Open with Potential Lost Disc

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 8, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

-An open 9-hole course that plays around a ball field, and into an open field. The first 6 holes has heavy trees and brush on the left side. There is a lower portion of the course on a down slope, and a higher portion on an upslope, but not really much of a hill.

-Wind is dominant, holes 1-2, 7-9 just a slightly higher elevation, can be exposed to any strong wind.

-The toe boards painted white with blue stencil Hole #, Par, and Distance were the best I've seen, with grass trimmed away making them easy to see. The Discatchers are new. Navigation is clockwise.

-From the bag on the tee with a strong wind blowing was mid's, fairway drivers, and driver. Putters would of been included on lesser wind.

-Beginners and Recreational will likely enjoy a round. Intermediate and Advanced will have ace runs and birdie festivals but will be challenged by strong wind if present.

Cons:

-Its open, and 7 out of the 9 holes would have been boring if the wind hadn't of been howling when I played the course.

-Holes 3 and 4 circle the outfield fence of the ball field, and possible for a wayward disc to make the field. Even with no game, it's a long walk to a gate to enter the field, unless you're willing to hop the fence. On hole 9 there's a utility shed with razor wire on top right center fairway, the basket is on the other side of shed and fence. In the fairway a pile of rubble, and tires unappealing, and I wondered about the possibility of snakes or spiders for any discs that found itself in the tires.

-With the heavy trees and brush along the left side of holes 1-6, disc loss can be high for any wayward discs, its thick.

Other Thoughts:

From the 40-minute drive when I left my first course bag of the morning at Winter Quarters, the wind had doubled in speed at Sawmill 20-30 mph. I felt right at home considering my home course Munden Point has constant wind during the winter and spring months. If not for the wind, Sawmill would have been more of a ho hum visit, it's too open for my type of course that I would enjoy. But it's good for beginners, recreational, and anybody looking for a birdie festival. With the wind pounding on the slope, I mostly over disc, and my introduction to #1 was throwing a 5-speed and watching it rise up, flip over, and slammed parked upside down, luck! I only have a personnel con for the course, it's too open for me and only one hole I thought looked anything like holes on other disc courses. I have no Signature Hole on this review.

My overall rating is anchored on new baskets, the best-looking tee boards I've play, hole #4 resembling other park courses I've played, and include the wind possibility at a 3.0. The time to play was 30 minutes taking photos.

Featured Holes:

-#2 Par 3 at 190 feet ninety-degree dogleg left. All along the left is heavy brush and trees, at the dogleg 90 feet out is a guardian tree making it difficult to cheat the dogleg. The basket sits in the open, plenty of landing space past the dogleg. On a calm wind day, I would of try to cheat the dogleg, but with that strong headwind pushing into a potential lost disc on the left, I threw safely past the dogleg and watched my disc get slammed to the ground.

-#4 Par 3 at 305 feet was the only hole I felt that could be included at all the other park/ballfield courses I've played. Straight away tee to basket, the fairway follows a walking path, heavy trees/brush on a slope above fairways which blocked the wind, same with the outfield fence sloped above fairway, so the fairway is funneled in. About halfway down the closes point between trees and fence is 60-feet wide, a very workable fairway, the outfield fences peels away at that point, and the fairway opens up on the right-hand side. Theirs the option of bringing your disc over the outfield and back towards the open basket or aim for a group of trees about 230 feet out, and back into the fairway, which I played. Theirs the risk of loss disc, but a fair hole to play, the most scenic hole on the course, and the most fun. This could be a signature hole, but I've seen it a few times before at other Park/ballfield courses.

Trouble Hole:

-#3 Par 3 at 306 feet is straight ahead from tee to basket with the outfield fence on the right, with the fence about 4-feet high, and the trees and heavy brush all the way down on the left, with extending branches all the way down. The fairway is about 40-feet wide. There's a stadium light pole halfway down on the right where the outfield fence curves in and away from fairway opening up. On the tee headwind pushing off into the trees, another disc lost potential, I kissed off the fence just pass the stadium light pole. I wouldn't want to play the hole if a ball game was being played, and felt this hole had the highest lost disc potential on the left.
