More fun that I thought it would be!

Pros:

-Great equipment. Clear signage, good baskets, a great dressing. The rock and woodchip circles around the pins to mark the bullseye are a really nice touch
-The whole course fits really nicely in the pines and aesthetically looks great
-Lots of facilties nearby
-Clearly well supported. I played with a backup of several families playing, something I can safely say I haven't had on more "prestigious" courses in the UK. Great to see the sport being played
-The design builds up really nicely for beginners. You're challenged with tight lines early on but with some very short (20m holes) which gradually lengthen before ending with some very open but longer (70m) holes

Cons:

-It's only 9 holes, and they are for beginners. I wouldn't come here just for disc golf, but with high ropes, walks and more it's actually a great day out. King George V park is also only 15 minutes drive away
-I can see issues with picnickers appearing in fairways on warmer days

Other Thoughts:

Clearly this site has generated engagement with disc golf that alot of other sites haven't in the UK, and with so many more Forestry England sites about this feels like an important site. The low score is largely for the quality of golf you'll get, but as a well targeted installation I think it nailed the brief.

Disc Golf in Robin Hoods Wood! (Designer reviewing) 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 6, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

First course on Forestry Commission land (something I've been chasing for 10 years...)

Fun technical holes

Starts by busy visitor center, toilets, cafe and other facilities on site.

Free to Play

Well Signposted and the best baskets in the business (I'm in no way biased.... honest)

7 holes designed with longer tee positions in mind for small competitions and local club play, not possible for general layout.

Well maintained.

Disc hire on site.

Cons:

Short

The rough to the edges of 7, 8, 9 will be very thick in summer.

Other Thoughts:

This is predominately a beginners course looking to introduce Disc Golf to the huge amount of families that visit the site each year.

However the holes have been laid out with a mind for the more experienced player as well. Holes 4 and 5 are my favourite asking for controlled lines through the woods.

It's not a championship standard course but you'll have fun playing the course here whatever your level of ability.

If successful and well used then the Championship courses (yes courses) deeper in the woods further from the busy areas will become a reality.

The first six holes play through well spaced woodland and then the last three play out into a more open field. I'd have loved to have put tees and baskets back into the wooded areas but no beuno at this stage until popularity proved to justify the flail and chainsaw and huge amount of paperwork this will entail!

If you're in the area get out there and give it a go!
