Real Rough Hillside Shorty 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 31, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

- 9 well-mounted DISCatcher Pros with Yellow bands.
- Nice big, colorful, and accurate course map at the start.
- For such a small course with very short distances, the designers used a lot of elevation.
- Not heavily wooded but the small trees on the hillside add some challenge to the very short holes.
- Some kick boards w hole numbers were installed to designate tee areas. A couple are currently missing and/or kicked out of the ground where they were originally set.
- Flag on the blind basket of hole 7 is helpful.
- Pretty decent hole lengths for a kid/putter course. They measure between 65' and 158'.
- I love the idea of a mountainside pitch n putt. It's beautiful up there and nothing wrong with installing lower skill level courses in this kind of country.
- Ace runs all over!
- Free to play. Trailhead host at the camper in the main lot was super friendly and helpful in getting us pointed in the right direction.

Cons:

- No tee signs, no tee surfaces, and after you leave the map at the start, no navigational aids. As mentioned, a couple of the tee kick boards have been removed.
- Rough unmaintained terrain. I don't mind rugged courses but I'm listing this Con as the hillside you play is steep, the rough is overgrown, and a few baskets and landing areas will be blind. Most certainly a chance to lose discs, which I don't love for a beginner course.
- On a similar vein, those ace runs I mentioned are neat but the fun is dampened a good bit by the constant fear of a bad roll into untamed and wild rough.
- Some of the holes are really short. Cool for children but kids only throwing 65' are probably going to find just walking this rough hillside a challenge, let alone actually playing a round of golf.
- Not good parking options which means a decent walk to and then back from the course. Again, if we're talking a kid or low beginner level course, things should be as easy and fun as possible.

Other Thoughts:

This place is a weird one to me. Kid length holes(mostly) on not kid friendly terrain. Super rough, rugged, and unkept so even while you stare down your ace run you can't fully relax and enjoy. I definitely laid up on a couple holes and we only threw really bright discs. As Jah mentioned, it's tough to pin down the target audience. I'd say "me" as I love bagging all sorts of weird-a** courses and this one tickled a few of my interests. But people don't install courses solely for stupid baggers. For this course to hit full potential, they'd need more infrastructure and somebody dedicated to clearing and maintaining the rough. That's not the case at this time. As of my trip up, the GPS pin tries to take you through private land so don't do that. Follow the Rathdrum Mountain signs, you'll drive by the course map on your right. Kinda thought it was a developer subdivision sign at first glance. We parked in the main trail area lot and walked back down, then back up when finished. Not one I ever need to play again but if you're staying in the area or bagging that region I certainly wouldn't say to skip it.

Very Extreme Pitch And Putt! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 23, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

If nothing else, Rathdrum Mountain DGC is one interesting disc golf course. I don't think I've ever played a course quite like it. It's a pitch and putt set on a steep hillside. Distances are in the 65' to 150' range. Hole 1 is level. Holes 2-5 play up the steep hill. 6 & 7 are at the top and are level. Then 8 & 9 play steeply downhill.

There is a great big, brand new course sign at the start. The tee pads have a front board with a house number on it. A couple have been trashed. The Udisc app helped me find the next tee. The baskets are Discatchers with a small number on the band.

With all these sub-100' holes, the chance of losing a disc is minimal. You don't want to annie off to the right on # 6. # 9 is 102' down a very steep hill but the basket farther down the hill (# 2) would be a much more exciting throw. There is much potential here for Aces.

The course is steep but because the distances are so short, it's not all that strenuous.

Cons:

Some signage would help.

Two front boards have been torn out.

Pitch n Putt distances. No long bombs to be found here.

The ruggedness of the course will probably keep some potential players away.

The tee pads are rough but a run up isn't needed on any of them.

Other Thoughts:

I liked this little course with it's extreme elevation. The uphill throws were steep but short enough even for me to easily reach. Granted, this is probably more of a course for the 16 to 30 year crowd but this old man enjoyed himself even though he came back with no ACES.

NOTE: To Zay who who was so impressed with his 65' ACE on # 4 that he signed the brand new Discatcher commemorating this epic moment in his disc golf career. My high school football coach used to tell our backs to "Act like you been there before" when they scored a touchdown. So Zay, a 65' ACE is not that impressive. Don't graffiti up the equipment. Act like you've been there before. Sign the back of your disc. Have your buddies sign it, too. But man, it's not cool to mark up any basket!

Pitch and Putt with Verticality 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 19, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Elevation is a large factor on 7 holes, 2,3,4,&5 play uphill and 7,8,&9 play downhill.

Some larger trees in play.

Nice to have a course in this general area.

Discatcher baskets.

Downloadable map.

Flag on top of basket 7 to show location of an otherwise hidden basket.

Cons:

Short holes, 70'ish to 160'ish.

Not much shot shaping required.

Brush can hide discs, doesn't appear to be anyone performing course maintenance as of this writing.

Hidden roll away potential, especially on the three downhill holes.

Dirt tees.

Mobility challenged players may have issues with the slope.

Other Thoughts:

Not sure who this course was designed for, the fairly steep elevation changes do not make it very beginner friendly and the short length isn't much of a challenge for experienced players.

There is an option to hike up the dirt road to start on hole 6 or 7 rather than down the asphalt road to hole 1.

A spotter on semi-blind downhill hole 7 would be a plus if you are playing with others.

This course doesn't have much of a fun factor for me and I'm a big fan of elevation changes. The slope is too steep for optimal disc golfing. I think it would have been better to design the holes to play back and forth across the slope instead of up and down. With a road/path from the parking lot to both the top and bottom of the hill, the course does not need to loop back to the starting area. It could have played either up the hill or down the hill across the slope.

When playing most pitch and putt 9-hole courses I like to go around at least twice each visit. Once around this course was enough the two times I have stopped.
