 3.0 rating (which is considered good). I oftentimes leave myself the option of coming back later and upping my rating when certain upgrades have been completed such as signs, concrete pads or needed clearing and cleaning have taken place. But truthfully, I think I've factored in the signage that is promised.

This course will never be as challenging as Sea Tac or Shelton Springs and will never be as naturally pretty as NAD, Rainshadow or White River nor does it have the wonderful elevation of Lakewood, Fort Steilacoom or Camp Sekani Jamboree way over in Spokane. It's a nice course. Good!

Great Intermediate Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 1, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is wonderful for an intermediate player. There are plenty of nice open holes to really let your arm go but most holes still require some touch to have a good shot at par. Course is well maintained, tee pads are some of the nicest tee's I have ever thrown off. Baskets have course direction hangers to help guide you from current basket to the next tee. Course is well laid out and has a nice variety of wooded, open, hyzer, anhyzer, flat, uphill and downhill throws...

Cons:

No real water hazards (in the winter there is a marsh, but it is gone by May). Baskets are fine, but the Innova Discatcher isn't my favorite. Course can also get really windy during some evening times, can be challenging.

Other Thoughts:

If you are just learning to play, this course would be great compared to nearby courses as you won't spend nearly as much time searching for your disc in the woods. But even if you are a pro there is still plenty of holes that will push different technical throws. The course is laid out in 2 9 hole configurations (Orange and Blue). The Orange course is more beginner friendly while the Blue course will push your technical ability (better bring all the throws). Great addition to Mason County Disc Golf scene, love all the work the MANY volunteers put in to making this course happen.

Creative use of a beautiful site! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 2, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is a beautiful location featuring the unique South Sound Prairie ecosystem. The grasses, wildflowers, garry oak trees, pines, big leaf maples, Johns Creek, and seasonal wetland make for a nice setting to the course. The course has two completely unique 9-hole configurations that can play as a full 18-hole course for tournaments. The course plays in the "orange" configuration on odd dates of the month. It plays in the "blue" configuration on even dates. This is to reduce congestion and ensure there are no disc/player conflicts.

There is exceptional use of the elevation on the property, giving throws both uphill and downhill. There are death putts, elevated baskets, and slanted greens.

The teepads are 5x12 concrete, with a super cool stamp. The grip/traction is supreme. Very impressive.

Having 18 unique holes using 10 baskets, course navigation can be tricky. Each basket has an "orange" and "blue" NEXT TEE arrow at the bottom of them to point you in the right direction along the gravel or mowed paths. There are also other arrows to help guide players. You can use Udisc for layouts.

The tee signs are clear and offer great information, but they are currently laminated paper. The details are there, but permanent signage will improve the course.

Mandos and Drop Zones are clearly marked. Each Drop Zone is either a teepad for the alternate layout or a custom concrete paver with exact distance to the basket.

Details on how to play each hole's OB, Mandos, and Drop Zones is available at www.pud3.org/discgolf. This is helpful because the scoring rules are clearly marked for all to see and review.

There's a putting game with custom pavers on hole 9/18 if you're looking for a little extra practice.

Cons:

The baskets aren't great. I appreciate that they used economical baskets at a public facility that is designed and maintained by volunteers... but they aren't top quality.

Orange 7 / Blue 4 can get very wet during winter months. Boots required.

The path/trail from Orange 7 to Orange 8 is pretty rough.

The course is only available during DAYLIGHT, NON-BUSINESS HOURS.

Other Thoughts:

This course offers a perfect compliment to the highly-rated, heavily wooded Shelton Springs, just a few miles up the road. It is beginner friendly in that many of the holes are quite open (prairie ecosystem). However, good shot placement is necessary to score well- particularly on the more technical Blue layout.

There's something that's so therapeutic of getting off work, going for a walk in nature and ripping a plastic disc as far as you can!
