3 Tees. 3 Baskets. 3 Minutes. 3 in a Row.

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 20, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

I made a quick detour to play Red Slide when I was in the area. Looking at the picture, I remember thinking, "that looks like three tees side-by-side-by-side. That can't be right." Turns out, yup, that's the layout here.
- As I approach 600 played courses, I can say Red Slide is unique. I have never played a course where all tees were lined up next to each other. Think going to the driving range and aiming for targets lined up in the field. That's what this is.
- That said, this does offer the opportunity for an incredible video or ace race challenge. Imagine acing basket #1, stepping to the second basket, acing that one, then stepping to the third tee and acing that one too. Three aces from three different tees to three different baskets in 30 seconds has to be a world record, right?
- So, yes. If you want a cubby ace, this is the course for you. From right to left, hole lengths are 110, 160, and 225 feet respectively.
- From the time I checked the clock on my truck when I turned it off, played the three holes, and fired it back up was four minutes. That includes taking time to take pictures and filling up my water cup.
- The backdrop here is outstanding. On the far banks of the Haw River, up on a hill, is a larger, older factory. Between that and the rushing waters of the river, it's a great view. Grab you an ace or two, then sit on a bench with a libation, and take in the views.

Cons:

It's a practice area, not a course. So keep that in mind.
- If you foolishly play one hole at a time - meaning one tee shot to one basket then walk back and play the second - you aren't that bright.
- Calling this a park is about as accurate as calling this a course. If it weren't for the baskets, this would seem like a vacant lot. Maybe more will be added at some point.
- If you are expecting anything resembling a challenge, you will be sorely disappointed. Other than a possibly light breeze or standing water in the field, nothing resembling a challenge.
- I think the baskets seemed shorter than normal. I don't know. I wasn't paying attention.

Other Thoughts:

- Treat this as a practice field. If you throw back from the road leading into the park (Lang Street), you have about 500 feet to air discs out to the baskets.
- This is a glorified (short) driving range. Lineup with a bag of discs and some buddies and you all go to town trying to hit chains.
- Did you know you could make this a 9 hole layout. Yes, 3 tees times 3 baskets equals 9 unique holes. Please be the person trying to convince others that this is a nine hole course. Please. Be. That. Person.
- That said, there is enough room here where you could make a short, semi-challenging, extremely scenic, beginner-friendly 9-hole layout.
- This is the perfect spot for an ace run fundraiser. A dollar a throw, or a can of food, for an ace pot, with proceeds going to some local charity / food bank.
- So, yes. The pictures are correct. This is a unique setting. And because of that, this will be practice area that I will actually remember.

Nice little practice area 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 2, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Well maintained practice area in a small, scenic park next to the Haw River. Has three tee pads right next to each other, from which you can throw at baskets in an open field at distances of 110, 160, and 225 feet. As long as you aren't expecting more, it is a perfectly adequate place to practice short throws off a tee.

Cons:

There isn't much excitement here, unless you want to go for short "ace" runs.

Other Thoughts:

The park is small but there is enough room that more could have been done to create a fun short course. There are mature trees and a scenic riverside park with old warehouses. But I will give it 2 stars because it is fine for what it is. Just don't go there expecting to play an actual course.

Nice Practice area in a beautiful setting 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 7, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Three nice Baskets.
Three nice concrete tee pads.
Not much chance of losing a disc.

Cons:

Sadly, just a practice area.
This park property is very pretty. Along side the Haw River, which was running pretty fast over rocks just beyond the park. Plus, refurbished Condos in a former mill building on the opposite shore. This could be a gorgeous 9 hole course, flat open areas, wooded areas mostly isolated from other park activities.

Other Thoughts:

I'm fine if parks want to put in DG practice areas, if there is not enough room for a course, or they don't have the funds for even a 9 hole course, this makes sense. These baskets are in a flat, wide open area of the park (check it out, you can see the tee pads and baskets on Google maps), with plenty of area in the park seemingly unused.
There are just a few activities in this park, playground, picnic area, fishing area, and, the first time I have seen these, permanent concrete Cornhole boards. These, plus the concrete tee pads lead me to believe this park might get flooded from time to time.
I stopped off to bag this course after playing the Wallace Farm temp course, 2 hours, mostly in the July sunshine and heat, trudging through a mowed farm field. So I knew I wasn't going to spend a lot of time here.
So I decided to throw my 3 Putters at the short basket (110'), 3 Mids to the ... Middle basket (160'), and 3 Fairways to the long basket (225'), then play them out, short to long. I think I was -4 playing them as 9 holes.
The baskets and tee pads are well installed, very visible in the middle of the park and fun to throw at, so hopefully they will introduce new families and players to the game. At the time of writing this review, only myself, KenanFlagler and Olorin have marked this as played. It is a quality practice area and an easy "course" to bag!

Simple, well-done practice area 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 2, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This will be the easiest review I've ever written. Red Slide Park is a simple open field practice area with three concrete tees lined up next to each other -- side by side, a couple feet apart -- and three baskets in the field at distances of 110 feet, 160 feet, and 225 feet. That's it. If you need practice off the tee from those distances, or want to practice putting from whatever distance you'd like -- and Red Slide Park is close to where you are -- stop by! Also, while you're here, feel free to take a dip in the Haw River!

Cons:

What you see is what you get. As far as practice areas go, you really couldn't come up with a better one that this. But that's all it is, a practice area.

Other Thoughts:

Check it out to add to your collection or work on your short game and putting.
