Fun for recreational DG'ers, but I'd hate to teach P.E. at the school!

Pros:

Pullman DGC is a 9-holer that plays around the elementary school of the same name, in the town of the same name located south of Holland, MI.

The main draw of this course is probably the five (count em!) holes where a creek in the woods behind the school can come into play. The creek was quite shallow when I played (maybe 1 ft deep) so it added challenge and intrigue to the course without adding the chance of actually losing a disc.

The course opens with a flat and open throw across the front lawn of the school. At 340', this is the longest hole on the course by a wide margin. A couple of cement pathways crossing the lawn are marked as OB, making things slightly more interesting. Hole 2 plays 220' slightly downhill into the woods with the basket off to the left, and the creek behind the hole to catch overthrown tee shots. Hole 3 plays back toward the school. Hole 4 asks you to hit a tight gap just off the tee between a large pine tree and the corner of the school. The school is all brick here (no windows) and tall enough that I don't think anyone would accidentally throw a disc onto the roof. The basket is only 167' away but with the creek behind again. Holes 5 and 6 both play through the woods with the creek on your left and an OB fence on your right.

I can't decide if I like hole 7 or not. A mando forces you to throw to the right of a wall of old growth trees that stretches probably 100' off the tee. Then the line shown on the tee sign curls left about 150 degrees to the basket another 50' away. The creek is once again lurking behind the hole. At minimum I'll call it a tough birdie. The course finishes up with a couple of unremarkable shots, more in the open but still with a couple of trees to work around.

Each hole has a nice tee sign with hole number/distance/par and a color map of the hole, including clearly marked OB areas (creek, fence, and pathways). The tee signs also point towards the next tee, take note of this for navigation.

The baskets are Chainstars and all in good shape.

Cons:

No tee pads, although there are shiny silver painted kick plates that mark each tee.

As you might expect, most other course amenities are missing like a kiosk, map, practice basket, other signage, etc.

The holes are very short. Only the first hole exceeds 300', and only two of the other holes exceed 200'. There isn't enough length or challenge here to attract better DG'ers.

Hole 9's tee sign is not positioned to face the basket, this tripped me up for a minute. The basket is back towards hole 7, and instead of the silver kick plate there is a silver line painted on the cement.

The walk back around the school after hole 9 is a little long.

Other Thoughts:

The course should be assumed to be closed when school is in session.

I'm not really sure who this course is for. As Jukeshoe said I think the creek holes are not a good idea for students at the school who are new to disc golf. If they play this in P.E. class, the teacher is going to either spend a lot of time fishing in the creek for discs, or deal with a lot of kids splashing around and getting soggy/muddy. That said, personally I had a fun time here and I think other DG'ers might too if they don't show up expecting a ton of challenge. And maybe you will shoot awful enough to make it challenging like I did. :) This is an interesting pitch-and-putt in an area that is still relatively thin on DG options.

It looked like there was more space in the woods on the other side of the creek. I don't know if the school/course designer owns that land, but if it were possible to add a little footbridge and 9 more holes back there I could see this becoming a fun recreational 18-holer.

Definitely not somewhere to drive out of your way to visit, but not a bad option for locals to get a quick round in.

UPDATE September 2023: Returned to the course today and found it in poor condition. Hole 2's basket is uprooted and sitting on the riverbank. Several of the tee signs have gone missing. Hopefully the course gets some TLC in the near future. I'll assume that TLC is coming and leave my rating at 2.0 for now.

Pros:

- Pullman's a small town whose elementary school added a short nine hole course. First hole is long and open, playing the front lawn of the school. Cross over the street to the left for the second hole. Hole #'s 3 & 4 zig zag back and forth in and out of the wooded area behind the school building. The wooded area is beautiful, with a pretty stream very much in play as the left side of the fairway on #'s 5 & 6. Short, but protected by trees and stream. Hole #'s 7 & 8 zig zag in the rest of the wooded section before emerging on the other side of the school building for open #9 (basket in the edge of the woods).
-Natural tees, with a mix of road/parking lot pavement. Marked by good signage and markers in ground. Next tee markers on tee signs is a helpful touch.

Cons:

- See Pictures section for the crazy boarded up, burned out meth lab the school has on their front property! Just kidding! But really, for a town that hangs signs such as "No Meth Zone" when you drive into town, they might have a bit of a problem. Just sayin'.
- The stream holes are cool; they may not be well-suited for elementary school kids learning the sport and trying to stay dry/not lose discs. So a bit of disconnect on the design vs. target audience.
- Missing #3's sign.

Other Thoughts:

-As far as Crappy Niners TM go, this one is solid enough. The stream makes this a fun putter course with some real chance of getting wet.
-Didn't see anything indicating the course was closed during school, but I'd bet it is based on how close this one plays to the building, so be aware during school hours and avoid.
