open park course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 21, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

-2 sets of natural tees on each hole, mostly in good condition
-Mach baskets are in good condition
-tee signs at the longs and shorts with hole number and distance
-a bit of elevation used in the southwest corner of the park on holes 6, 7, and a little bit on 9
-the lake is sort of in play on holes 4 and 9
-trees lining the edge of the park are used to put some danger around the greens
-the two tee sets cater decently to rec and more experienced players

Cons:

-the course is mostly wide open
-the trees don't really add much since they're mostly on the boundaries of the fairways, except holes 4, 7, and 9
-the lake is nasty and drying out near hole 4 so there isn't really a water carry or much danger at all on that hole (if there ever was)
-some of the distances listed here are definitely not correct, hole 7 is not 500' from either tee. it seems there used to be some older additional tees and basket locations that have left the hole info outdated
-not much challenge other than raw distance and not much fun

Other Thoughts:

**Update**
The course has apparently been expanded to 18 holes. Disclaimer, I have not been back to see it. I'm assuming the new back 9 is on the east side of the park and that the layout probably goes all the way around the pond. That area has more trees to come into play but also more pedestrian paths. If safety concerns aren't too bad then a shorter, more technical back 9 will be a great addition to the course.
*****

Laing Park is mostly open space but the perimeter of the park is a line of bushy evergreens. Holes 1, 2, and 5 have their baskets nestled right up against that line of trees. The interior of the park is mostly open space with a few sparse trees and Laing Lake. The two sets of tees are all out in the open except hole 9 short and maybe hole 2 long, which have some trees near the tees. Holes 6 and 7 utilize the hill in the southwest corner of the park and hole 4 throws near a corner of the lake. Hole 9 throws down over a culvert and up a small berm with the lake long of the green.

The two sets of tees have distance as their chief distinction but on hole 7 the long tee shot is long, downhill, over a patch of tall trees. That one is worth throwing even if you're playing the shorts. The tees are natural but mostly in pretty good condition. The baskets catch well.

I personally found it easier to play hole 5 after hole 2 (so 2, 5, 3, 4, 6) instead of walking back to that corner after hole 4 and then walking clear across the park to get to hole 6. It seemed like a lot less walking to me.

I played on the day of the solar eclipse after the event and there were tons of people in the park. I can't imagine there are ever even a quarter as many people at the park on a regular basis. Even so, there could be people just hanging out at the park in the fairways so use caution.

The last three holes were the best part of the course with the most fun being hole 7. Good to end on a strong note but overall the course is pretty lackluster. Open distance is the main thing though not as much as the info here says. I think the distances on 7 & 8 are to old, extinct tee positions. If I lived nearby I'd probably play more often in Scottsbluff. Rolling Prairie is totally serviceable but not that much fun.

Bombs away! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 14, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Wide open course that's honestly not good for much more than launching your disc as far as you can. Usually well manicured.

Cons:

Very few obstacles. One of the few obstacle trees on the entire course, hole 3 was just cut down. RIP poor tree, local disc golfers will miss you.

Other Thoughts:

Windy conditions can make this course unplayable.

Laing Lake is Gross 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 8, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Multiple tees per hole. Since it is open they don't really offer a different point of view as much as they offer a different length.
-There were other players out there so the course isn't being entirely neglected. There was also a sign for an upcoming tournament.
-The signage was more than adequate since it is so open. The pro tees just have distance on it and the regular tees have a map too. Navigation isn't too bad.
-There is a map at the start of the course that is worth a look just in case.
-The baskets were nice enough.

Cons:

-Very flat
-Not many trees
-Didn't use the water hardly. There is a neat little peninsula that could have been incorporated.
-Laing Lake is Gross. It is drying up and smelly and the area around it is not maintained well. There is garbage around the lake.
-This park is attached to another nicer part of the park which I would have much rather played disc golf in. The grass there literally was greener as it is probably watered or irrigated. There were also more trees there.
-Can be very windy in this area.

Other Thoughts:

This course is among my least favorite kinds of courses. It is really open so they add length to make it somewhat more challenging. I don't really find that fun at all. This land isn't good in the first place and they didn't use the available land all that well. I wouldn't go out of your way to play at this course. If you live in the area you really don't have many options as the courses in Chadron are worse and Scottsbluff is a full hour away.

Another course thats an after thought 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 23, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

2 sets of tees for each hole. Hole 4 and 9 are kind of fun to play.

Cons:

Not well marked...we had a hard time figuring out the flow of the course after hole 2. Very flat and wide open (though theres not much to work with on the design in the first place).

Other Thoughts:

Looks like this course was an after thought. The other side of the park has better grass, more trees...could at least support part of a 9 hole course. I've played worse courses, but not many. It just wasnt fun.

panhandle disc golf 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 16, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

The Laing Lake course is your standard nine hole park course with a little bit more length than standard. The course has four tee areas per hole, two with maps, two more closer to the hole without maps, which provides a lot of options. The course is mostly very open for bombs and finding the tees is no trouble because of the openness. The course runs counter clockwise around a lake and you get to walk a nice bridge after playing nine. Number four which has you throwing over the side of a Laing Lake to a tree guarded pin is the only hole under 300 feet. Mostly this course is great for long arms, from the long tees the next shortest hole is 351 and seven and eight play 685 and 500.

Cons:

Laing is one of the more murky lakes I've seen, I wouldn't go in there is you paid me. The kiosk had a lone flyer for a tournament in 05 and I get the feeling that could have been the last time the course got any proper attention. I found a website for the course once, and it too was not updated in a few years.

Other Thoughts:

Considering your options, the Alliance course isn't that bad. There is a new (so far) unlisted nine hole course in Scottsbluff which is a slightly more scenic.
