Good add-on to a day out 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 4, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Free to play
-Signs on each tee, course map at entrance
-Some really good holes. The par 4s are definitely the highlights, as is the island par 3 (hole 8)

Cons:

-Grass tee areas
-It felt very hard to bogey a few of these holes, though not much to be done as it's a very open course.
-Layout is challenging to navigate on the first loop around. Some blind baskets, tees don't stand out hugely and some of the tee signs feel like they're well out of scale/missing key navigational markers. Wasn't immediately clear on the first play that the OB hedge by hole 6 is accessible which made us a little uncomfortable on our drive at the risk of losing a disc over the hedge (turns out that's not a risk but hey ho).

Other Thoughts:

I wouldn't say this would be the main attraction for your day unless you were local or visiting the DGUK shop, but with Markeaton park half an hour away it's not a bad extra stop after going there.

I feel like this is the kind of place that hopefully one day lots of small town parks in the UK will have. As a comparison for anyone who's played it, this course felt like a better supported/integrated version of Shrewsbury.

Some of my gripes also came from teething issues on the first play, unfortunately our day was cut short by a biblical opening of the heavens so I'd be interested to see how it plays second time around!

Other Thoughts:

We donated this park to the local council as our warehouse and factory, making the only British made discs, are just round the corner. Come visit us!

It's a lovely park with mature Oaks and Beech surrounding a couple of cricket ovals, with elevation and space. The park is not very well used by the local community although you will share the space with some dog walkers.

We've tried to design 9 very different feeling holes utilising the different features on offer but testing a range of shots.

Particular favourites are the two par 4's Hole 4 and 6.

Hole 4 fires across the bottom of the disused oval towards a line of trees, stretching away from you towards the basket, the nearest is 80m from the tee then 90, 100, 110 meters, giving you 5 different gap options to choose from, it's basically a hole for a John Houck article I read a long time ago that has stuck in the mind :) The easy wide gap to the left of the 80 meter tree gives you around a 100 meter uphill upshot. Take on the 110m tree and you have a simple 40 - 60 meter uphill for the three. Each tree has a wide branch bowl at the bottom making placement off the tee very important.

Hole 6 Plays 95 meters down a long hill with an OB hedge on the left, at 95 meters it comes to the first mature oak with another few over the next 15 meters creating different gaps before dog legging to the left at about 120m, It then goes off at a right angle to the left for about 50 meters.

Both par 4's require placement and power off the tee.

This is a really fun course despite only being 9 holes and is definitely worth a detour for a visit. It's a great addition to Markeaton Park around 20 minutes away.
